Well done! Thanks for the time invested in this. I had installed the beta to a system several days ago and had been quite lost until viewing this video.

Good job with the video. There are a few more things that could be mentioned about GNOME 3: - no icons on desktop - dash is a good place for people wanting to switch between apps and workspaces with mouse (it's close to Hot Corner, doesn't slide in/out like workspaces popup) - another good and fast way to switch workspaces is Ctrl + Alt + Up/Down - notifications But your screencast was already quite long.

Good review. I *hated* my first few hours with Gnome 3, I could not reason out why they did certain things they did. After reading some of the design decisions, I decided to give it another shot. After using it for a few days and trying out Unity or standard Gnome, it was a lot more clear that for me at least, my work flow had improved a lot, things flowed a lot better.

Excellent review, professionally done and, although long, it goes direct to the points of interest, specially those who are target of misconceptions. It's a beta after all, they'll probably add those terminal-only tweaks to the interface in the final product if the community provides enough constructive criticism about it, as you said.

Thanks for this video. I have recently installed Gnome 3 on ubuntu 11.04 beta 2 and it works very well. I recommend installing Gnome Shell over Unity, which seems to be the new standard for Ubuntu 11.04 onwards.

@Keruaran (part IV) i could go on and on with multiple other problems on both shells, but i'm concentrating in what ended doing. After testing a few distros i stayed with fedora 15 for a few months. I did like the gnome 3 but not the software options and conceptions, i could stay and loose some time to learn again to do things better in fedora. I ended moving again to another distro, Caixa Mágica that is Debian/ubuntu based, produced in my country and that it still uses Gnome 2...

Great video! Most of what I've seen/read about GNOME 3 has been fairly negative but your video has motivated me to give it a try when the stable release of Fedora 15 comes out. I'm a KDE user right now and I have been one for most of my time using Linux. However, I'm seriously considering Fedora because I'd like to learn how to write code and develop software. And I know there's a great emphasis on that in Fedora. It would just mean leaving KDE behind as GNOME is the default in Fedora :-(

Man... I've been using Ubuntu since 2007, but I'm definitely going to have to give Fedora a shot. I've been feeling more and more restricted by Ubuntu not allowing me to do things that I want to do. Perhaps Fedora would be a more suitable solution for me. Thanks Adam for the excellent review. It's nice to see someone who appreciates the developers too, that's awesome. Too many trolls out there with no constructive criticism. Oh, and RON PAUL 2012, hehe.

Great review! The Gnome 3 interface looks really promising, but what if I have a computer without hardware graphics acceleration? Will it work? Does Fedora 15 offer an alternative interface?

Hello. This was a very nice review. I think Gnome3 is following Mac OSX ui. Not bad. I think i will use fedora and Gnome3. The only bad thing is the minimize and also the maximize button.

Great review! I just got a used computer from 2005 that I'm thinking of installing Fedora on, and I've heard that GNOME 3 needs hardware acceleration for its graphics. Is that true?
@scottishwildcat13 жыл бұрын
@fgcl2k Yes, Fedora 15 includes the GNOME 3 "fallback" mode, which looks a bit like GNOME 2's panel-based desktop, but is still underpinned by the new GNOME 3 technologies.

@Keruaran I agree... All the reasoning for the Gnome3 dev-team so far was: easy to use, simple and out-of-the-way. So I don't get it how they managed to consider pressing Alt key for 'Power off' option to show up as being simple or intuitive... I'm not a n00b when it comes to computers or OS's but cut me off the internet so I can't google for a how-to and you will probably see me pulling the power cable ;P

Multiple workspaces is a part of Gnome. Compiz just adds effects to it. I can see the time to get information has been reduced, but I guarantee the time to get from task to task has been increased. Making it easier to get to the desktops and different tasks needs to be added before Gnome 3 is rejected by the masses. Just being honest.

Hey nice vid Im a windows user, but have used ubuntu a few times, most recently the newest 11 build with unity. I liked some aspects, yet fedora appears to do a far better job. The main thing that pushes me away from linux though, is small gripes like flashnot being as smooth etc. Are there many problems you think i would find if i switched over?
@MariuszBielski13 жыл бұрын
@Scotsman707 compiz does not work with gnome shell at all. You can still use it in fallback mode though (which looks like old gnome 2 desktop).

@Keruaran (part II) There are a few things i can't understand in both Unity and Gnome 3. Why no desktop, for instance? In every OS your desktop is populated by icons, it's usually the place people leave they work on progress so they can access it quickly. But from now on seams that the only use for the desktop is to have background images. In both gnome 3 and Unity you are imposed a default shell that little is changeable. You lost the ability to use advanced effects and compiz, for instance.

@TheWitheredleaves Huh, And I'm switching from mint 11 to fedora 15 because I like it more. To each their own I suppose. Personally, after trying it out for a little bit I love gnome 3, even if it would be better if it had more attributes of the "traditional desktop"
@Scotsman70713 жыл бұрын
so is it compiz entirely that is cut out or is it just the workspaces? the workspaces i can understand, but i like to play around with wobbly windows and fun things like that

Personally, I think it's a bit silly to say that a clearly placed shutdown option is a "distraction" when GNOME requires the user to dance through a few extra steps to easily jump from one task window to another. Alt-Tabbing requires cycling, the shell requires extra clicks, and even opening multiple browser windows requires a combination of a click and key press. GNOME 3 has some cool features, but they just don't completely add up for a truly productive environment in my opinion.

I tried Debian for a few days another disk that was lying about,Do not really want to try arch for the moment as I have only a 30gb bandwidth cap and need it for streaming and uploading, When something goes wrong and have to reinstall 30gb can be used up quite quickly

@Keruaran i couldn't agree with you more, thou i think people have low tolerance for change, instead of learning. In my case, i was happy with my Ubuntu for about 4 years, and with the introduction of Unity (plus complete silence in response to user complains by canonical) i simply quited Ubuntu and changed distro. I tested a few, and Fedora 15 was in my opinion one of the best! I do prefer Gnome 3 to Unity. I think Gnome 3 is much more well conceived and designed, but both are bad!

@TheWitheredleaves Last night I upgraded Ubuntu Studio it messed up my Nvidia Drivers put loads of applications that I will never use and decided to install fedora on another hard drive and noticed their was no package manager I could have watched this video if fedora came with flash.Ubuntu, Fedora and Open Suse may all have their advantages but as for just getting your Hardware and Networking easily so you can watch a video or write an email they all seem to be complex and time consuming

I can't agree that there's no need for an easily accessible shutdown button since there's no need to restart. A shutdown button is not a restart button. My work-place encourages its users to power-down machines at night and weekends to save energy. Stand-by still uses a bunch of power in comparison. I shutdown a lot. There is also added security by turning your workstation off at night (you can't attack a machine that's not on). Fedora is not a server and a server shouldn't have a GUI anyway.

@ubunterias I disagree... the default should definitely be suspend. I NEVER shutdown my computer, EVER. Literally. It's always in suspend if I'm not using it. I also know FAR more people who also suspend their computers rather than shutdown, and this just makes more sense for an enterprise distro anyway.

I don't see what's wrong with good old window list buttons for switching windows. Easiest, fastest and time proven way. There's so much empty, wasted space on the top panel and you must go here and there just to switch windows. Bad.

@Keruaran (part III) The absence of the minimize button, is one of the stupidest things i ever seen, thou you can enable it by "hacking" some hidden configurations. But this is what going on media players (and other software) in linux distros for some time. For the sake of simplicity you have only tow buttons, play and pause, the stop button has disappeared. To me this is completely nonsense, you can still have the 2 buttons, with play having the function of play and pause, and a stop button...
