It's very comforting (and interesting) to see the $20-$17 wines hold their own and even beat the more expensive wines. This is good. It makes wine a lot more approachable.

I've enjoyed the Jadot Bourgogne Rouge many times, and I've had the Faiveley Bourgogne Rouge as well. I totally agree with your responses to both -- great value for very good wine! The only other Faiveley I've had is the 2018 Mercurey La Framboisière, which I think was $80. That one didn't seem overpriced to me, but Faiveley has so many that I see how this can be a problem sometimes. Thanks for this great session...!

I so often wonder how the return process works for corked wines. Especially ones that cost a lot of money. As Peter said they will probably give you a hard time, and I would imagine they might want to taste it themselves to make sure it really is corked, and while that shouldn't be subjective, I would imagine people selling wines worth a lot of money might be inclined to act like they're not corked when they are. It must be an awkward exchange that I'm glad I have never had to have... but also...strangely it's unfortunate that I've never had to have that experience because I don't get to regularly buy and taste a bunch of expensive bottles of wine lol. Come to think of it I'd gladly trade those few-and-far-between moments of awkwardness for a lifetime of buying and tasting great wines 😫

For just extra $10 you could get a 2019 Faiveley Mercurey Vieilles Vignes, which in my opinion a much better wine and at least you know where the grapes come from. When bottle says "Bourgogne, those grapes could have been sourced from anywhere in that region, but for the one I mentioned, you know exactly where they were harvested and it's just a much better showing, even though aroma was very good for the one you suggested, but finish was lacking. Thanks.

Le Moine is négoce renowned for only producing ~100 barrels per year solely from 1er and Grand Crus. The Bourgogne white/red (the fruit source(s) is never disclosed) have always been a bit of a mystery to me and have often been disappointing. The higher level Crus are often spectacular and remain relatively decent value for money vs other domaine bottlings. They get vastly superior with age as well.

Jay, there's a red wine in a very heavy bottle that I think is excellent value. It's related, in a way, to a much cheaper wine that you reviewed positively. Interesting that in a lot of your tastings some of the high priced wines are not worth it to you both or just simply flawed. It seems to show that there's a gamble in spending a lot! It would be interesting to do a follow-up to the Bordeaux tasting with all value picks (without telling Peter, or tricking him) to see what he thinks. It's also a bummer that I search for a lot of the wines you taste and they are not available in my market in Canada!
