Kim, thanks a lot for this wonderful video. Could you tell me if go boxing or go basketball playing is correctly used?
@Englishwithkim4 жыл бұрын
Glad it helped! We wouldn't say "go basketball playing" because that verb requires an object. You cay simply say, "She plays basketball." For some reason, "go boxing" sounds weird to me, but "go kickboxing" doesn't (probably because it's more of a class you would take at the gym). If talking about boxing, I would probably say "He's taking boxing classes" or "He's into boxing" or "He's a boxer." I think "go boxing" is technically fine and some people may use it. Since it sounds a little strange to me, I personally wouldn't say it. This is one of those things to listen for when interacting with serious boxers!

Hello Kim! Very nice to meet you here! =) I have a question: Is it ok to say HE IS GOING FISHING AT THIS MOMENT? Or HE IS GOING SKATEBOARDING NOW?... I want to use GO + SOME SPORTS, and FISHING and SKATEBOARDING make me get confused. Thanks in advande for any help you may provide. Greetings!
@Englishwithkim3 жыл бұрын
That's a great question, and I appreciate you getting me to think about this differently. The simplest way to describe an action at the present moment is to use the present continuous ("He's fishing at the moment" or "He's skateboarding with his friends"). That said, there are other natural-sounding ways to describe what's happening right now. You could use the present perfect to explain that he's left for that activity: "He's gone fishing" or "He's gone skateboarding with his friends." Or you could use another structure to explain where he is at the present moment: "He's out fishing and will be back in a couple of hours" or "He's out skateboarding right now."
@mericalatayud38923 жыл бұрын
@@Englishwithkim First of all, thanks a lot for your prompt response 🙏🏾💐 I appreciate it a lot. So, I can see that it is not possible to say HE IS GOING SKATEBOARDING/FISHING. I agree with you on that, that is better to say HE IS FISHING/ SKATEBOARDING…
@Englishwithkim3 жыл бұрын
In this case, the present continuous is super common when we're discussing plans happening in the near future: "He's going skateboarding after school" or "He's going fishing this weekend."

Many Thanks for explanation. What about "WORKOUT", can i say: I go for a workout 3 times a week or i should say: I DO workout? And one more question, "I'm going sailing" Does it mean that I am sailing right now? Is it Present Continuous? Thank you in advance!
@Englishwithkim4 жыл бұрын
If you're talking about the action of working out, I would use the verb form instead. For example, "I work out three times a week." We tend to use the noun form of workout with descriptive language: "I did a very interesting workout on KZbin this morning." The present continuous is often used with a future meaning. We use it when talking about future plans that have already been arranged or planned, such as weekend plans or vacation plans. I explain this more over on my website: englishwithkim.com/present-future-meaning-plans-schedules/

Hey Kim, What about " I go to shop", is it correct to say or any other verbs that you used? thank you
@Englishwithkim5 жыл бұрын
We don't usually use "shop" in that way - it's much more natural to say "go shopping." Although you can use the present tense of "go" to describe routine activities, it's more common to use it to talk about where you're going regularly. For example, "I go to the gym every day" or "I go to Toronto for work regularly." It really depends on context!

Great! Can I say: go bike riding, go card playing or guitar playing?
@Englishwithkim3 жыл бұрын
You can say "go bike riding" because you're describing the physical act of cycling, similar to "horseback riding". You can think of the first word as specifically describing the action. We don't use this structure with the verb "play," so the other two don't work. Try searching for the phrase inside "quotation marks" on Google - you'll be able to see that people are commonly using "go bike riding" in writing, whereas the results for "go card playing" only show examples where the words happened to be next to each other.

You can say "I am going to play chess" or "I am playing chess." When we use the future forms, we usually have some sort of time reference, either in the context of the conversation or in the sentence. For example: "I'm playing chess with my sister tomorrow" or "I'm going to play chess next weekend." Hi What is the difference between Tone and pitch ??
@Englishwithkim5 жыл бұрын
I explain what we mean by "tone" in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iX6sXqaFgsiijbM and this one may also help clarify how we use pitch in American English: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ip-wd31mnL-drpo When people talk about "tone" in English, they're usually referring to "tone of voice," or your intonation. Pitch is the highness or lowness of your voice. We use rises and falls in pitch to stress syllables and words and communicate additional meaning. However, unlike in tonal languages, meaning doesn't change based on the way we enter or exit a word/syllable. Instead, we listen for pitch rises and falls throughout the entire sentence.

Every actor in the Irish man was saying " he don't listen to me instead of does". and earlier today I saw someone said " He needn't to struggle instead of doesn't", why is that?
@Englishwithkim5 жыл бұрын
Which movie were you watching? Even though "don't" is grammatically incorrect, you will hear people say it. If an actor is saying it, they're trying to illustrate something about the character, such as his education level, social class, and so on. Sometimes we speak with incorrect grammar among friends or family, to be funny, to sound more casual, or to make a point. Again, it depends on context. "Needn't" is not common in American English, but it is used in other English speaking countries. We would say "He doesn't have to struggle" instead.

This use of the verb "run" doesn't work, as it's followed by an object. You can talk about the physical activity with this structure: I like to go running. When talking about managing or being in charge of something, you use the base form of "run": I like to run my restaurant.

Sometimes people say Go+Bare Verb: Go find Tom ... Go help him out ... Hard to tell if that's grammatically correct.
@Englishwithkim5 жыл бұрын
I was hoping someone would ask about that! Yes, we do often say go + the bare infinitive of the verb. My initial thought is that this is a shortened version of "go and do something": "go and find Tom" or "go and help him out." With my example in the video, we do say "I'm going to go practice piano," but I think this is just a shorter version of "I'm going to go and practice piano." I'll have to do some more research to be sure!
