Excellent analysis. I’m about to make an iPad case and will be using goatskin as the interior with a cowhide exterior. The two hides will be contrasting colours and so was thinking about edge paint as the only option. I will now go through some of Philip’s video courses and see how I might be able to use a turned edge as a solution.

I have been searching all over looking for tips on dealing with lambskin leather as I find it impossible to skive and punch chisel holes for sewing as the whole are not easy to see to get the needle through the correct spot as the whole almost disappear even though I push the chisel completely through multiple times. Also find it very hard to cut as it stretches so easily while cutting. Is goatskin that much different from lambskin? And if so any advice on dealing with sheepskin?
@LeathercraftMasterclass
@LeathercraftMasterclass 4 ай бұрын
Yes, goatskin is much easier to work with as the skin is more dense and stretch resistant. Lambskin takes more skill to work with and it's delicate, but with a sharp enough blade, it should skive well. Try pressing the blade down harder as you skive forward, this compresses the skin making it easier to cut. Sheepskin is different and not as nice as lambskin. It's not that great to work with and is the cheapest skin for a reason.

@@LeathercraftMasterclass Thanks for the advice. I ordered some cowhide to work with. Probably shouldn’t have started with lambskin leather 🤣.

How effective do you think Goatskin would be for a leather jacket? Does it scuff/show marks as easily as Lambskin, and how water resistant is it, would it survive a spell of rain? Thanks.
@LeathercraftMasterclass
@LeathercraftMasterclass 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, chrome tanned goatskin would be more durable than lambskin.

Question I am looking to make a leather cuff bracelet. Exterior regular cowhide veg tan, interior goat skin. Would the top grain of the goat skin need to be finished with some form of water resistant product (resoline, atom wax)?? In order to resist sweat and dirt from direct skin contact? Sorry I am new to this, I know the unfinished natural cowhide veg tan needs to be finished with one of these products after dyeing, but what about the goat skin which will actually be in contact with my skin? The goat skin seems to be finished in some way already in your video. Thanks

@LeathercraftMasterclass Жыл бұрын
Hello Drew, I see you sent this via email also, so I will answer you here. I would not recommend finishing the lining if it is to go against your skin, you want a certain amount of breathability and the leather should be able to absorb sweat which will improve comfort. One of the best linings is a thin split of undyed veg-tan ironically. It will darken nicely over time. Just beware, some people have allergic reactions to chrome tanned leather against the skin (should you be using chrome).

Interesting video, thanks. I have been looking for veg-tanned coloured goatskins for sometime. AA Crack do a lovely natural russet but all the coloured I can find are either chrome tanned or buffed, removing that lovely grain texture which is what I am looking for.

@William Connock - Yes, Alran makes some really nice colored veg tan leather. A few other places are Siegel Leather, Pergamena, J. Hewits & Sons, Hatmatan, and Feinleder-Hoffman. Their main focus is the high-end bookbinding market, and experienced bookbinders only use veg tan. I'm pretty all of the goat skins sold by Talas are veg tan. Hope this helps.

Vegetable tanned goat is going to be slightly stiffer, but not as stiff as vegetable tanned calf or cow of the same thickness.

Hi, Philip. I really enjoy these short videos where you share these tricks and tips. Quick question, what would be a good thickness for goat skin or kidskin as a liner for a card wallet or laptop sleeve?
@LeathercraftMasterclass
@LeathercraftMasterclass 3 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear it mike. Thickness depends on a few different factors such as design, style, and size. Even in the same wallet I would vary the thickness of different parts. Prototyping will help you find what works.

Is there a big difference between goatskin and lambskin?
@LeathercraftMasterclass
@LeathercraftMasterclass 3 жыл бұрын
Goatskin tends to be more durable, has less stretch and a slightly more pronounced grain. Lambskin tends to be one of the softest skins available, has a smoother less obvious grain and is cheaper to buy. Choice should be based on the desired outcome for your project and the kind of use it will see.

Goat skin vs crazy horse what is tougher and strech resistant??
@LeathercraftMasterclass
@LeathercraftMasterclass Жыл бұрын
If they are of equal thickness then likely goatskin is the victor. However crazy horse leather comes from a cow which allows a much greater thickness than goatskin. So crazy horse at full thickness would be the victor.
