Hi Troy, well done on the UHF radio. About aerials, as you mentioned the base antenna is at the highest point, I have also noticed that other people use UHF radios in the horizontal state.

Thanks for the basic tips for us newbies. Question though: in all the videos which I've watched about antenna performance, nothing is ever mentioned about their reception performance, only how well they can transmit? I'm often picking up chat with a LOT of static. I turn the squelch up to cut out the weaker signals, but still the noisy transmissions tend to persist. Could you do a quick one on how to get the best reception from our antennas, please? Thanks

I've always wondered what the line is concerning an emergency. If you have a car crash, that might be an emergency. If you have a flat tyre somewhere without a phone, does that count as a emergency and warrant the use of channels 5 or 35?
@GMEaus3 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, common sense needs to apply here. If the situation is truly an emergency, use 5 and 35. If you have a situation like a flat tyre but have adequate food and water and your life is not in danger, it is better to try and make contact with someone on another channel such as the call channel (11) or the highway channel (40)

It is not suggested to transmit on ch 35 as a simplex channel, in fact it is not ideal to use any repeater input channel. I advise to use ch 5 with duplex on. Why, the repeater hears you on 35 and re-transmits out on 5. Those listening on 5 will hear you but they can't respond as your listening on 35. Clear as mud :)
@GMEaus3 жыл бұрын
Yes this is correct, however we didn’t go into this much detail in this video as it is aimed at beginners 😊
@adelarsen9776 Жыл бұрын
Note : Beginners are the ones who need to be taught that 31-38 are repeater input frequencies and NOT TO BE USED. Also, there is no one listening on Ch 5 or Ch 11. No one is there. If you've got a problem or emergency it's best to use Ch 40. Another tip is to not hold your hand held sideways. There's a huge loss when turned sideways.@@GMEaus

Re Channels, also avoid using 31-38 and 71-78 as they are repeater inputs. It is a real pain having people operate simplex on repeater inputs, why not lock them out on new radios? So why not have squelch turned up full all the time?
@GMEaus3 жыл бұрын
Hi John, this can be done but by having the squelch opened fully it will allow more transmissions to be picked up, including an increase in the amount of unwanted/weaker radio signals. These transmissions are usually heard as static/white noise which may be very irritating to the user. So for user comfort many opt for a lower squelch setting.
