No one should be made to feel like a criminal just for conducting a bank transaction. Also, there is no relevance to them repeatedly mentioning who he is, that changes nothing in the situation.

Well, there is one thing relevant to who he is. If the person wasn’t a successful Hollywood film director, would he have been treated the same. You heard Ryan Coogler - and this is no dis to him, it’s what I would have said in this situation if I were him - if you just run my name, you’ll understand why you had no reason to do all this. That reason he was referring to: he’s a record-setting movie director with no need to rob a bank. But what if he was just a regular middle class to upper middle class guy who was smart enough to build a sizable savings and had to withdraw a large some for some reason? Would the cops have said basically “no problem” after they realized who he was, and Ryan Coogler said he’d be happy to continue the convo with them, but there was no reason to keep everyone handcuffed, and asked that he and those with him be unruffled before the discussion continued? (The entire body cam footage is available here on KZbin, that’s where you’ll see everything that happened including this. That’s also where you’ll see a ton of people saying “who hands a teller a note and then walks away with a lot of money?” -these folks think another customer of the bank, not a teller called - I reminded them that even though it’s old school with ATMs & internet-only banks, but that “note” has a name, it’s called a withdrawal slip.)

As someone who worked in retail banking for 13 years as a teller and a supervisor, I believe this was handled very poorly. The entire staff, especially the teller needs additional training. That info should have been was on file for her to verify and match. Plus, he handed them his bank card!!! She failed to do her job. Verifying d.o.b., signature on file matched to license/back of bank card, etc is standard procedure when doing a withdrawal. I used to work as a teller...I also worked in the fraud department of Wells Fargo. Her story doesn't make sense. There are protocols for this kind of stuff and she ignored every single one of them. 1. He provided the ID and a bank card. 2. She was concerned about a Cali ID. I bet the address on the account also matched the ID. 3. She didn't read the note which clearly says he's pulling money out of his OWN account. ...This should have been enough.

The teller at Bank of America clearly knew he wasn’t a bank robber. A bank robber doesn’t provide ID or let you leave their sight because you can do exactly what she did, which was call the police. BOA suspected him of bank fraud. They thought he was trying to withdraw money from an account by using a fake ID. Even as the teller recounted what happened, she said, "he did give me his ID, but it was a California ID, and my stomach started turning, it just seemed odd." It was probably at that moment that the police knew it wasn't a bank robbery. People bank out of state all of the time, so what's odd about that? Even though she's black, she profiled him. BOA is spinning the story as if the incident was mistaken as a robbery by bringing up the note and saying a car was running outside. Don't most bank robbers use a gun? Notice how the teller doesn't maintain eye contact as she is recounting what happened. I bet that's because she's realizing she was using her own biases against him. Instead of calling the police, they could have called the BOA that opened his account and verified he was a BOA customer. If he wouldn't speak to her, as she claims, why didn’t the manager speak to him and ask more questions?

If he had been a customer with BOA for a while his bank card might even have his picture. I know in the past BOA used to put your picture on the card if you wanted them to. They could’ve called the branch where he opened the account to get a copy of his signature. They could’ve asked questions about the account only the owner would know. Like what was the last deposit or withdrawal you made or when and where was the last time you used the card? If he is a bank robber he can’t and won’t waste time answering those questions, but the owner would.

First, I object to how the media is covering this story. The narrative has been mostly, "oh this wasn't a bank robber, it was successful film director Ryan Coogler who is worth $25 million." But it shouldn't have had to be Ryan Coogler, for a black man to not be treated like this. If he was worth $25, this treatment was irreprehensible. Also, I worked at a bank for many years. The bank establishes specialized services for their preferred clients, usually based on net worth. As a part of those services, preferred clients would never have to stand at the teller line and ask for anything, let alone large amounts of cash. Normally a preferred client would be invited into a private space, like the manager's office, and have all of his/her needs catered to while at the bank. So another big question is, why doesn't BofA see Ryan Coogler as a preferred client? There is so much wrong with this, but it's the same ol' story. The only way this will ever change is if black people consolidate and leverage their power. Until then, these stories are just par for the course.

Ryan is smart. Because if he wasn’t okay with it, imagine the backlash!

I don’t care what he says, with ID, bank card and pin, WHAT? WHAT ELSE? I don’t care for her right now. She was preoccupied by her terrible life decisions.

She did racially profiled this man because of what he was wearing. Yet if it was her family member being profiled in that way she would have been outside protesting. Shame on you and you should be fired.

1. You're not supposed to call the police while the robber is in the bank....duhhhh and 2. That officer pulled their gun out! Ryan could have lost his life from that stupid bank tellers error. The world we live in🤯

How many bank robbers give they’re bank cards and ID during a robbery? We all know what this was really about. Whoever called 911 needs to be fired and prosecuted immediately.

A big horrible mistake. I will never ever bank with BOA. Have heard so many horror stories. No way. They need to be boycotted.
