Some shots of the class 373 GNER Eurostars taken April May 04 - these are some of my early shots as only started using a video camera on 3 April 04

I have to say, the 373 shape is unique! The carriages are so box like. I love it! And their pantos can go very high!

It's amazing how much changes in four years! I remember seeing the Eurostars at various locations along the southern ECML. I liked them! Now both the Eurostar sets and GNER are gone!!! I have a good mind to march straight to the Transport Minister's office and demand all of the old stuff back on track! (And don't you shake your head at me!!!) Still, you've done good videos!!! 5/5!

The Class 373 sets were actually used to cover for GNER 125/225 sets that were being refurbished at the time. By 2005 these had all been completed, and the 373s all went back to Eurostar.

Wow I love the sound they make as they go by at high speed!! It sounds like a series of superbikes rushing by. Shame they're not around here anymore, but at least they can run as they were intended on high-speed 1 now.

no problem - another feature of these unique wonderful machines and much missed on the ECML

the wires are raised on approach and over level crossings to give enough safety clearance for high lorries and buses to prevent the high voltages from jumping/arcing on to the vehicles

@macaniza7 No - the contract/lease for GNER to use Eurostars finished December 2005. National Express East Coast subsequently took over from GNER. NEEC then had the franchise taken off them by the Rail Regulator with a temporary company formed called East Coast Trains to run the east coast service. ECT still run trains to Leeds and York of course but am not aware of a 'White Rose' service as such like there used to be in the much missed Eurostar days

GNER Eurostar sets finished on the ECML in Dec 05 - a sad day indeed - the sets in question I understand are now operating TGV France. You can of course still see Eurostars on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link

I think the reason for providing these class 373s was to increase capacity on the busy East Coast Main Line between London Kings Cross to Leeds and Edinburgh Waverley via York. It was not successful and customers are still putting up with the class 91 and HST although things will change in the next few years hopefully when the new express trains will run on one of the busiest lines in the United Kingdom.

@EMT43055 thanks mate - I have many happy memories of them especially on warm summer evenings when given the right wind/weather conditions could hear them approaching from way off sometimes even before the warning claxon sounded for the dropping of the level crossing barriers - there are some more clips of them on my youtube site

Sorry my comment is mis-leading - there were stretches where they could run at 125 but there were significant stretches where they were restricted to 110 due to issues with the way the pantographs reacted with the overheads. As I understand the 373 pantos were designed to work with catenary designed to handle extremely fast moving trains and the pantos had a higher pressure contact on the wire

Oddly enough I only started using a video camera one day before you did. (2nd Apr. 2004). Only difference is I didn't use it for trains until a week later

Be extremely careful !! GNER and Eurostar are two distinct companies !! A GNER train can NOT be a Eurostar train. It is named Class 373. (BRC373).

The lease ended Dec 05 - perhaps finances dictated not renewing it or GNER felt did not need them? Also the 373s were restricted to 110mph as against the 91s and HSTs 125mph. On a quiet evening you could hear them approaching way off.

They were fine units, but it was a bit of a waste of a 186mph train being restricted to 110mph stop-start services on the ECML. It wasn't their ideal habitat.

Also they could not run 2 sets on the same set of tracks as they were power hungry, they never ran either to as far in York due to the gauge problems and signalling

If you mean the Eurostars then there only allowed up to 110 mph because of the way it's pantographs react with British overhead lines

Eh? This was 2004, before they were even running on HS1. They no longer operate on the ECML and still run Eurostar services, albeit at a reduced frequency.

Does anyone know why they have the generators or what ever they are at the front carriage I always thought it was an extra engine

They are built as twin power sets for the Channel Tunnel without a DVT unit. If one trainset gets into trouble they can be broken in two midway the other power set can be driven by the second driver out of the Tunnel once all the passengers transfer from the broken down set.
