FYI. I was victim of bullying while in high school, then I joined the marching band and a few varsity sports (basketball, football, and soccer), after that, I was HOME FREE! My best friends were the school´s captain cheerleader and student council. I blew that horn to glory! Made 3 point baskets, scored TDs as a WR, and made goals without my hands. Amen

This band used to practice in their dress uniforms almost every morning during my boot camp and we had to stop working and stand at attention when they played the National Anthem and the Marine Hymn . The people change but the quality of this band is always great.

I get goosebumps whenever I hear a military marching band. They are so precise. I used to be in marching bands at school a long time ago. I always thought that being in a military band was a part time position. I recently learned that it can be a full-time career. You have to be a stellar musician, so there is always a catch.

That Parade Deck is a truly familiar sight with the arcade in the background. That Band was my outfit from June 1954 to December 1956 and that "grinder" cost me a number of shoe soles as we played Morning Colors five days a week and several parades each week. It was on the "grinder" all the time. One event remains with me clearly now occurred in October 1956 at Morning Colors: the Guard Company Color detail ran the Flag up upside down. I saw the blue field at the bottom before the Flag was run up but could say anything for being in formation. But Col. Henry Crowe (Jim) was standing some fifty yards down the street and he saw it. Guard Company immediately ran up another Flag. When we in the Band returned to the Band barracks several of us were called into Col. Crowe's office; I learned a number of new words. Those were the days. My oath of enlistment has no expiration date. Mike Rigsby, Sgt, USMC. 1450413/5544/0300

+Cory Branch - yes, these folks (the Division, Air Wing, Air-Ground Combat Center band members) are all boot-camp trained, combat-qualified Marines, and deploy overseas. Often they serve as security for HQ elements. Only the "President's Own" is composed of musicians who do not complete "boot camp" and combat training. These guys are first class musicians, first class performers, and first class troops.

Ever since the Department of the Defense decided to cut back on military bands our ceremonies have suffered. The Premier post of the Corps in California is MCRD and that band should be 100 strong. And the fact they are not is despicable. Post bands need to be at least 100 and Division bands need to be no less than 50.

I’m not sure if this is exactly right or not but seems like I remember that the government (pentagon) reduced the numbers of players in the base bands a few years ago. I hope I’m wrong. If that’s true I don’t know if it was done by attrition, retirement or some other way. If so that kinda shows the kind of respect that our government really has for our military. We should be showing our own people and the world our military might in every way we possibly can (especially now) instead of it being the other way around, and that includes band membership.
