What Should You Keep In Your Mountain Bike Survival Kit? | Spares To Save Your Ride

It's always good practise to keep spares and repairs for your bike in an MTB Survival Kit. By keeping a selection of items to use on your bike at home, you could save your ride either before you head out, or after you come back through the door. You never know when you'll not be able to get down to your local bike shop (such as during a Pandemic!) if something goes wrong, so Doddy always recommends keeping a selection of equipment at home!

The mech hanger stuff drives me kind of crazy. Can't wrap my head around the fact it's basically one per frame. Some brands of bikes have a specific hanger per bike. Sounds a bit like what is known as planned obsolescence to me. I'm really glad we start seeing standard hangers and some of the brands are picking them up. Hope to see more and more of them doing so.

I had a kmc chain and it was garbage. After taking the quick link off once it was loose! And the chain stretched within a couple weeks. Maybe I just got a dud

They do wear off. You can see that at the interface - the tabs wear a bit and open and close more easily. Unofficially you can reuse them a few times, until it feels they open too easy (see Cyclingtips extensive reportr on chain cleaning, service and waxing). Officially they have reusable and non-reusable links and don't recommend using the latter more than once. And every chain maker I've read (Shimano, KMC, YBN, SRAM) strongly advises using old master links in a new chain. Personally I reuse my own links if they feel secure after reassembly. But would not do it on another person's bike (briefly worked as a mechanic at a shop and still do amateur repairs on other people's bikes) unless it was an emergency to get home. Breaking a chain is fairly unusual, I've only broken two during rides in about 300-400K km ridden, and in both cases as results of shifting issues where the chain was split open caught between two gears, but the results could be catastrophic so I take this one seriously. Same with pedal and crankset stuff.

As someone who has destroyed 2 derailleurs (on a road bike FFS), having a spare hanger is the difference between being back on the bike in 2 to 3 days, or a month waiting for this to arrive via Amazon. Spare cables and cable housing also very useful in these instances. FWIW, most online retailers will sell bulk/semi bulk supplies. Pushys in Australia sell cables in 10 packs, etc.

I have a Dremel tool w/a sanding wheel to resurface pads. A small honing stone takes burrs off of discs and dings on various parts. I broke a hanger once. I Zap Strapped the mech to the rear stay. I got out and even had a few gears... Good info

Avoid buying compartment boxes, simply ordering a big Chinese meal and watch GMBN videos all weekend. Order sauces for small tubs. Duck pancake with Hoi Sin is perfect as you get the full set in one hit. Feel guilty the next day and ride your ass off....

I don't use the crimp on cable ends. I put some flux on the end and hit it with a solder iron. Keeps the ends from fraying, and if needed, I can pull the cable through the housing, and reinsert it without a problem.

I say I'm at least 15 pounds over my ideal weight so I'll deal with the extra weight of a valve cap to keep mud away from my valve stems. I did not see where those valve caps came from in the links. Its not the first time i have just taken a spare bike with me in the van and had to use it. Other that that instead of pissing about with bleed kits and pads, i always have a set of spare brakes with me too, much quicker ! Wheels and tyres are something that i have taken as spares and have had to use too. If not for me then for the other guys.

For tire repair, I keep a few pre-cut chunks of Flex Seal tape. No messing with sandpaper or glue, just wipe off the spot on the tube and stick it on. I started using it after having problems with a wheelbarrow tube. Tried several different patches and glues and nothing seemed to stick for long, always end up with a blow out. Cut a chunk of this and no problems since. Stuff is stickier then heck.

Does anyone take a snake-bite kit with them? In Colorado we have rattlesnakes. There was one biker that I heard of that died from a bite. My dad has ridden past one and I had slowed down so it was gone before I got to it. They say its the 2nd person that gets bit after the first person wakes it up.

Hi Luke, if you do not mind upgrading your groupset "you can buy directly from shimano or your local bike shop can order it for you." If you do not want to upgrade go with what is in the quotes.

No. Hydraulic housing is basically a plastic hose. Gear housing is made of wound cables. Brake cable housing (for those running cable brakes) is wound like a spring. They are not interchangeable. Brake cable is 1.6mm, gear cables 1.2mm. hydraulic hose, various diameters.

Let it be clear, motorcross or enduro bikes DON¨T leak oil, not even when they fall over. They don´t leak petrol anymore also, as sinds 2008 all 4T bikes have inyection systems, and 2T sinds 2018. Please don´t make motor sports look like heavy contaminators, as this is untrue. I love both sports, enduro/mx or biking, and I also love hiking in the mountains. I know these worlds from the inside, and I can say we are all as clean and educated as, when we enter the country side. I love the GMBN tech programs, but this statement struck a nerve. MX/enduro motorbikes are well serviced machines in general. MX bikes only ride on MX tracks, and enduro motors pass an MOT test specialy to control leaks as on any vehicle that drives on public roads. I see more leaking shocks on mtb-s than on motorbikes. That said, keep up the good work !!
