Probably because it is really not an easy thing to be a bright light. His family, he loves and cherishes.. yet they are constantly inquiring about his monetary value. That's painful, even though that is no one's intention. He's just bright. Especially for his upbringing.

As someone who lives in a diferent continent than my entire family, I understand what Damon is saying. When you see your family so little (in my case: every 3 to 4 years) you become more aware of the sense of death, the idea of losing some love one. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, you are just aware and that can be percieve as melancholic, maybe.

Your Indiana videos are (maybe ironically) what wakes me up to the realization of what most keeps my devotion to your channel comes from-your ability to keep humility and levelness. I also spent a big portion of my life in the midwest and while you seem to have a vague familiar boredom, you don’t have the blasé energy most would. You can showcase life in a way that feels very honest AND in a way that doesn’t carry shame from where you’re from which is so rare in people from many parts of the US. (Understandably, let’s be real.) ANYWAY, THANKS FOR EXISTING. 💌✨

I feel like people are uncomfortable when talking about death because how we die is more gruesome than actually dying. As you said, everybody is going to die, it's inevitable, but how we die and how we lose people is terrifying cause we don't know and never will know exactly what's going to happen. The things that happen to people that make them die and not being able to figure out why it's happened or a way to make it not happen is one of the most gruesome parts of life.

As somone who just moved to Milan for graduate school, I have a lot of guilt about moving away from my family in the US. I am an only child and an only grandchild in the state and my grandmother (my only surviving biological grandparent) begged me not to move to Italy. I think subconsciously she thinks she is going to pass while I am over here, so I have a lot of guilt for that but as you said Damon, we will all die someday. I'm just glad someone else brought this up and I think it is a part of ex-pat life that is not talked about so much.

It''s always intriguing how when you're lifestyle becomes so unique from the one you came from you still have to go back and exist where it all started again. But when you go back everything feels so familiar yet slightly alien, and meanwhile the people back there sometimes can be curious, maybe negative at times or trying to accept what your world is like without ever experiencing it. All of this came to mind when hearing how often $$ came up in Damon's family's conversations with him and learning about his work or how he does what he does for a living.

That part about death hit me really hard. I was moved away when my grandma was really succumbing to her cancer and it was getting towards the end. I moved back home pretty quickly to see my grandma again before she died and help my mom with things. I had moved back in with my mom for only a few weeks and then she passed away. I think I sometimes forget how much it traumatized me about living away from family. I want to move away again to explore and see the world but now I have an intense fear of not being there for my mom and thinking if something happens to her while I’m away. I know everyone dies eventually, even me, but that part about coming home and one of your family members not being there anymore really hit home.

Actually in South Africa we talk very openly about death and mortality ..to a degree that it almost becomes feeble(is that the word?). Most foreigners say we are very direct people and I guess that's true, but I think also it's just because we are incredibly strong. The women here are tanks! We discuss our funerals like it's our next birthday party y'all! I've already known what my mother wants at hers since the age of like 9 or something! Right down to the tapestry covering her casket 😅 yellow daisies on a navy background. I have no idea how other countries approach the topic but we do it with humor through and through! I remember in grade 9, our teacher was just like "So how would y'all like to be buried?" And it wasn't even strange one bit, and I was just like "Throw me on a little boat in the sea and make me shark bait thank you! I just hope I don't get sea sick!" Like at 15 years old? I think back on how I've thought of death and it's quite amusing now at 21. At 19 I was held hostage in my home on our farm at gun point while they were robbing us I was gung-ho ready to take that bullet for my family! And the next day we just went about our business, yes shook up but still doing our job and hosting the function that was planned a whole month ago cause the show must go on and South Africans don't mess around 😅 Okay I've been rambling but honestly this is such a discussed topic here and I'd love to know the rest of the world's opinions cause these here people ain't afraid of anything!

My great grandma lived to be 101 and was in good mental health until the last 4 months. She kind of gave up. But what we all realized was that everyone besides her son were gone. Her husband had died decades earlier, her brother and sister are both gone. All her friends. I can’t imagine how that would feel. Not to mentioned she was born in 1904. She lived through wars, the Great Depression.

Omg Damon I'm a little late in watching this video but had to comment. I have been living outside of the US, away from my small Midwestern hometown, as well for about 10 years now and every time I go home I think about the fact that one of these trips will likely be the last time I see some of my loved ones. It sucks, but what you said afterwards (that we will all eventually die and we know it) is so true too. I'm currently living in Mexico and the Mexican perspective on death is so refreshing. They embrace it and don't shy away from talking about it. If you've never spent Día de los Muertos around here I highly encourage you to put it on your list. :) Would love to show you around if you find yourself in Mexico someday. Cuídate!

Caitlin Doughty from Ask a Mortician had a really great TED talk about institucionization of death, especially in the West. It basically talked about how we don't have to deal with death and illness closely/directly (cause there are services that take care of it for us, instead of say cultures which practice home burials) that we end up being alienated from that part of life. We know it exists but we don't want to look at it because that's hard. I think it goes for a lot of things society deems "ugly" - homelessness, disability, just any people in need really. We close our eyes on front of it, even though they are completely natural occurences, a part of life.

This was so good! The production value on what other people could have used as a “throw away” was just incredible. The music and transitions were 10/10.

Beautiful! So much to relate to, on many levels. It is especially warming to listen to your deeper questions on life and death, interspersed amongst the sweet, seemingly more superficial (but, actually, equally as deep), interactions with those you love. Bravo….you are a master, (well…pretty much, lol)! Thank you! ✨

I just lost my Dad very suddenly two weeks ago, so your talk about death feels very timely. It's been on my mind a lot.
