What i like about the climaxes to many great Disney films is that when the hero fights the main villain, the villains usually reveal their TRUE colors, making the tensions much higher. With Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, She reveals the extent of her true powers by turning into a powerful dragon! With Gaston from Beauty and the Beast, his hair is losen making him look more beast-like throughout the battle with Beast, and then here Ratigan finally snaps after trying to keep his anger at bay throughout the movie, revealing Ratigan to be a blood-hungry savage rat where the only thing he wants now is to kill Basil in cold blood with his bare hands! This completely throws the viewer off and it makes the tensions really high cuz we never see this side of the villain before and is why these battles are so great!!

That is something I've noticed least of all in John Musker and Ron Clements' films, which Great Mouse Detective is one of. The others they've done like Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Hercules have the same kind of villains who act smooth and comical with their schemes and mannerisms until about they finally lose it and undergo a more monstrous transformation, like Jafar turning into the scary cackling maniac, the cobra, and the genie, Ursula into a demonic giant, Hades with all his fiery tantrums, and of course Ratigan here with his more animalistic look as a rat. That is a strong note to leave them on that breaks the surface of their calm conniving demeanors and shows them for the monsters they really are, showing the duality of human nature.
@lunerblade13
@lunerblade13 6 жыл бұрын
I would say that unlike maleficnet and jafar ratigans transition was much more interesting since we see this develop over time instead of it all happening in the last act. We see how ratigan reacts to being called a rat (as we see him kill a subordinate of his in the most inhumane way possible for rodents) when he really desires to play the professional mouse persona burying his true animalistic nature. It acts as a ticking time bomb til the final act where we see it explode in feral instinctive fury.

I always loved this scene as a kid, but I appreciate it all the more as an adult because of all the subtle nuances I can find. For example, how Ratigan becomes so enraged at Basil that he becomes feral. It's fitting, because it was the one difference between him and Basil: both were masterminds in their own right, with high intelligence, but Basil was civilized whereas Ratigan was evil, and here we see that inside, he truly is an animal. Then there's the part where Basil rings the bell, just before Big Ben strikes. Throughout the movie, whenever Ratigan rung the bell, it signaled someone's death. Now here, it signals his own death.

Ratigan’s death was really well planned, given you never actually see him die. By never showing his death, Disney left a fairly open ending that easily allows the storyline to continue should a second movie be made. It helps that he’s a rat, an animal capable of surviving huge falls. It’s almost like when Palpatine fell in the Death Star, it leaves room to revive the villain.

I've always liked the part when Ratigan slashes Basil. It seems and sounds that it would've really hurt him but I just think that was a cool idea to have the protagonist injured, and how Basil manages to use his strength while he clings onto the edge of the hour hand. It shows how strong he is. But Vincent Price though, he's GREAT!

When it comes to villainous breakdowns Ratigan's is one of the best ones old Disney came up with. A Doctor Jekyll to Mr. Hyde. (Long paragraphs incoming.) When we first meet Ratigan we see what kind of a character he is. He is intimidating to those around him, charismatic, and confident in his plans. He would think up a scheme then have his men complete it, gathering uniforms, to parts for a doll version of the Queen. He doesn't like getting his hands dirty. He does however like to make sure everyone knows how great he is, and that it was HIS idea being put into action. The executions he had for Basil and Dawson at the lair for instance. Ratigan: "I am such a genius I didn't know which to choose, so I decided to use them all." However despite his confident appearance he is also very concerned about how others see him. Despite being a rat he hates being referred to as a rat. He sees it as an insult and has sudden outbursts or simply kills those who who state the fact he is a rat. Ratigan has a little more restraint when Basil calls him one. I think that despite how much he hates Basil and will easily overpower him, Ratigan would rather use his wit and not his strength. To beat his hated foe. Now for the Jekyll to Hyde change. Ratigan like everyone else has a monster chained up at all times that loves a chance to be violent and ruthless. Ratigan "unlocked it's chains" on the airship when Fidget suggested lightening the load, and Ratigan responds by throwing him overboard instead of Olivia (a logical choice). This causes the Big Ben scene, Ratigan doesn't like to get his hands dirty but he is willing to do so now, using more direct methods to solve his problems. At some point when Basil jams Ratigan's cloak into the gears and saves Olivia and escapes Ratigan had enough and releases the monster he has kept chained up all this time. His physical look changes to match the monster. As he climbs up the gears he no longer cares about his expensive clothes, which are torn as he scurries up the gears, he no longer has a plan to use his wit to beat Basil, just strength. The final change is when his claws appear. He is no longer a large, clever "mouse" he is what he always was, a rat. a 180 character shift and that's why I like it so much.

Just noticed his last words and last laugh are recycled from earlier in the film when he captures Basil.

It's funny. Ratigan hit Basil 8 times without much evidence of damage. Either Ratigan was really weak, or Basil really knew how to take a hit

Considering the self destructive stuff Basil does and how easily Ratigan throws mice around, it's probably Basil being tough.

Ratigan great vilain, great reference to the British literature, Jekyll and Hyde when he transforms in the animal rat, Dracula for the way he is dressed, Jack the ripper for the hat though.. and also the fact that Basil is named basil might refer to The Picture of Dorian Gray when Dorian kills Basil, but then again I may go too far ^^

The entire film Ratigan is on the verge of a breakdown. Every time he's disrespected, he has to use every single fiber of his being to not just explode, and it comes through a few times earlier (I AM NOT A RAT!). But this was it for him. Basil had outwitted and outmaneuvered him at every turn, and he realized the only way to kill Basil was some good old fashioned braun, becoming exactly what Basil called him the entire film.
