@@j.corbygaming Hacking is so controversial. There are cases where I think its okay. If you have a very sentimental pokemon you can't transfer for whatever reason (like its on the OG cartridges or something), recreating it through hacks is fine. It's not hurting anyone. The real issue is with comp. Hacking really feels like cheating there but, to give an example, Enamorous. If you really want it on your team you have to play through the entirety of Arceus and play the absolutely horrible catching mini game to get it. That's at least 4 hours of investment for a single pokemon but probably more since most people aren't speedrunners. And ideally you at least want it with low atk IVs but if you get one with really really high atk and crap other stats... well then either you have to restart or live with it. Then you have to grind for bottle caps which, thank god, you can buy in SV and then spend another hour minimum EV training it. And that's just one pokemon. You have to do this for a team of 6. And depending on the pokemon you want you might have to go out and purchase entirely different games and play for hours and then grind to get one with the right stats/nature/etc you want. At the very least we have showdown to actually test teams. Imagine doing all that and then realizing that the pokemon you just spent 5 hours getting is the wrong fit for the team. Imagine balancing that against a job and bills and possibly even kids of your own. Hacking is against the rules. But I can absolutely sympathize with the desire to. If Nintendo wants to stop hacking at events, they should have the in-event players construct teams like in showdown and then the tournament organizers turn it into a rental team for them to use during the tournament. That way there is no unfairness. Everyone has access to the same perfect pokemon and winning has everything to do with strategy. Edit: Grammar

One thing that’s always bothered me about shiny locking Pokémon is that it feels like it goes against what Pokémon stands for. What I mean by that is Pokémon has always been about possibilities, no two play throughs will be the same. By removing part of the possibility of someone finding something rare like that is just backwards towards the meaning of a game being it’s own separate universe. The likelihood of a kid finding a shiny starter randomly is very low but never impossible, and I would like to believe that it made a great memory for whoever that was.

For the record, the Master Ball was hard-coded to never fail. It’s a check done before doing any calculations.
@digifreak9010 ай бұрын
But, from what I understand, there was actually a glitch in gen 1 that could rarely cause it to fail. (The same glitch also affected moves that could never miss, such as Swift)
@brianhull240710 ай бұрын
@@digifreak90 This is incorrect. For one thing, the catch algorithm and the move calculation algorithm are entirely separate, so no single glitch could affect both like that. Now, it is true that, in the Japanese Red and Green Versions (and maybe the Japenese Blue Version), Swift might have been affected by the 1/256 glitch, but this was never the case for any of the non-Japanese games. It is also true that, if an attack was resisted by both of the foe’s types and the damage calculation yields 0, the move is erroneously said to miss the target (though this wouldn’t have affected Swift as, prior to Gen II, only one type (Rock) resisted Normal-type moves). However, no Pokémon game has ever had a glitch that had any chance of causing the Master Ball to fail. This is just a common misunderstanding. Swift bypasses all accuracy checks in Gen I (at least the non-Japanese ones), and no type combination resists it twice, so it never misses; the Master Ball bypasses all the calculations done in the catch algorithm, so it literally cannot fail unless you try to use it on a trainer’s Pokémon. The myth comes from the 1/256 glitch, which causes moves with 100 accuracy to have a 1/256 chance of missing. See, the accuracy check for moves works by generating a number between 0 and 255, inclusive, and compares that to the result of the accuracy calculation (the move’s accuracy value (255 for moves with 100% accuracy), a multiplier for modifications to the user’s accuracy, and a multiplier for modifications to the target’s evasion). If the random number is less than the calculated value, the move hits; otherwise, the move misses. Because 255 is not less than 255, generating that number would cause even 100% accuracy moves to miss. However, Swift bypasses all accuracy checks (in non-Japanese Gen I games, this even includes the ones that cause moves to miss Pokémon that just used Fly or Dig), so it is unaffected by that glitch. (Incidentally, using an X Accuracy on a Pokémon causes all its moves to bypass accuracy checks, too, which also avoids the glitch.) This doesn’t affect anything else, though. For one thing, the catch algorithm is specifically designed to never guarantee a capture (except when using the Master Ball), so the value to check against would basically never be 255 in the first place. Additionally, again, Master Balls bypass all the calculations; if it gets used, the game doesn’t even generate any random numbers and just determines that the capture succeeds immediately.
@DrPeeper10 ай бұрын
@@digifreak90nope, the glitch you are talking about is chance based, the master ball is rigged to always catch before any checks are done. That's also why the master ball glitch clone doesn't have the 100% catch chance

A lot of shiny hunters have a story from their youth where they freaked out because they thought their game was glitched when they really got a shiny pokemon. They turn the game off, the shiny is lost, and years later they know what happened. This spurred me on to do a reclaim hunt for Spinda in pokemon Ruby. Shiny locking may be there to prevent these cases, but why? I look back on that fondly, it wasn't/isn't an issue, it's a chance to revisit something where I otherwise wouldn't. It's not like there are prominent battle facilities nowadays, the true postgame -is- shiny hunting for a lot of people, myself included. The legendaries being shiny locked in Scar/Vio is heartbreaking, one of the main reasons I got the DLC was because I wanted to shiny hunt Spectrier and Glastrier. There's no way to hunt them, so I don't really see a reason to catch them. I already have their non-shiny forms in Shield, why would I bother catching them again? Some may argue that this is one of the things GF wants to avoid; making legendaries not appealing because they can't be shiny. I agree with the reasoning, but only for new legendaries. There's 0 reason to shiny locked already released legendaries because we already have access to those legendaries in their intended settings! If it's a post game treat, there's no reason for it to be shiny locked! An argument could be made that newer players will have access to these legendaries for the first time in these games, but even then I don't think anyone would complain about randomly getting a shiny legendary. Also shiny events suck. I didn't hunt this shiny pokemon, I didn't really do anything for it but input a code or just check the mystery gift. There's no point! The point of shiny hunting is the hunt! There's no special moment associated with it, so the only reason I would bother is to check a box on the shiny living dex. This applies to event pokemon in general though, I don't like the concept of just getting a pokemon from the internet with nothing around it. The Zeraora event from Sw/Sh was a perfect example of fixing the issue. By having the event be a community-driven raid event, the special moment became less about shiny hunting and more about overcoming a difficult challenge and being rewarded with something cool at the end. This is also why the Ogre Oustin' shiny munchlax works for me, that minigame was BRUTAL and me and my friends had a blast playing it. Shiny locking pokemon strips away special moments before they happen in favor of a uniform experience. I don't like it, and I don't think there's a good reason to do it.

I think what could work is to make the first encounter of a "Shiny Locked" pokemon to be impossible to be shiny the first encounter. So that way, those who are playing casually will get the pokemon, how it looked on the box arts. However, once you soft reset, the shows that you are trying to shiny hunt (as there isn't much of a reason to soft reset if you are a casual player), so this restriction would be turned off. I don't even think this could be that difficult to implement, they could just do a similar that the older Animal Crossing games did were, when you load your save file, a switch is turned off and when you save and quit, this switch is turned off. But if you turn the console off and then turn it back on, this switch will still be turned on and when the game detects this, it would know that you quit without saving and tell you. Similarly, when you encounter a "Shiny Locked" pokemon, it turns a switch on and this switch isn't turned off until the encounter is over. So if you soft reset, this switch will still be on and when this switch is on, the pokemon can be shiny. The switch will turn on a second once the pokemon is shown, so that the first encounter can't be shiny. I think this method would probably satisfy both parties who do and don't want shiny locks.

@@romanaww it’s not so much that the map messes with the encounters but rather that because they are overworld encounters, they opted for having them show up the same all the time instead of giving them a spawn animation that would make sense for them to be able to be shiny (like Dynamax Adventures made more sense). They could’ve had them appear through a wormhole or through an actual animation (as they should) but that’s too much work.

You would probably have to go through alot of their old posts (specifically mentioning pla) and compare but its interesting to see how different the data is for these games. For example as another comment pointed out in the thread in pla you can force shiny encounters because how they are determined in your home village vs how they are set up in a cone of influence in SCVT since the game is always fully loading in the map. Kaphotics was one of the first people to get this information out with a full spawn table and everything back in the day.

I want to tackle some of the arguments in favor of shinylocking The main one is for Pokémon that are either in the overworld or in cutscenes as not shiny. This rule has been broken several times, most recently in BDSP where literally nothing is locked, but also in Let's Go, Ultra Sun/Moon (where all the ultra beasts have cutscenes but aren't locked) and the Crown Tundra (where the Swords and the Regis weren't locked, but the galarian birds were) Let's Go is an interesting case, which ties into the Snorlax example. Snorlax is clearly visible in the overworld, and isn't shinylocked. As a matter of fact, nothing is. Even Mewtwo, arguably the most story-relevant Pokémon in the game, with a pre-rendered cutscene, isn't locked. The only exception is the starter, which has a unique model and can even be customized somewhat. It's the only case where the game has to care about a Pokémon being shiny or not after you catch it, because of its cutscenes. It's impossible to know GameFreak's true intentions, but it is believable that some locked Pokémon were locked as a marketing ploy. The galarian birds were one of the only things locks in the Crown Tundra, and that's because they were given away as rewards for joining online battles. There are also examples of shinies being given away as promos for movies, as you mentioned. I think this is a much more believable reason than the "cutscene consistency" argument Also Cosplay Pikachu has shiny models that are totally unused
@lunathegodkiller11 ай бұрын
I can't really say much for the rest of the points made, but I'm pretty sure BDSP didn't have shiny locking because they're "faithful remakes" of games made before shiny locking was a concept.

Random idea: What if instead of saving shinies for events, what if there was a third form of a Pokemon? And this third form will also just have a different color palette, just like a regular shiny? As someone who shiny hunts a lot, I hate shiny locks. Mostly because receiving a shiny legendary from an event isn't satisfying, compared to finding them yourself. I'm always really excited to get a shiny through my hard work that I put in, weather it be from soft rests, runaway methods, chaining, overworld encounters, or even RNG manipulation. Not to mention that most the mon that are shiny locked don't really have good shinies, with some exceptions. Personally I think that shiny locking hinders replayablity, the only reason why I go back to SwSh is to shiny hunt in Dynamax adventures. Not to mention we've been waiting over a decade for some shinies to be officially released (Ex: Victini). I honestly think that it's a bit lazy and unfair to release shiny locks for limited time events, not everyone has the same access to games stores, enough time for the event, etc.

After watching this it does make sense in a way for why shiny locking exists because of the whole "Play the game stop reseting bs" but that what shiny pokemon in this case are actually special some of which you can only get once some probably from time to time. But its not a very on point logical reason really. For example for poeple who gotten the Shiny Celebi to promote the Zarude movie those codes needed to be picked up, which doesnt seem to difficult but there are those who dont have access to certain locations so people take the spare codes and scalp and sell them online and from what I saw at the time they were going for $10 USD to $150 USD. This also was a big issue with Shiny Zacian and Zamazenta same prices and all. Then of course there is also Pokemon GO in which events like Shiny mew, celebi or any of the mythics people can't really access them without the special ticket event quests which also those quests are tediously stupid, it would cost a person 5USD or even more, and finally location of the person cause they could be out in the middle nowhere and would possibly resort to Spoofing (which is not really a problem imo but still again tedious).
@uorimoon11 ай бұрын
I think for SV, the main reason for shiny locking is possibly the fact that there is no transition screen between cutscene, OW, Battle and capturing transfer and they weren't able to figure out how to code it properly so they just decided to lock it. I'm hoping theyre able to figure out how to allow us to hunt them in gen 10. Even if its just another "max raid den" situation. For other shinies being locked, I do think that anything that is heavily involved in the story makes sense as well. Sucks, but it makes sense for them to use them for cutscenes and then suddenly change.
@elemomnialpha11 ай бұрын

Once while the opponent has it and once when you catch. This led to a funny little bug where your opponent can have a shiny on their team that turns normal after and vice versa. Shiny-locking's only purpose is that they can "sell" you the shiny later (yes, sell, because events are basically massive advertisements to do stuff that might lead to more sales). It also changes it from 'rare' to a 'handout', but that would also count for guaranteed shinys like Gyarados I guess. So in the end, it's always in bad faith and shouldn't be endorsed.

Getting a shiny legendary is such a massive reward for a huge undertaking. The amount of sheer determination it takes to do that over and over again over again is more than most people have the patience for, and as such, is a HUGE flex to own a legitimate shiny. And then Game Freak decided to remove the fun out of their game so they could MAYBE give you the same shiny legendary as everyone else, with a gimmick trainer name. Not even your own. Kinda like they've been selling us half a Pokedex every game since Sword/Shield, and then making us pay for another 30% of it over two DLCs. That's literally their MO lately. "Hey. Those things you used to enjoy in Pokemon? Like, you know. All of the Pokemon? Or shiny Legendaries? Or post game battle content? Or optional EXP share? Or even Set Mode? We took them out. Maybe we'll let you pay for some of them later." It is depressing as hell to see what's become of something I've loved since I was a child.

Me, resetting for months for a shiny Squirtle in JP FireRed: I AM playing the game, been playing for months. It's called shiny hunting, it's a perfectly valid way to play the game, get over it

I really like how Gnoggin (at least I think that's what he's called) was implemented here! Great job!

Shiny Locks are stupid especially when they lock a Pokémon that was previously unlocked 😐 ALL the legendary Pokémon coming back to the Indigo Disk are shiny locked… even the ones you were able to shiny hunt in the PREVIOUS game 🤦♂️ Sword and Shield locked Type:Null when you could reset for it in Sun and Moon and same with Poipole in SwSh

Gamefreak have said that one reason for shiny locking legendaries is that fighting a legendary pokemon is meant to be a special moment and that reseting for hours ruins this special moment, which is a very stuoid reason
