As a newcomer, I needed this after trying to figure out this very situation in Ireland vs France in the opening match of Six Nation. The ball was held up on an Ireland try attempt and France was awarded the drop kick.

Can you take a drop goal straight from a catch from a goal line drop out? I was told it has to be passed first

Helpful summary - thanks Barnsey. But it strikes me that they may have been better dealing with the issues that lead to repeated scrum resets eating up gametime rather than this work round which might (we'll see) encourage more expansive attacking play but clearly advantages the defending side.

WB, I am a relative new ref. I have been giving some thought as to where I should position myself for a goal line dropout. What's the guidance from the top refs? After a little thinking about this play my initial thought is that the best thing to do after the goal line kick is awarded is for the ref to sprint to somewhere close to the 22 in the middle of the field. I have watched a lot of games and clips recently, and I see a lot of drop goal attempts. I think you would have to be close to the middle of the field to judge many drop goals. From this vantage point (maybe 18-20 metres out for high school, on the 22 for college, 22-25 meters out for higher levels), I think you could judge whether the receiving team had retreated to the 5, and that you would be able to get to any part of the field if it's a short kick. No one really knows how all the new laws will play out, or even if they will become permanent. That said, I see one early result of good kickers receiving the kick with time and space to launch a bunch of droppies. Any thoughts?

Thanks Barnesy- I'm concerned about the timewasting potential of this move: can a team in the last few minutes winning by less than a score not (after holding the ball up) deliberately kick it out on the full, and then stall the scrums and resets as before to kill time? Is there anything refs can do to stop this

so all we see now is chips and grubbers, and if you fuck it up all that happens is you get the ball back? Same with drop kicks, if the ball goes dead you can have another go?? This seems way to open to abuse. How you just make drop goals worth more, but if you f it up its a 22. Seems like a flyhalfs wet dream. I would like to see more attempts at drop goals from a greater variety of players.
