These trucks kept America alive - I started driving ‘em back in the 80’s. They make cool parade toys, but I’ve gotten used to the newer ones. I just don’t think I could give up the comfort & convenience for a 40 year-old back breaker.

Just by listening to this ASTRO, you might have a 335 Cummins. They made 2 variations of this engine, big cam and small cam, but is a torque monster.

Worked at a GMC Dealership back when I was a kid (late 60's 70's. Changed many a cab on the Astros. Knew them inside out. Also worked on Thermo-Kings. Number one problem was the evaporator beeing blocked with paper or plastic cutting down airflow. Easy fix

The local feed mill used to run nothing but GMC General cabovers. All Detroit 2-strokes. As the saying goes, check the fuel, fill the oil. The owner of that feed mill went to great lengths to maintain that fleet for decades after GMC stopped making Generals. They were dragging in parts rigs from all over the country.

When I was in Hanksville Utah coupla years back on holiday I was grubbing round a junkyard for old licence plates (I'm a English nut job who collects truck and heavy machinery souvenirs and badges) and there was one just like yours there just sitting in the sun, a real beauty. Tim I have a 98 peterbilt 379 and recently only one of the metals copper pieces that your dad was switching out broke and ended up in the oil pan it broke a small chunk off 1/4 width maybe a inch long . I believe it was the first or second one from the front of the motor. the motor is a n14 red top. We bought the new parts but I’m just in a tight spot with money to pay a mechanic if you could help a fellow trucker out with anything with putting the new ones in or do you think done for, my motor still spins everything was just working fine before this but I love the channel and where your taking it

If one of your bearings broke your gonna need to do some investigating, a big chunk of metal breaking might have done some big damage. I recommend you take the main bearing cap off where the one broke and carefuly inspect if it is savable, also for the love of god please do not spin the motor anymore. Theirs loose metal inside your engine. Do not spin it anymore

I gave up doing a/c cause too many cheapskates think freon of any type, (R134A charge is around $75-$150 pending amount and the newest R1234yf is $150-$200 + charge again depending on amount) should be free...🤣😂😅 Let them roast. My vehicles including my 1995 Taurus wagon a/c is ice cold🥶 ..... Works 4 me! A/C systems are similar in a lot of ways. Oil, pressures etc change pending on systems and of course ambient temperatures. Knowledge is everything. A lot of consumers just don't get it. Great content as always Tim. The last company I drove for had very talented mechanics. When the owners brand new, one driver Peterbilt had constant problems, the plan was to buy some 1970s or 80s tractors from the no rust South, strip to the bare frame rails, and sandblast those, and build a new tractor from the ground up. Don't check brake chambers or wiring, replace with new. All new everything but the block pre emissions Cummins and Cat engines. Unfortunately the company didn't survive to complete this plan.

O-H-I-O Porter greetings!🇺🇸 Working on this trailer was quite informative. I own a reefer but have never pulled it or any ever before. I’ve pulled flatbeds, old round nose 1950s trailers & box trailers. I might be able to help you on the doors or a complete old reefer unit.🧐 I don’t remember what reefer it has on it. I don’t think it’s a TK though. Interesting title! What do you really think of the current status of trucking?! It seems to be some weird times that’s for sure!😵‍💫 Reminds me of the 70s when some strikes were goin on. Those were hard times, but the money was better when you got a good run. Fuel was MUCH cheaper back then! It didn’t look like the speedometer was working on the GMC. Loved hearing it running down the road, pulling a trailer. I liked the view of the steering wheel with that notorious GMC horn button sticking out. I can remember that very well. That’s a real wheel & horn button. Don’t see too many of those today on rigs. You almost sounded like …”It’s a cut throat world in trucking right now”. Is that how you feel? I’m sure that there are many companies or drivers that would love to have the runs you have though. Keep them wheels a rollin & we will catch you on the flip flop! Blessings! 🥰😎✌️

Old iron will last longer than modern semi’s. It’s just reality and easy to work on and maintain. Less sensors…. less pay check to spend on. Not to mention old cars and pick ups. Funny thing, I see more modern vehicles broken down on the side of the road or on tow trucks and I pass by with an old truck. They get shocked on how it’s still going. All I can say, I spend less to maintain because no sensors to replace lol.
@jackjr.sparrow3668
@jackjr.sparrow3668 2 жыл бұрын
@@kurtfoulke5130 true but its easier to modify what you want than modern crap. You gotta by pass the computer to even turn your engine. Dont get me wrong, I like the modern semi trucks but too many issues. Old school is much easier to do what ever you want. Plus less picky on the smog. To expensive to run modern crap which is unbelievable. I expect more on modern to be less expensive but it's the other way around. Classics will be gas eaters but less pain to deal with. To buy an old car with no sensors or computer. You can make it economical thanks to technology and you build it the way you like it than from the factory. For semi trucks I don't know exactly. But there has to be a way to make your old iron to be economical and get power. In the new trucks it's just engine and computer that make it efficient. I trust more in building it myself than let the factory build it because you never know if they go cheap on you when you spend so much. Plus with so many computer components. It's a good recipe for hackers to take control of now a days. For me in my opinion, I feel much safer in an old semi or classic vehicles than modern ones in long drives. I respect your opinion because there still some good things in new trucks. 👍
@jackjr.sparrow3668
@jackjr.sparrow3668 2 жыл бұрын
@@kurtfoulke5130 agree but I care more on my safety from any hackers in long distance. Since hey, its 2022 ... to many kids know too much to ruin anyone's carrier. I mean FCS and Gentry Sons Trucking are doing well with there old semi' s.... they are hack proof. With a little engineering and science nothing is impossible to be successful in this world. Plus the semi world is getting boring because every single semi looks the same. No more square bodies of different shape and size. To be honest I just lost trust with computers and robot gadgets from where crime is going. Back then it was on foot to commit crime. Now criminals can sit back an do whatever they want with a click. There should be youtubers that could have happened but I'm not sure. anyone can hack to your computer in cars and semi which is unfortunate. I mean I hear you with gas mileage and comfort but I will stick to what is more reliable and safer and at least I can make adjustments or change to what the factory could have done instead of a particular part. Even car builders and semi builders like old iron due to unlimited things you can do. If you want to transform it to a gas hogger for racing than it shall be. Turn it to a gas saver you can do so. Turn it to a comfortable ride, you can do so. Lastly it's fun to drive and it keeps you awake. With new cars and trucks . It's like riding a cloud and I dont like that anymore. It's a hazard because its easier to go to sleep and have an accident. But everyone has there choice which is ok👍people have there likes and dislikes.

If you are hauling refers let me know. My mom owns and broker company and she always supports trucker. She used to own trucker when I was little. So if you help her she will help you. She does loads out of the midwest, mostly Wisconsin and goes east coast mainly. She does potatoes and chicken mostly.
