Goal Zero Yeti 3000x Buyer's Review

I'm John, the host of AcePrepper. This video is a comprehensive and practical review of the Goal Zero Yeti 3000x. I compare it to previous models. Thanks so much for all of your tips and insights. Super helpful for real novices. Finally broke down and bought the 3000X for the mountains where there is no cell service and we have planned power outages during heat waves and "wind events." Anyway - tip for those who may be looking at these in the bay area: if you purchase a lifelong membership to Sports Basement for $25, you get 10% off ALL purchases forever. So...I paid the $25, then bought the 3000X at the 10% discount. PS - I found out they had one (and apparently only one, since they no longer show this model on their website) in stock via the Goal Zero website using the "Find it Locally" bar. Just zoom that sucker out and see how far you're willing to drive to pick yours up :-) And now, because of your tip in part 2, I'll be plugging my refrigerator and modem into it when I'm not there, with the 3000X plugged into the wall so that I won't lose food or the ability to see how much power I have left in the Yeti.

Thanks for the great tip! It's worth it to do some internet research, or creative research like you did, to save 10-15% off of such a big ticket item. A while back I went to backcountry.com and used their 15% off first time purchase to get the discount off of a GZ Boulder 200 Briefcase solar panel. I couldn't get it to work over the internet, so I called them and they applied it to the purchase. Thanks for your tip. Stay safe out there in Cali! Because our home has life support equipment, and our local renewable power company MCE through PG&E, sent me a 3000X at no cost. All it took was filling an application. I've got much to learn about solar panels for it.

Hi. I was wondering if you had a chance to use or test your yeti yet? Got the same one but I haven't tried to use it yet. Another user here said after the first use, it would no longer charge back up, with either solar or wall outlet. Yikes!

I have a jackery 160 watt unit, and I’ve had it for about a year now, and it’s been working fine. All I gotta say is for all of these lithium ion power stations, you need to charge it to 100% and then discharge to about 30 percent. That’s what Jackery recommends at least

I have the yeti 3000, purchased in May 2019. Love it. My Dometic cfx50w consumes only 6 watts at rest, and 60 watts when the motor is running. My hotplate, like yours, uses about 1200 watts. I live out of my Prius. The Prius charges my yeti, and my yeti runs everything I need power for. The 5 setting is what works in my Prius. The 10 setting always ends up burning the fuse of the cigarette lighter plug. I got rid of the cart. It consumed too much space, and made it heavier than it already is. I would never want something as heavy as the yeti 6000!

I bought my 3000x from Costco, It came with a nomad 200 solar panel. The only down side to the goal zero is there cables are $$$$, but they are also high quality. The x series is WiFi connection, & you are able to set the battery charge parameters. Love mine and have only needed to use solar to keep topped off. The 3000x will accept up to 600 watt charging.

Great video. The 1400 can charge a lot faster if you use the adaptor from the 3000 or pick up their new fast charger. Can handle up to 320 watts of input. The included 60w adaptors are seriously underpowered. Before they came out with the fast charger, I just ganged up 4x 60w adaptors and combined them to the App input (Anderson) for 240w of charging on my 1000.

To help with your eye contact, flip the viewfinder so you can't see it- you'll be more inclined to look into the lens. It's nothing big, but at the beginning, (and sometimes throughout) you look at the viewfinder instead of the camera lens, and it looks a little funky. Good day!

I received my Goal Zero Yeti 1500x two days ago. Both USB v1 ports are defective. Over this port neither an iPhone nor an Android can be loaded. I have also tried other cables. If I wiggle the cable or twist it slightly, a temporary connection to the Powerstation is established. The electrical USB connector on the Goal Zero Yeti X-series seems to be manufactured outside the tolerances and is obviously a cheap Chinese component. I also wonder, does Goal Zero have a production control and quality control? My question, does the USB v1 socket work on your new Goal Zero X-Series?

I'm thinking about purchasing the 3000X. May I use a bunch of extension cords to plug in my 2 fridges on separate floors as well as a huge freezer in the basement at the same time using a power bar? As long as I don't go over 3000 watts at one time? What happens if I do accidentally go over 3000 watts? Thanks!

Thanks for the question. I have not tried the new App yet. I've used the old app on my Yeti 1400, and was impressed that I can use it remotely as long as the unit is connected to wifi. This is helpful if I'm on vacation and I have my fridges plugged into the Yeti as a backup power system. I eventually ended up turning off the wifi and not using the old App because I found that it causes the Yeti battery to drain faster (not by much though) when in storage. I'll try the new App this week and let you know how it goes. John at AcePrepper.

For $3200 you could build a really nice built in system with 1500 or so watts of solar power, a much higher capacity battery bank, solar controller and inverter and transfer switchs to power the house in an emergency. I am a huge fan of my older goal zero AMG , but the prices are ridiculously expensive. Also it looked to be pretty good sunlight for only 20% of the panels power being produced. I'm afraid GZ is going to go out of business with the competition coming in at 50% less with more features and capacity. Thanks for sharing none the less but I'd take a honda 2200i with bluetooth for $1100 over this any day of the week for emergency use and prepping. For home use, it's uber expensive. These aren't really generators either when $3200 just gets you started and as much as $5500 for unit and a measly 600W of portable panels.

@@daisyv5038 if that's the case and it were me, I'd get a Jackery 400. Looks like harbor freight is carrying them now at $50 off. You might also look into goal zero tho since they make some cool camping lights and other accessories that might make that system fit your needs better. Goal can be found at Costco during a road show they do every year. The price is as low as you'll find and Costco doubles the warranty. Good luck, either way.

Very nice review! I bough a 1500X last week an have a question, whether your Yeti 3000X can charge in low light conditions, when solar power is between 2- 20W? Mine starts to charge when power reach about 30W and up. I try to establish that this is normal (are in others units is the same bug) or I have an MPPT regulator issue. It will be very helpfull if you can check it. Thank you

Hi. Did you ever get any additional info on this or have you resolved this by now? I would like to know about your experience on low light charging. May I ask what part of the world you're in? I wonder how the yetis perform year round, much less in winter in the pacific northwest region of the United States. Like, is this just a summer power source??? It better not be for the price! 😉

@@daisyv5038 I returned it to shop and buy Ecoflow delta. All three units that I've tested was the same problem. I have a suspected that the problem is with the wrong developed mppt charge controller. When I mount to the 1500x external mppt (from previevs yeti generation Yeti 1400) it work perfect, charge from 1W like should.

Not a bad video but you didn't get into as much detail as I would hope. Such as: how many devices can you plug into this generator at 1 time? You said it will run an hour refrigerator for about 60 hours but did you actually test that For real world results? How long does it take to charge When plugged into the wall? How long does it take to charge using the solar panels?

I have a 3000, no x. Bought it from Goal Zero during their 2019 Memorial Day sale. Unit cost $2300, normally about $3100. Should've waited and gotten the 6000x for your primary home backup which would or should be stationary so you don't have to worry about moving it. The 3000x is your all arounder while your 1400 is the most portable.

Hi John, have a 1400 for camping etc. looking for a model for my home, with a home converter kit. Was looking at the 6000X but wondering if the 3000 wouldn’t do. We get one to two snow storms a year and don’t always loose power. The worst was in 2009 and power was out for two days. Any thoughts? Thanks

Thanks for the question. In the video it was pulling in 40 watts per hour from one boulder 200 briefcase solar panel. At that rate it would take 75 hours of good sunlight (not including nighttime) to fully charge it if it was fully depleted. But that was just a snapshot taken at 3pm in the summer months. After the video I repositioned the solar panel and was able to pull in 90 watts per hour. I've tested these solar boulder 200's at different times of the day, and have found it best to use from 7am until around 3pm. I have gotten up to 180 watts per hour input at 7am before. So if you have good sunlight, and put out one boulder 200 solar panel out the whole day, my guess would be that it would take around 20 hours of sunlight to fully charge. That's why I recommend more than one solar panel. I have a 1,000 watts worth of solar panels so that I can charge the 3,000x, best case scenario, in 3-5 hours. I plan to do another video testing Goal Zero solar panels in the rain, and on a cloudy day. Hope this helps. Best of luck. John at AcePrepper.

AcePrepper -Then maybe you may need 700W solar panel to charge the Yeti 3000X but then it defeats it’s portability with that much solar panels. I think I would stick to around 1000-1200Wh Solar battery so it can be fully charged in a day when traveling (Overlanding) is your thing.

@@norkisserrano These units are more so as a house back up power. They can be moved, But their main goal is flexibility. Yes you can still haul it, truck or SUV+. But your gonna be expecting to haul heavy. Yes if you want more portable and easier to charge with a lighter package, Smaller is good. But you're not gonna power something like a home with it as these are intended as. But the main greatness and goal of these is also passthrough charging. Which means when their connected to power, IE Solar, hydro, Home, wind,etc and you're not pulling more then what is coming into the unit. All power is passed through the unit and into your device and regulated correctly like a beefed up UPS. So once it's charged you won't have it keep charging/dipping the battery all the time and IE some people think damaging or so forth. So say if you have a small workshop (office computer,etc. Laptop wise). and you're afraid of brownouts/power failure happening all the time. You can leave the unit plugged in the wall, and power devices OFF the unit. When power does go out, or dips. No effect happens to your devices. (like i said basically a beefed up UPS but better.).

Hi Marianne. Did you ever find answers to your questions? I've been trying to learn the same. So far, I've found good explanations and demos on CheapRvLiving channel, in his solar generator playlist. He talks in layman terms for the technically challenged like me! In a recent video, he says the panels are not supposed to get wet at all. He even cautioned about setting them on the ground if there's boy dogs around! They'll be ruined. Yikes!

From the several videos here on this, yes. You can do both at the same time. The best explanation I've found so far is on the CheapRvLiving channel, go to his Playlists, and browse through his solar generator videos. He demonstrates the way to connect, how to use it, etc., but for for vehicle dwellers. However the info applies universally.

Overall very good review. I have a couple of 1000 Lithium models and Yeti Tank Expansion Batteries. I don't think you can connect the 3000x to the Lead Acid Expansion Batteries, but as you you mentioned GZ is working on a plan to allow for expansion batteries with the new "X" models. While I've needed to rely on my GZ for several power outages, they are usually resolved in 8-9 hours, so I haven't needed to connect the expansion batteries, though I did hook everything up yesterday to recharge. We're having a pretty good storm today, so in anticipation of possibly losing power, I'm powering my entertainment system (TV, Cable box, WiFi router, Sound Bar) to exercise the battery (Recommended procedure by GZ to drain the battery down to 50% every 4 months, then recharge.
