760 is fair enough for me - im only 173cm tall. That's my middle between wide enough and good/quick manoeuvrability - I like everything with a bit more back sweep and rather go more rise than more spacers. 35-40 is cool for my frame. Atm I´m running fatbars non carbon and like them although many people think they´re too stiff.

I am glad Doddy is standing up for the high priced bikes. No one on GMBN ever said you are not good enough if you dont own a $10,000+ bike. In fact the Yeti that Doddy built has some components on it that were not the most high end price wise. But he felt that is what would work best. If people can afford and want an expensive bike, it is good the bike market has an option for that. but on the flip side there are a ton of $2000 crazy good hard tails out there. and GMBN sows a great variety of bikes in all sorts of price ranges. Take Blake for example, he rides his Scout all the time!

Regarding bar width, saw a method of calculating maximum bar width by multiplying your height, in centimetres, with 4.40. Take it as a ball park figure or estimate. Mine is 748mm and I run a 740mm bar which feels comfortable enough. If I were to buy a gravel bike, would have to get a rigid fork. Would just buy a light XC bike if was going to use a suspension fork, albeit the gravel bike is only 30mm.

How I was taught many years ago by MBR, was to do a press up on a tape measure, placing your hands at the most comfortable place, that will be your bar width.

@gatoryak73322 жыл бұрын
Some riders don't know how to do a proper press-up. IMO, the correct hand spacing for a proper press-up is too narrow for mountain biking. The forces on the shoulders is greater during press-ups than the forces from MTB. However, if the handlebar is too wide, it places the shoulder in a weak position, so for both press-ups and MTB, a overly-wide grip is asking for shoulder damage.
@kg4lod2 жыл бұрын
This doesn't quite work because it optimizes for press, but MTB requires both press and pull -- and pull is used more. This has been studied in sports medicine literature and the median optimal push/pull posture (from which you can derive bar width) is the one that creates a 20 degree angle between the side of the torso and the inside front projection line of your arm.

I used to do fine with standard bars of ten years ago. Then I bought a new set of 780mm.. if I remember right, that was 120mm more. However, I have gone back just a little bit. I am 6'-1" with longer arms and my wife is 5'-4" with shorter arms. We both currently have Specialized Levo SLs (e-bikes) which originally came with 780mm bars. The bars on both bikes are now cut down to 740mm for our cross-country riding in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Strange that 740mm bars works for both of us; but, I can muscle the bars when needed while wife has enough leverage to be comfortable when passing through gaps between trees. Now see that the latest Specialized Levo SLs come with 720mm (for small) and 750mm (for med-XL) bars, respectively; so, I assume Specialized has now caught on. Otherwise, I have used same handlebar width on my last four MTBs; but, I do remember running sub-700mm width bars (ala John Tomac) when I was racing cross-country way back when.

Do a bunny hop, maybe do one or two of those "warm up your tires while going down a straight ride" kind of turns, Move them around again if needed. Then just mark out where they feel good. I found that even having higher rise bars made me want to cut them shorter or lower rise bars making them longer. I even had a set of the same shape bars with different like tube size? And had to cut them different too. This was all for BMX tho. I'm brand new to MTB'ing so I'm not sure if it overlaps at all.

Yeah, and the Loamlab bar ends look like they have the same problem…catching a small tree and causing accident.

On my 2014 full sus originally had 700mm bars. I increased the them to 760mm and went from a 70mm stem to a 60mm stem. On my 29er hardtail it came the 780mm bars. I have replaced them with OneUp carbon bars. Which I cut down to 780mm. I feel the slightly longer bars on the hardtail helps with steering. As my full sus has 27.5" wheels

washboards on gravel roads in Colorado are brutal! only reason I'd go suspension fork over rigid. it's terrifying having to have a loose grip on the bars to keep your teeth from chattering out of your mouth but then also needing to clamp down on the brakes to avoid flying off the side of a mountain... especially on mile 50 if an endurance ride

Top brands of bike in my opinion are definitely Santa Cruz and Kona, I got into Kona because of the Kona clump team freeride, slopestyle scene back in 2009 when Andreu Lacondecguy and Fabien Barrel were on the team; but also I ride Kona because of the childhood memories as my Dad had a Kona Stab in 2008, a Kona Hoss 2005 (bought in 2008) and it was cool seeing all the stuff he sent on them. I like Santa Cruz because of the VPP and they look mega cool and they ride great.

Would love a knog that goes under the stem cap, maybe doubling as the star nut?

I run 800mm bars on everything, but I run 685 on older Kona's pre 2010 just because that's what I like and I'm used to

I keep hearing those air tag style devices are easy to "sniff" out by thieves with the right app on their phones. Doddy, sorry you got sick. Take care of that beautiful brain of yours. We need it. Thanks

Running a set of the Surly Sunrise 38 mil riser bars straight out of the box so I guess 800mm but I sit up right on my big Trek Verve XL

The other aspect of bars is also stem length and stack height... we are seeing riders like rude and moir who are downsizing on bikes and in rudes case a bike check from last year quoted him with a 50mm stem whereas moir has a fat stack of spacers to bring his bars up

Answering the viewer questions on this one was spot on and summarises what unfortunately so many comment sections on these videos look like Lots of people complaining about the super expensive stuff some people can afford to run, most likely because they can’t afford it. Either packaged as being bitter about the presenters or pros that don’t have to pay full price, or arguing that ever advance in the industry is just a cash grab and it was better in the good old days on a bike that felt sketchy on a fire road If you can’t afford a modern super bike, that’s fine, but some people can - and that doesn’t make them evil 😂

Doddy roulette. Eventually you get a win, actually addressing the clickbait question first. As for the comments clearly they rubbed you up the wrong way, which is good to get some real heartfelt pushback to the deluge of quite correct bloated price criticism. Good to see you looking at building your own I am thinking the same thing but for an ebike.

That 'Shimano Premium Grease' looks a lot like 'Motorex Bike Grease 2000'. But Motorex is a lot easier to find. Seems like we got COVID around the same days, i was also with COVID last week, such a bummer when i had all this bike related stuff going around town :(

On the subject of the cost of bikes, I don't think that it's that they are expensive. Yes you can get a bike at any price point, but for me the issue is the rising cost for a new bike with a comparative build. At the end of 2016 I purchased a YT Capra Comp AL1 for about £2300. The spec was 1x11GX, Rockshox Lyrik fork, Rockshox Monarch Plus and a Reverb post. Move forward a couple of years from when I purchased and the parts got down graded and the price went up. If I were to try and purchase a bike now with a comparative build level, I'd be paying an extra £1500 - £2000 be it a direct buy or a shop bought bike. Like I said, prices have risen steeply on like for like spec over recent years. We definitely get less for our money and that's where the expenses is.

those pinky protecter bar end things are actually pretty cool but carrying a $40 price tag is a bit heavy i feel, maybe im cheap but $20 is still heavy for them, i'm still getting some though
