Welcome to the Urban Survivor channel and in this video we’re going to be taking a look at the Goal Zero Crush Light which is a usb rechargeable and solar charging collapsible lantern that has a max output of 60 lumens, a runtime of 35 hours, it weighs just over 3 ounces and you can pick it up for right around $20. This lantern is great for the outdoors and you can even attach it to your backpack and pick up a bit of charge on the go. Allright so this is the Goal Zero Crush Light which is currently in it’s fully collapsed position. Here it is next to a $10 bill so you can get an idea for it’s size. As you can see there’s a small solar panel and according to goal zero it takes about 20 hours of sunlight to charge and on top and next to that there’s a plastic loop which you can use to hang the lantern. No I’m going to open the lantern up by pulling it apart and on one side you can see there’s a small green cover which houses the micro usb charging port and it takes about 2.5 hours to charge via usb and on the other side there’s a small button which you can use to turn the lantern on and off and cycle through the different modes. If we turn it over we can see that there are 5 different LEDs which produce a warm white 3000k light.
To turn the light you just need to click the button and you can keep clicking it to cycle through the different modes. On the high 60 lumen mode it can run for 3 hours and on it’s lowest setting it can run for about 35 hours and this is a shot outside on my patio comparing the 3 different brightness modes.
This is a shot inside of a small 3 person tent so you can get an idea of how it might look it you brought the Goal Zero Crush Light camping or backpacking.
In this shot the Goal Zero crush is inside of a room so you can get an idea of what it might look like if you needed to use the lantern if your power went out at home.
Overall this is a nice little lantern to take backpacking or camping and it would be useful as a backup light source to a headlamp or a flashlight. It’s nice that it can pick up a bit of charge from the sun and the warm white light is very comfortable and easy on the eyes. It’s reasonably priced and the user interface is nice and simple.

Bought one of these a couple years ago. After having it in the sun many times over those two years, I'd like to report that the clear, crushable plastic of the lantern becomes "sticky" and seems to have degraded to a point where it is covered in an almost honey-like glue. Recommend if you buy, don't use it except for emergencies unless you want to handle it with gloves and don't mind glue getting everywhere.

Is there an indicator letting you know its charging on solar? I have one and I'm trying to figure out if the solar charge is actually working. As far as I can tell, the indicator light only comes on when I plug it in USB, not in the sun. My next experiment will be to run it dead, let it sit outside all day in direct sun and see if I get more than a minute or two of runtime.

Yes, I have the same question. There is no indication when the crush light is charging on solar. I also only saw a red light when I charge with USB. The only thing that is mentioned in the online manual is as follows "Know it’s charging with the LED indicator light next to the charging port turns red", but I think this refers to USB charging not Solar charging.

20 hours to charge by sun is too long. Should be half that. Who gets twenty hours of sunlight during the day? Iceland.

Mostly agree, but logically if you wanted to cut charge time in half, it would require double the size solar panel. For my purpose, I like the portability. I don't intend to run mine completely dead overnight either - maybe an hour or two, so the solar is a nice unattended way to help "top it off."
