I've tested these in custom battles, and had a similar impression. They were very good at firing into combat to defeat SEMs and monstrous infantry. I haven't used it in campaign, but I have done campaigns with the now defunct goblin spear throwa mod and found them to be enormously useful - not for their performance (which isn't relevant anyway as they had different stats), but for the fact that having a cheap, low tier artillery piece readily available means that enemy armies without artillery of their own have to move to engage you, allowing you to chose more beneficial terrain to fight them on.

this is a very good point, sometimes the artillery is not useful only for the damage but also to be sure it will be your enemy attacking and not otherwise

that unit has literally no usaage in the game. Their performance is far inferior compare to other bolt throwers from other factions considering their shittty accuracy

yes I think they dislike ballistas in general and it is sad because a huge arrow should destroy entire row of knights
