Yes, simple. For our expedition/bikepacking we are immensely satisfied with our 2018 Surly ECRs. 27.5x3, 2x10, cable disc brakes. We did the GDMBR with no failures or repairs other than New Mexico goathead tire punctures. For all other riding we use our 2015 hardtail MTBs. 27.5x2.1, 3x9, hyd disc brakes. The versatile uses for this pair of bikes are the Santos Trails near our home in Florida, Bentonville Arkansas MTB trails, and I put on commuter tires to ride 500 miles across Iowa with RAGBRAI. Any newer bikes I’ve seen don’t provide the same versatility as this pair of 2015 era hardtails. Yes, many new bikes do something or another way better than these bikes but the feature(s) or spec(s) that makes them better for one thing renders them less suitable for one or more other things we do. We have discussed how many boyfriends or girlfriends each of would need to cover all of our interests or occasional kinks. That too involves too many additional costs, storage issues, etc. So again we opt for familiarity, versatility and reliability.

Great topic, always been a KIS evangelist. Lowtech is the futiure. deffo need gears, 1 x is brilliant, hardtails for the win. I won't mention the tyres. Forks depend on your age, I keep trying rigid but the neck says no. External cables. Gravel goes flat bar.... lol. The hardtail mountain bike is perfect for so many disciplines.

#quiz - the first 'official' 29er tyre was the WTB Nanoraptor - which was essentially a cut down Velociraptor (they thought just making a bigger version of that would be too heavy) - but I think Panaracer did a 700c version of the Smoke before that?

I'm riding a 2020 Scott Scale 940 much like the one in the vid, it's got the full rigid carbon fork. 29x2.3 fast rolling tires, I do have a dropper post, 12 speed SRAM GX mechanical in the back, and a 1x 38t oval chainring in the front. Here in Michigan, it can hit all the local flowy, sometimes rooted singletrack with aplomb. It's not a DH machine at all, it's a singletrack/fire road/flat-bar gravel monster. I can beat anyone and anything without a motor going up the hills, and many of them going down. I love it!

My one MTB is an steel hardtail. Hydraulic disc brakes are non negotiable these days. Gears and a dropper are really nice, but most of my local spots I can deal with a QR clamp, and could push through single speed if needed (you're ALWAYS in the wrong gear.) I have legitimately thought about going full rigid because I seriously don't do maintenance regularly enough. My frame is designed for a 150 sus fork though, and there's isn't really anything on there market that's suspension corrected for that size in metal. Even in carbon, the Whisky 9 LT is still a bit short.

One of my bikes is a steel, rigid, 26", singlespeed, no dropper, but it does have hydraulic disks (10yr old SLX). I love it. It's a different experience than my 29er hardtail with gears or my full sus. It's fun BECAUSE of its limitations, making local trails/paths that are boring on the other bikes fun/challenging again. I also just like nimble singlespeeds in general, they're very rewarding from a technique/fitness perspective.

The term “boonies” is a colloquialism used to refer to remote, rural, or underdeveloped areas, often implying that they are far from urban conveniences. It’s derived from the word “boondocks,” which has a more specific historical origin. “Boondocks” comes from the Tagalog word “bundok,” meaning “mountain.” American soldiers during the Philippine-American War (1899-1902) adopted the term to describe the rural and mountainous areas of the Philippines. Over time, it became a general term in American English to describe remote or rural areas.

I like tech and wish gear boxes would hurry up and become mainstream. Can't wait to see you guys riding and reviewing those in the future. The new Spin Drift seems cool but the park version is really close on specs to the Rage. Are they going to overhaul their DH bike or replace it with this? Also for the price point of the Fox Factory version Spin Drift park you are getting close to the V10 and Commencal Supreme neighborhood.

I love the simplicity of my carbon hardtail with rigid carbon forks - comes in at less than 8.5kg and is amazing for single track, gravel, touring and even tarmac, and is SO much fun. With Continental SpeedKing 29er x 2.2 inch tyres it is uber fast, with exceptionally low rolling resistance. I use RideNow TPU inner tubes on the carbon wheels as they are cheap, VERY light and work. Don't need a dropper, and don't miss front suspension. For me - simpler is so much better.

I think it really depends on how big your garage is. If I only had room for one bike, it would have to be a hardtail with a dropper post and ~120mm of travel up front. As it stands I have room for 2 bikes, I have my fully rigid flat bar gravel bike that I use for commuting, fitness, light MTB duties (85% of my riding), and then I have a trail bike with 150/140 travel that I pretty much exclusively use for visiting MTB parks. A decent hardtail with a 1x drivetrain, dropper post and lock out could handle MOST of what my 2 bikes do.

Not entirely out of choice, but I'm riding a simple bike. 90's steel frame, rigid Pace fork, Magura rim brakes and Eagle 1x12 drivetrain (simpler and better than 3x7) I think tubeless is simpler, so if anybody makes true tubeless 26" rim brake wheels I'd love to know, but rather not faff around with sealant so I can change tyres to suit different conditions) The only complication I want to add is a dropper post, but 26.8 is hard to find. (1 bike to rule them all because the other got stolen!) It doesn't limit what I can ride, but I'm old so it limits how often I can do it. I was at Glenstress on Monday and my knees are still sore from doing all the work in the downhill sections. I swear it used to be smoother.

A hardtail, 1x11, 130mm fork, dropperpost 29er, a full suss and a hardtail emtb (code RSC, dropperpost and 160mm Yari fork). My favourite of the four is my hardtail 29er, if I could only keep one, that would be it, no question. Just a sweet spot between simplicity and technology. Hardly ever ride the full suss (bike park only) and while them emtb is great for when I'm feeling lazy I would sell it long before I would part with my hardtail acoustic.

A big deal is that the more which has been added the less multipurpose bikes have become... In the early 90's I had 1 single bike it was rigid (later had a sus fork) but it literally did everything... Commuter / Road / MTB and MTB race bike. Just seems in the last few years bikes and components have become super niche and expensive - I'd probably be less inclinded to hop on my XC MTB to run down to the shop than my commuter bike, then I'd not use my commuter as a road bike... So now I need different bikes for each single purpose. So yeah bring back simplicity - my fully rigid SS bike pretty much does almost all I'd need from a bike... Kinda highlights why gravel bikes became so popular so quickly - its very much in the spirit of early 90's bikes - simple and multiuse.

For me, it is always about riding more, that is the end all. I do live in the "Boonies" and I think about being able to get home if something fails. Now to go back to living in the "Boonies", that also means that I likely won't have cellphone access. So, I want a bike that I can repair, so I will always have external cable routing, always run tubes, and yes I ride a lot, and I want a lighter bike. So i ride a fatbike quite a bit of the time, and without suspension., and tubes If I ride my mtn bike, it's a hardtail, no dropper, external cable routing and tubes. Road bikes are nice older bikes with tubes, external cables... all something that I can fix while riding. Although I own a small shop and do lots of repairs, generally most bikes in today's world take longer to repair. ... work on droppers, more time to replace cables, more time to work on everything. I think lots of great, advancements are out there, .. but at the end of the day, I simply want to ride more and be able to fix the bike while riding if need be. Thanks for sharing, always love your videos!

I use to race a ridged single speed MTB and cross bikes with no problems whatsoever. I am over 50 and still bike with a ridged gravel bike.

I would like to see what your views are regarding Decathlon bikes. I'm living in Canada and people here haven't heard much things about them and think that the bikes are cheaply made and will break as soon as you hit a single track. What does GMBN think about the Rockrider brand?

I’m mid 40’s and never owned a full suss. Last bike I bought was a tricross single speed. It’s a drop bar cx bike 42x18 with v’s. That’s my minimum for xc

Simplicity rules, sometimes. I'm still using my Kona Kilauea with the Project 2 fork (new to me in 1993). King Alfred's Way was our big ride this year, and I'm getting climbing pbs in my local woods. It's crap at stopping, and thumbshifters are an ergonomic disaster, so a modern, simple, flat bar bike? Yes!

Hm… I do also have a gravel bike so, for my MTBs, I associate the feel of that kind of riding with at least suspension forks. All else is optional, at least for me. My fat bike has a rigid frame but no more suspension than those huge tires is really needed.

After riding a flat bar roadbike in mtb trails don't need anything more than that... if it not where that 23-25 tires side walls crack of fatigue in 1 week

If I had no gears my ride would go wrong every time I encountered a hill😂 Meanwhile I've never had my derailleur let me down during a ride.

I feel there is a market for a 3, 5 and 7 gear bikes that would be very fun with a short travel fork.
