Really a great video and you caught the details very well. So as i was the Pilot Flying on this go around I can just explain what happened. We knew upon starting the approach that the tail wind was close to our maximum acceptable of 10Kts. So we closely watched the wind speed and direction. We expected the usual reduction of the wind speed getting closer to the ground. So we accepted the approach because of this and the preceeding landing Aircraft. As you noticed we asked for a wind-check shortly before landing to confirm our decision. So we decided to fly down to an altitude of 100ft , check the tail wind and at that point our indication was 18Kts. So the go around was neccessary. Tower was aware of the reason without notice and offered us landing on the opposite approach without delay. There was no windshear , just a steady wind that didn't smooth down close to the ground. One of my crew members saw this video and sent me the link. So thank you for putting this video on You Tube. After more than 30 years of flying for LH and performing a considerable number of go arounds, it is the first time that i got the chance to see this procedure from this point of view.

Hi Gebe 59 - I can't thank you enough for watching and responding, I am so honored, especially for providing all the details regarding the approach and decision to go around. I greatly appreciate it - as I am sure do the other people who have watched and commented. Great information. Huge thank you!!! If you regularly fly this route, you know I frequently have my camera trained your way, I love Lufty - and the beautiful 747. A million thanks! :) Jen

Not all go arounds are this much "fun". Back in the mid-1970s I was stationed in Hawaii. My assignment as Staff Liaison Officer to DARPA necessitated numerous trips the the mainland and beyond. In the pre-deregulation days, the air;lies didn't compete over price -- the couldn't -- so they did it with service. I preferred United, so I got quite familiar with their onboard audio programs. There was one channel that carried the radio traffic between the ground and the plane. It was a lot more interesting than the Don Ho channel so I liked to listen as we approached SFO. I'd experienced one previous go around there and quickly understood why the airlines, pilots, crew and PAX disliked them, especially at SFO. Coming in from the Pacific, everybody makes a left turn near the southern end of San Francisco and joins a long queue as they approach SFO. The normal approach is to one of the pair of runways where the Asiana Flight didn't make it last year. If you have a missed approach you have to climb out over the bay, head out west over the Pacific, turn left and head south to re-join the queue. It's both time and fuel consuming. On one particular flight we were on final for the left of the two runways -- I can't remember what the number is so I'll call it 24 Left -- one mile out. Here's the dialogue: Tower: "TWA 330, you're cleared to cross 24 Left ... Proceed to 24 Right and take off …" TWA 330 (angrily): "I'll be damned if I'll cross … United 189 Heavy's on final on 24 left!!" Tower (excitedly): "United 189 Heavy, can you make 24 Right?" United 189 Heavy:" I'll try ..." With that the Captain did something with the 747 that I couldn't believe. He made snap turn to right and a snap turn back to the left and we touched down on 24 Right. We rolled out and then the Captain came on again (furiously): "Tower, you stay right where you are, mister. I'm comin' to see you right after I get this thing parked!!" I suspect that I was one of very few people who'd listened to this exchange. Priceless…

The go-around was most certainly caused by the 210/11G14 tailwind. What I wonder about is why he lined up on that runway in the first place. Maybe the wind changed direction during the approach.

Thanks Russell and good question. Maybe the wind did change. This was the last to "attempt" to land before they changed they runway.

I am a CFII and have been flying for 40 years. I have seen and executed untold numbers of go-arounds. They are not dangerous and should be used anytime you don't feel comfortable with the approach. You should always keep a go-around in mind as you land, just in case things don't go right. When I fly with a crew, I always brief the go-around or missed approach procedure at the beginning of the approach.

For some reason I could not respond to Iflytoo, but thank you, great info and I have a question to my aviation friends and experts. Is it always at the pilots discretion to land (or not) once cleared by ATC no matter what the conditions - even if the wind or other conditions may be outside the normal safety recommendation for that aircraft?
@JaxAviator10 жыл бұрын
It is always the pilots discretion. My ATC professor was telling us a story in class about how he told a pilot to go around at Pax River, MD. The pilot respond that he was committed to landing and there was nothing my professor could do.
@tomdick69310 жыл бұрын
yeah his data is inaccurate.
@Avilator18910 жыл бұрын
Think about it this way: It's a landing clearance, not a landing instruction.

The Captain is in command of the ship. His descretion as to the safety of passengers and crew is the prime mover in any decisions he makes. My opinion!
@SkyhawkFlyer10 жыл бұрын
Safety of flight comes first, every time: § 91.3 Responsibility and authority of the pilot in command. (a) The pilot in command of an aircraft is directly responsible for, and is the final authority as to, the operation of that aircraft. (b) In an in-flight emergency requiring immediate action, the pilot in command may deviate from any rule of this part to the extent required to meet that emergency. (c) Each pilot in command who deviates from a rule under paragraph (b) of this section shall, upon the request of the Administrator, send a written report of that deviation to the Administrator. There would be a similar rule under ICAO which would also be adopted by most foreign carriers.
@AaronShenghao10 жыл бұрын
The problem was wind was 210 and they are landing 4R (heading 040 which makes then come from 220) which means they have almost with a tail wing instead of head wind. the pilots notice the problem and asked the wind check. Obviously they think they come in too fast and went around.
@fishwithfredo10 жыл бұрын
Yep. And as noted in another comment, check out the windsock.
@daerico365410 жыл бұрын
you can even see the windsock, pretty good tailwind
@AaronShenghao10 жыл бұрын
Eric Wilkins I am emphasizing some how ATC and tower still lined them up when the wind direction is completely wrong. That is a "heavy", those airliners can't land in tailwind. And from the windsock I established they had a tailwind at least 10knots
@RobertMChambers10 жыл бұрын
Standard windsocks will "straighten out" at 15 knots. If you see a windsock straight out you know the wind speed is AT LEAST 15 knots.
@daerico365410 жыл бұрын
At least,and I agree, cant figure why they were lined up that way. Flight crew made a prudent decision on the go around

My initial thought on why the go around happened was windsheer also... either way, a safety call was made and that's the important part....good call by the pilot! It would be interesting to find out the full details.
@jenf77710 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I love to know the details Rob! But, as you say, these pilots are amazing, the skill and precision is inspiring. I love watching the take-offs and observing how very differently each pilot will proceed - with the exact same aircraft. I have wondered if it is the younger pilots who take off kind of "low and slow" (more cautious) and the experienced pilots with more confidence who hot shot it down the runway and crank it up like a rocket!!! :)
@busbettis110 жыл бұрын
Really great video. I do have a general question, if a plane, especially one as large as a 747, is so close to landing with flaps down how can it then change so quickly into complete takeoff mode? It seems to me that the decision to abort landing would have to occur much sooner. I'm just looking for a general, conceptual answer not really a technical one.
@Tom1051510 жыл бұрын
Attempting to land with an 11 kt tailwind, plus the earliest he could have touched down left more than 3,000 ft of runway behind him and less than 7,000 in front of him looks like a pretty good go around to me. Notice he landed on RWY 22L not 04R as previously cleared.
@gerardmoran95602 жыл бұрын
gebe 59 nailed it. Every airplane I've flown, be it a fighter or transport, the max tailwind for landing is 10 kts. They called 220 at 11G14 or close to that. Perhaps they continued hoping for a decrease in the tailwind but it never happened. The go-around was the right call.

A go around isn't really a big deal as a passenger, I've experienced quite a few on 747s, 737s, Embrear RJs and A320s and quite close to the ground too. It's just a bit of a lurch from a landing type "drift" in to a takeoff like performance in a matter of a few seconds. Given we're talking jets there is of course some lag as they spool up. No big deal for anyone who has ever flown, but didn't stop some maroon from screaming when we went around at LHR when about 5 seconds from touch down.

Being a commercial pilot (N662TC), it is always at the discretion of the pilot to accept ATC's advised runway for landing. As with a slight tail wind in this case (look at the windsock) the pilot could have rejected the proposed runway and ask for a runway with a headwind.

As a pilot (small planes) we practice go - around as it is an essential safety move. If you have an unstable approach which will end up with a questionable landing outcome the best plan is to go - around and try it again.

Every turbo jet aircraft has a limitation on the tail wind component allowed, and I've never seen it more than 10 knots, it's industry standard. With the gust component it would have been a 14 knot tailwind. Yes he could have landed but if anything had gone badly, he'd have some explaining to do on why he attempted to land exceeding the tailwind limitation.

I had the displeasure of experiencing two aborted landings several years ago (on the same flight) when flying into KSAN/09 during a really odd tropical storm. Pucker factor extremely high!!

Look at the wind sock!! They are landing in the wrong direction. They are landing with the wind, mabe i'm wrong, but shouldn't aircraft be landing into the wind??

Reminds me of a landing in the 70s at LAX on AA whereby it appeared as though we were almost on the ground when kthe pilot suddenly took the plane back up, over the ocean and came around again in what seemed like a NY minute. There was a small aircraft on the runway which he only told us about once we were safely up in the air again. I don't want a repeat that too often!!

Wind 210 G14. A general rule says you should not have more than a 10 knot tailwind. For one thing, it "eats" up runway. In the video, you can clearly see the windsock indicating a pretty good tailwind. You can also see the 3000' marker around the place where they "take it around". The ideal touchdown zone is 1500' from the approach end and this ship is clearly beyond that. Yes, he could have pranged it on at the 3000' point, but it then would have required HARD braking to stop. Many pilots has tried these long touchdown points and been successful, but a number have ended up off the end of the runway, damaging or destroying a ship. Wise move to just take it around. Boston Approach should have put this plane on runway 22 in the first place.

Look at the windsock! Could have something to do with the massive tailwind.

What does "heavy" mean? Is that what he is saying? 420 heavy?
@Leo1084201310 жыл бұрын
"Heavy" indicates the aircraft's weight is 225,000 Lbs. or heavier.
