🔹 3 Chess Endgame Principles Every Chess Player Should Know | Endgame study - • 3 Chess Endgame Princi...
In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov shares with you a chess endgame study by Richard Réti, who was one of the greatest chess players. You will learn how to play the Rook vs Pawn endgame, especially how to win with the rook against a passed pawn.
Reti composed this endgame study in 1928 and it became one of the classical endgame studies of all time. It also illustrates a very important chess rule, a move, called the Zugzwang.
Watch the video lesson and see if you know how to win in the Rook vs Pawn endgame. There is also a puzzle challenge for you at the end of the video.

For end puzzle, Bf1. If black promotes, Rh3 is mate. If black captures bishop, rook takes and rook+king endgame is ez.

If playing black-depending on the opponent- I'd take bf1 during promotion just to force the rook to dance for 5 more lol...and avoid the rh3 mate

1. Bf1, promoted to knight, 2. Rf2, Kg3 or Kh1 Kg3 loses knight to Rg2. So Kh1 3. Bg2, Kh2 4. Be4, Kg3 loses for same reason, so Kh3. But, 5. Rg2, and knight doesn't have a safe square.

after 3,,Kh1 the black King is blocked and Knight is blocked too whenever he goes he is lost so no need t o play Bg2. better is move of white King and then taking the knight for free. Am I right?

The answer is Bf1 pawn takes ,then the rook takes. If the pawn push forward ,then Rh3#

Winning move is Bf1, if black takes respond Rxf1 (king and rook vs king is winning). If black promotes instead we have checkmate with Rh3. Black could also move the king but then we just take the pawn with the bishop and have a king and rook vs king endgame. I think this is the answer.

If g1=N, white plays Rf2+, and the knight is trapped wherever the king moves.

A small tip, place the endgame puzzle at the end so you don't have to pause or go back. I saw it quickly enough, but some puzzles need way more time.

5:30 I THINK Bf1 if gxf1 then Rxf1 and we win and if g1=Q Rh3# if any king move then Bxg2 and we are winning g1=N I mean there is no mate but we still are winning

The solution to the last puzzle is Bf1. If black push the pawn to any piece besides of knight there's chackmate on h3, if he makes a knight there's a winning position=R+B vs. N. If black takes the Bishop white takes back with a winning position and if black move's the king than white takes the pawn with a winning position.

Seeing the comments about the puzzle at the end of the game, one thing popped in my head. What if black promotes to a Knight on g1? Rh3 won't be a checkmate in that position

Yeah... but it is not a problem that requires to win in a specific number of moves... Actually, that is the difference between a problem and a study. Problems say a specific number of moves to win or draw. Studies do not. 😊 Greetings from Costa Rica🇨🇷

Rook and King is enough so you can sac the Bishop for the Knight if you want to simplify it. But Rook and 1 Pawn can beat a Knight or Bishop, Rook and Bishop will obviously beat a Knight

The end puzzle is pretty funny. The solution is Bf1. If gxf1=Q then recapture with the rook and it’ll be King and rook endgame vs a lone king already on the periphery of the board. The funnier variation is if black ignores Bf1 and just queens on g1, then it’s mate in one after Rh3#

The puzzle at the end of video: Bf1 should be right move. Then it could be forced because xf1 is probably the best move black can play. If the black tries to hold on to his pawn, still bishop can capture the pawn. Whatever happens, white's gonna give up his bishop for the pawn. Then it's now a king & rook vs king endgame.
