@@robertwright4220 I get what you’re saying, but not everything that happens to us is an opportunity to cry about how oppressed we are. Maybe he was taught to keep calm and obey authority because it gives him a better chance of surviving a police encounter? I worked as a teller for more than 10 years, people gave us notes all the time and it was no big deal, it's just their way of being prepared for what they came in for and also not having to announce to everyone in the bank what they are doing and becoming a target for theft themselves. No one should be made to feel like a criminal just for conducting a bank transaction. Also, there is no relevance to them repeatedly mentioning who he is, that changes nothing in the situation.

@paradoxical_taco
@paradoxical_taco 2 жыл бұрын
Well, there is one thing relevant to who he is. If the person wasn’t a successful Hollywood film director, would he have been treated the same. You heard Ryan Coogler - and this is no dis to him, it’s what I would have said in this situation if I were him - if you just run my name, you’ll understand why you had no reason to do all this. That reason he was referring to: he’s a record-setting movie director with no need to rob a bank. But what if he was just a regular middle class to upper middle class guy who was smart enough to build a sizable savings and had to withdraw a large some for some reason? Would the cops have said basically “no problem” after they realized who he was, and Ryan Coogler said he’d be happy to continue the convo with them, but there was no reason to keep everyone handcuffed, and asked that he and those with him be unruffled before the discussion continued? (The entire body cam footage is available here on KZbin, that’s where you’ll see everything that happened including this. That’s also where you’ll see a ton of people saying “who hands a teller a note and then walks away with a lot of money?” -these folks think another customer of the bank, not a teller called - I reminded them that even though it’s old school with ATMs & internet-only banks, but that “note” has a name, it’s called a withdrawal slip.)

As someone who worked in retail banking for 13 years as a teller and a supervisor, I believe this was handled very poorly. The entire staff, especially the teller needs additional training. I’ve had customers give me similar notes on the teller line many times. I’ve taken customers in side offices and hallways to count funds. No big deal. She knew he was a customer and as for him having an out of state license, that should not have mattered. I worked for a very large national bank and saw customers from everywhere!!! That info should have been was on file for her to verify and match. Plus, he handed them his bank card!!! She failed to do her job. Verifying d.o.b., signature on file matched to license/back of bank card, etc is standard procedure when doing a withdrawal. That amount of money isn’t even that much, if she’s that freaked out over an account holder drawing 12k out of their account maybe she’s in the wrong profession.

This whole situation is absurd and hurtful. That being said; if you were going to rob a bank, why would you ask for just $12,000? That’s not a lot of money. Edit: Some of y’all are misunderstanding my comment. $12k is a lot of money. It’s not a lot of money for a bank robbery! If you decided to rob a bank, 99.9% of people are going to plan for millions, not $12k. That’s like robbing a tv store, but just demanding the remotes.

The bank teller was set to call the police while at the same time leaving the Hollywood director in the lobby with the impression that she retrieving his money. When it was taking a bit too long he was asking around to the rest of the staff “what’s the problem, why it’s taking so long?” And the rest of the staff remain quiet unwilling to get involved knowing the seriousness of this threat of a potential bank robber and that’s when the police enter the room to sort this misunderstanding out.

There are protocols for this kind of stuff and she ignored every single one of them. 1. He provided the ID and a bank card. 2. She was concerned about a Cali ID. I bet the address on the account also matched the ID. 3. She didn't read the note which clearly says he's pulling money out of his OWN account. ...This should have been enough.

The teller at Bank of America clearly knew he wasn’t a bank robber. A bank robber doesn’t provide ID or let you leave their sight because you can do exactly what she did, which was call the police. BOA suspected him of bank fraud. They thought he was trying to withdraw money from an account by using a fake ID. Even as the teller recounted what happened, she said, "he did give me his ID, but it was a California ID, and my stomach started turning, it just seemed odd." It was probably at that moment that the police knew it wasn't a bank robbery. People bank out of state all of the time, so what's odd about that? Even though she's black, she profiled him. BOA is spinning the story as if the incident was mistaken as a robbery by bringing up the note and saying a car was running outside. Don't most bank robbers use a gun? Notice how the teller doesn't maintain eye contact as she is recounting what happened. I bet that's because she's realizing she was using her own biases against him. Instead of calling the police, they could have called the BOA that opened his account and verified he was a BOA customer. If he wouldn't speak to her, as she claims, why didn’t the manager speak to him and ask more questions?

If he had been a customer with BOA for a while his bank card might even have his picture. I know in the past BOA used to put your picture on the card if you wanted them to. They could’ve called the branch where he opened the account to get a copy of his signature. They could’ve asked questions about the account only the owner would know. Like what was the last deposit or withdrawal you made or when and where was the last time you used the card? If he is a bank robber he can’t and won’t waste time answering those questions, but the owner would.

This is very sad and disturbing to me and it makes my stomach hurt just this year how incompetent the teller was. If the man gave you an ID and he told you to take $12,000 out that’s a large amount which means you have to go somewhere private account is money her job is to take that ID And look up his information and if it checks out he goes in another room and he go count his money and leave. He didn’t say give me the money he didn’t say anything that’s related to a bomb a knife gun shots fired in order to rob the bank nothing crazy what’s going on in my opinion is that the teller should be fired, fired fired fired simple as that because we’re poor decision she’s making the company look bad and don’t know how to do her darn job. You just humiliate somebody that was a celebrity and they should calls for a termination.

First, I object to how the media is covering this story. The narrative has been mostly, "oh this wasn't a bank robber, it was successful film director Ryan Coogler who is worth $25 million." But it shouldn't have had to be Ryan Coogler, for a black man to not be treated like this. If he was worth $25, this treatment was irreprehensible. Also, I worked at a bank for many years. The bank establishes specialized services for their preferred clients, usually based on net worth. As a part of those services, preferred clients would never have to stand at the teller line and ask for anything, let alone large amounts of cash. Normally a preferred client would be invited into a private space, like the manager's office, and have all of his/her needs catered to while at the bank. So another big question is, why doesn't BofA see Ryan Coogler as a preferred client? There is so much wrong with this, but it's the same ol' story. The only way this will ever change is if black people consolidate and leverage their power. Until then, these stories are just par for the course.

Honestly this situation breaks my heart. We as black folks MUST take better care of each other. Now, he probably should have asked to meet with a teller in the office. One thing I think the bank needs to change is the withdrawal amount. They said they get a little suspicious for withdrawals over $10K. All she had to do was check his balance and she would have seen a bazillion dollars in his account. Lastly, the police saying they respond first and ask questions later is WRONG! I am wondering what she told the 911 operator. He didn't have a weapon and did not make any threats. I am saddened that he had to endure such fear.
