I think that classical chess would be far more interesting if draws were worth a third, or even a quarter of a point. It would definitely incentivize aggressive chess, which would incite a bigger rollercoaster of emotions within the viewer. Which is what all sports need to build a large loyal fan base.

This just reminded me the game between Hikaru and Magnus at the 2018 squinfield. Hikaru was tearing up and was letting the clock tick down as he was in a bad position. You can see the passion he has for the game and it screams the phrase “losing is not normal”. In this case losing is also a great teacher and you can’t feel it completely unless you experience it.

To summarize it was a very big blunder by him, and that's why he was so angr at himself!

The way to help fix the fact that draws are so common in chess is to make it more rewarding to win than it already is. A different scoring for a tournament would be interesting to try. For example 3 points for a win 1 for a draw and zero for a loss would make going for a win more rewarding and encourage people to take risks.

The idea of accepting loses is to acknowledge the lose, become better, and winning it in the next time, and more importantly to not too obsessed with the loses that person that loses ruin his/her life in certain way, like become abuser or psychopath. Magnus's story about buying a board is kinda funny, but most professionals don't spend money on the thing they're doing. It's the same in Magic: The Gathering. All the professional players borrow from friends or dealers or something. It's the same for a lot of other games. That said, if Magnus walked into my store and said he needed a board, I'd probably tell him he could have it if I could play him in a game. It'd be cool to tell my friends I played the world champion on a board that I sold / gave him.

if youre clearly the better player try playing them with odds. for example they start with all their pieces like normal but you start with one less pawn or one less knight. plenty of ways to mix it up and its fun for both sides and you still learn. if youre playing online and cant start with a custom board then you can just move your knight for the first few moves and let them take it for free on purpose or you can sacrifice it for a pawn on purpose. you dont even have to tell them that youre doing it because theyre not good because youre trying to help them, you can just say youre making it a challenge for yourself if they ask.

@@arnoldo8642 never understood this tbh. I am quite litterally terrible at chess while one of my friends plays in a club for years. The first time i played against him, he was like "i will not move my queen to make it fair", i was so furious i played probably the best chess i have ever done and made him use his queen. I felt insulted by him making it easier for me. It is like saying: you are so bad you will blunder your queen anyway so i won`t need mine.

@@darkgrundi9543 he could have thought you were that bad or maybe he thought he was much better at the game than he actually was. either way he clearly misread the situation. a queen makes a pretty big difference so especially if he never played you he shouldnt have gone that far or started out like that. thats why i said in my original comment that it should be clear that youre the better player if youre going to going to give someone piece odds. but of course you should both agree on it first. unless you both dont care and youre just having fun. but to touch on what you said about feeling angry and insulted, trust me if someone is actually better than you (especially if theyre MUCH better) you might have fun the first couple games or even longer than that but at some point you will get tired of getting destroyed and not have fun playing anymore. the person youre playing with will also likely get tired of having no challenge. at which point you might prefer to play with odds and you might not take offense to it because that might end up being the only enjoyable way left to play each other for both sides and the only way where you realistically have a chance of winning.

Losing sucks, anyone who says otherwise is a straight up liar. It shouldn't ever feel good to lose, if it does then you wont ever make it to the highest level. Lost count how many times I cried after feeling like I failed playing cricket. As a bowler if someone got the best of me I'd learn from it and make sure the next time I played them it wouldn't happen again. No batsman ever got the best of my twice. I feel like that mentality is why I was able to play the highest level without making a State squad. Even playing backyard cricket I'd get a bit salty sometimes lol
