its funny how they made a big deal about vw and ram trucks putting out 2 much pollution and fined them big time but they let this company make these trucks called gliders. its a new truck with a older rebuild diesel engine in it they don't have emissions controls on them because of the loophole. in the law. how fare is that. people look them up.

Look you guys are nice enough but you are not even using these trucks how they were designed in these scenarios. Your passing off your “stress tests” to people who probably don’t know any better. Also it was hard watching you two with the tow hooks Jesus it was sad.
@beunbad3 жыл бұрын
@@bigbossman5969 because all the emissions on big trucks ruin the motors and cause a lot of downtime. And I think the older motors particles are bigger and fall to the ground where emissions trucks atomize it and put it into the air. Down time fixing emissions trucks cost truckers too much money and can ruin a business that’s why they buy Gliders.

Gentlemen, if I may add my 2 cents. I'm on my 3rd Duramax (15, 16, now I own a '17 L5P). I don't believe you fairly tested your Chevy in the downhill/braking portion. The correct method for going down a long steep grade is to have the exhaust brake engaged while using the cruise control to adjust speed. The computer will then control the variable vanes of the turbocharger to achieve the desired speed set by the cruise control. I have traversed many times the same sections of i70 through the tunnel where you perform your tests. I am always amazed how well the truck goes downhill; I often use the term "hand of God" when referring to how the truck responds when I tap down the cruise control to go a few miles/hr slower when confronting the twists of the same road. I never need to apply my brakes, not once. Often I talk to Duramax drivers at campgrounds who don't know about this simple procedure. If I may make one other comment. The Ike Gauntlet while being an extreme stress test for trucks is not indicative of how trucks perform while towing on 99.9% of North American roads. Here's my case; last year I bought an '17 F250 to tow my TT. I live in the North East where mountains are less of a concern than out West. However, while towing 10k the F250 could not sustain the set speed on cruise control on even the smallest of grades. If set at 65mph, the truck would slow down on an incline to 61-60 before downshifting to 5th, then race up the hill, eventually speed past the 65 then upshift back to 6th gear. I kindly refer to the Ford as having a lazy cruise control. This is real world driving that no one on KZbin tests. I sold the Ford 2 weeks after, and returned to my Duramax's. The Duramax at most will lose 1 mph up hills and rarely needs to downshift. This post is not a poke at Ford, but a request to conduct tests on how trucks perform how real people use them, not just a stress test. You guys are great, and I do appreciate all the effort you put into them.

Didn't they downhill test the Chevy 3500 using cruise control? They loved it then. I love the functionality of using cruise control and the exhaust brake when hauling horses down the grade on I-77 in VA/NC (which is about 7 miles) it performs like a champ and the speed remains constant. I don't even have to hit the brakes...They missed this one....

You had a 17 F250 with the 6.7l powerstroke? How did you like the new superduty vs the 17 Duramax?
@ronfeinberg6 жыл бұрын
Barr Thom I liked the technology of the F250 but not the feel of the solid front axle. The worst was the lazy cruise control that couldn’t keep the set speed while towing on the smallest of inclines. That was the deal breaker for me. Sold it after 1 week.
@truckpette6 жыл бұрын
Exactly, that is how this engine works. They are similar to how the Detroit Series 60 motors in semi trucks work with cruse engaged when climbing a mountain. And, yes, if these gentlemen would understand that as a Duramax engine works they are standard with engine braking technology. Therefore, on a downhill application, on Donner Pass where this was filmed, the engine brake would slow the truck down, and a heavy brake application would not be necessary. I have a 2006 GMC 2500 HD with the LBZ Duramax, and that is exactly how it works. Love this pickup truck to death with the engine braking capability. Keeps me from having to hit the brakes.

I'm a born and raised Chevy guy, but all 3 trucks are badass and have their own ups and downs. It's 100% personal preference honestly. Besides stock power is so restricted with EPA bull shit now days. Delete kits, exhaust, CAI and tune really wake these engines up and make them beastly trucks. Were talking about 200-300hp/tq gain EASY on mild settings for all 3 brands. That's badass if you think about it. Stock is lame for old farts lol I get keeping it stock for warranty purposes, but in reality all 3 stock will basically perform the same or close to each other at least. So you're telling me an engine brake designed to slow the truck down is getting bad remarks for actually slowing the truck down well? The new brake is calibrated with the cruise so unless cruise is on it will slow down aggressively. And why are you making a scene over the trailer hitch? It is the same style hitch that has been out since at least 2015, maybe even 2012 when the frames came out. You never seemed to have a huge complaint before. Pretty hard to argue the results. The GM does in fact look like the big brother of the Honda ridgline, the rear end gear ratios weren’t even close, ram was down on power compared to the gm but was still quicker, .1mpg difference could well be in the computer and I’m surprised they didn’t actually use the fill up method to confirm mpg. The fact that a HD truck can’t get a hitch that will accept your basic safety chains is completely unacceptable-I totally agree on the subjective scoring on that point. Looks like gm is slowing going away from making an actual useful practical work truck and catering to the grocery getters of today’s generation. From the solid axle, to the simplicity of an inline 6, to a masculine truck design, ram has it covered. Sorry GM fan boys lol

I have not driven a Cummins but have an f550 powerstroke dump... just as a disclaimer. I have this exact Sierra(I removed the cheesy bar). Really, it is a modern marvel. Especially the downhill speed control. You really just have to know how to drive it. Basically, you press the brake once, the truck will downshift, and then you can keep an exact speed just by easing on and off the throttle. If you do not give it throttle it will almost stop, at full towing capacity! The safety chain hookup IS stupid, I rigged some chains and resolved that. Overall I think it's an amazing machine. I prefer it to the powerstroke. Can't speak for a cummins.

In the 2017 GMC HD vs Ram vs Ford test at11:09, Kent said about GM, "using the grade shift, the exhaust brake, and your cruise control if you use the cruise control, and it will just lock on. You don't even touch the brake." Since you don't use CC in your tests perhaps at least making this statement in the downhill analysis somewhere would keep viewers from mistakenly thinking that GM's exhaust brake doesn't work very well. Obviously, it does.

RPO LB7 (engine code "1") was first introduced in 2001 and continued until early-2004. It is a 32-valve design with high-pressure common-rail direct injection and an experimental composite design cylinder head. The most common issue with the LB7 is injector failure, so common that a special policy bulletin was issued (#04039B). Fuel leaked and entered the crankcase, causing oil dilution. Early on, customers came forward complaining of severe overheating, and in some situations, blown head gaskets. Initially GM denied it was a problem, but after being sued by a consumer group, GM relented and included overheating and blown head gaskets as a warranted item. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duramax_V8_engine

Don't even need to watch the video, go to the comments and find out who won! Quite obviously the GM won, the RAM fan boys are trying to measure their dick sizes as we speak! But ; TFLT you guys need to go into these comparisons with an open-mind, and not be biased at all. I know both these guys prefer Dodge and Ford over GM. Which is typical, perhaps they are being paid? Unsure. Rule of thumb though ; You cannot give a truck a poor score because of the hitch, that is just flat out stupid. I have zero issues with my '16 Duramax, and watching how you were trying to install the shackle onto the hitch, well. You were acting like my 3-year old when he helps me hitch up my travel trailer.

Why can't the 6.6 duramax in the 3500hd pull as much as other heavy duty trucks ? it has around the same power. It's conventional towing is on par with the other trucks , but not the gooseneck or fifth wheel, which is only around 23,000 pounds, while the Ram 3500 and F-350/ F-450 can tow over 30,000 pounds ?

I hate to agree with you Nathan lol but on the hitch I do. I ended up buying a new hitch for my truck at the GM factory one was garbage. Also it’s interesting how my 2015 2500 has a max tow of 17500# and this one has a max of 13000. That low number is useless to me. I won’t be buying a new GM any time soon. Great video and good work taking a hard line on that.
@tacopro2187 жыл бұрын
I believe the lower tow capacity is due to the fact that the GMC is the off-road version.

C Nevs I have a 2015 2500 HD Duramax Diesel Chevrolet the tow rating on it is 17100 lb gooseneck 5th wheel and 12000 lb off the rear tag hitch I think you just have your numbers confused.

Taco Pro it’s possible. I know there was a recent drastic cut. One of the previous IKEs they ran with the goose it was in the 13k range.
@NordicNevs7 жыл бұрын
like a rock that’s what I was getting at. Our 5er/goose was in the 17s and conventional at 12k. The video posts max towing numbers as the Ram had 17xxx and the GM 13,000. Disappointed in those numbers. Just weird how our trucks are the same (15s) as the new ones (17+) with the exception of the power plant, yet the sharp decline in reported towing numbers is present even with all the engine upgrades that were made. Alas. I’ll keep my 2015 lol

The Fast Lane Truck it's not that hard to figure out how to get those hooks in the holes. If you put it at the right angle it goes right on. I wonder how well you guys would do on a kindergarten shape test
@trailblazer6327 жыл бұрын
They put the safety hooks on upside down and backwards lol. This is the shit that scaree me with people towing heavy loads. "Points down" is the proper hookup method. Had they pushed the hook points through the small entrance hole and out the side cutout the hooks fit perfectly fine. If your hooks point up and your safety catches fail your hooks fall out of the freaking hitch lol
@nwedrick7 жыл бұрын
So let me get this right, in a downhill test where brake fade and runaway vehicles is a big issue you downgrade a truck that downshifts and slows you down with little braking. How is that anything but a plus cause you know you can slow down and come to a stop if you need to and you're not going to overheat your brakes. That should have given it a better score.
@k.r.v.42197 жыл бұрын
In the GMC going down hill the grade braking works best with the cruise control on! Hey Nathan! It is NOT the trucks fault the safety chain hooks are too small!!! But if the two? I like that Ram best! As much as I like that Blue in the Harvest Package, the beautiful Brown Frost Beige Interior color is not available with the blue or harvester red, you get stuck with the boring black! Mine would be a Laramie in Pearl white and the brown Frost Beige Interior! It’s too bad cause I like that Blue!

I would totally agree with you on the safety chain loops in my opinion it's a very stupid design and I do believe the new Fords have got something similar which is also aggravating. Curious why you didn't use the higher horsepower Cummins option When comparing it with a newer higher horsepower Duramax? The ram equipped with the aisin transmission would have been a better comparison to the new Duramax, in my opinion.

GABE Hatfield Cummins is hands down the best engine available, but as far as a overall truck that’s subjective . I would say ford , although looks like ram completely just knocked it out of the park with the 2019 !
@calebniederhofer6786 жыл бұрын
chuck koscinski the 6.7 uses over 40% of the 5.9 . That’s cool its all preference , but from a reliability , economy , towing stand point Cummins is better . It’s the only commericial rated medium duty engine compared to duramax and ford who are both a light duty engine . V8 produce a lot of torque but at a much greater curve they don’t have the same low end torque Cummins produces at low rpms
@WilliamStewart16 жыл бұрын
Caleb Niederhofer That's incorrect, ever since the emmisions were put on the 6.7 it's been a disaster. I know many people who are always having issues with thier 6.7's including myself. The 5.9's were gems, but the 6.7 is a far cry from it. Realistically if you look at it right, since emissions have come into play, the Dmax has been the most reliable.
@calebniederhofer6786 жыл бұрын
William Stewart lol all of the diesels after mid 07 have them . I never once said , dpf is not a problem I hate it like everyone else . Cummins is the best engine as far reliability , maintenance, towing . You are going way off what I even said lol

You are not making any sense , current diesel to current diesel is what I’m talking about . I’m not comparing a 2018 to a 5.9 or 7.3 as far as reliability of course , less emissions is always better . Engine runs cooler , better mileage .

The fact that a 3/4 ton GM Diesel has a max tow of 14,500k lbs in a LTZ/SLT platform is sad when a 1/2 ton GM with the Gas 6.2 has a max tow of 12,500. I wanted a L5P until I seen the #’s on GM’s website. I will be sticking with RAM!

So a computer difference of .1 mpg and 2 seconds (give or take right?)? So basically even and no clear winner. If you had a heavier trailer you may want that GM engine brake. Chain hooks? That's a $100 fix to get larger hooks that you could have gotten with the trailer when you bought it. You subjectively nit picked for things that aren't really a problem or lack of capability. No added points for no need for a weight distributing hitch for the GM and Ford. New safety hooks are cheaper that a weight distributing hitch.

Excuses? Lol. I lean toward Ford; but, I'm also about fairness and objectivity. I'm sorry common sense and statistics escape you. Subjective scores should be based on real shortcomings. Is it the truck manufacturers fault for not conforming to the trailer manufacturer or vice versa? Maybe the trailer manufacturer needs to update their tow hooks to accommodate newer trucks. An exhaust brake that works too well? Oh, the horror...... Do you know that they even used it correctly?
