Gotta say, wasn't expecting that result... dunno what it is about them, but, to me, Treemen have always seemed pretty 'mid' so far as SEMs go - guess ol' Treebeard here done proved me wrong!

They are mediocre. They hit hard but are slow AF. Much less utility around the battlefield and it's also an easy target. A forced 1v1 isn't representative of anything. The flying and fast monsters are much, much better in a normal context. Especially the Vargulf. The regen, speed and mass makes it a one man wrecking ball. It's not a duelist but if you had let it use all of its regen cap it would have won all of these matchups.

It is because how how slow they are, which is exactly what these duels do not punish. This is an ideal set-up for treemen.

The high melee defence and attack of the treemen is what sets them a cut above the rest here. As the battle progresses, the monsters designed to be infantry squashers with fairly low melee attack will just find it impossible to even hit the treeman.

I have nothing to base this on Just vibes I *FEEL* like the Frost Wyrm was made by just taking the Cathay Dragon or Coatl, stapling it to the ground, which means it is bringing flying melee jank to grounded combat, with the added layer of those particular models being extra janky.

Haven't watched yet, but gonna guess giant. They're insanely cost effective in melee to compensate for their vulnerability to missiles.

@@darthplagueis13 That wasn't a real stager, it was a linked animation. 2 where the giant "wins" the animation happen at 3:57. The headbut from the giant is also a linked animation. Winning the animation doesn't actually mean they win the damage roll off. You can see at 3:16 the treeman "wins" the animation but both take damage.

yeah fighting a giant with similarly large monsters often feels like bullying given how much they get literaly pushed around

The stegodom got to the semi finals due to their missile damage, weapon damage seems to have lower impact in duels than the devs expected, so the giant and others feel underwhelming

Their melee stats aren't that great, but the skinks throwing javelins don't care about that.

Agree For monster duels, animations are easily the most important feature. The giant, for example, by stats SHOULD do a lot better in these kinds of tests, but his animations are long, and his stagger resistance is nearly nonexistent. Just in the Giant vs Treeman fight here, had the giant been RNG manipulated to only do the headbutt, he would have probably won without taking more than one or two hits, but if he was RNG manipulated to do only the big swing, he would have lost without landing more than one or two hits. Pretty much the only broad exceptions to this are the monsters that actually have specialized dueling animations for eachother, where the fixed animation interactions kinda flatten those results.

yea well, put vampire or nercomancer behind and heal it, sure, but stegadon can have life-slann or oracle and treeman -> life spellsinger do exactly the same
