I made exactly the same statement when my husband died and just over a year later one of my precious sons died . Both were accidental deaths and I said to my children “ why not us , would we wish this tragedy on another family “. I have faith that God has a plan and I have no idea what it is however I know God knew my family was strong enough to endure these tragedies , never get over them but go on carrying the pain as we all do in our own way and lives .

I did look very critically at the idea of a God. I also looked very critically at atheism. I grew skeptical of skepticism. I found myself feeling very cynical about cynicism. I did what all good mathematicians do: I turned every situation upside down, and checked my math. In the end, I found that atheism is the height of hypocrisy. Every detrimental criticism that atheism uses against Christianity is equally detrimental when applied to atheism itself. It just didn't hold up to scrutiny.

Usually someone who has experienced God will never be talked out of it. and someone who does not want God will rarely be talked into it. In the bible Jesus taught in Parables for the very purpose that those who desire God will understand and those that don't will be confused. The "punishment" is crazy harsh. But it is also self-imposed. People CHOOSE to go to hell. Nobody was ever sent there against their will. Nobody. Everybody that is in hell got there because they made a choice to turn from God. Putting somebody in "reahab" won't help anything if they don't want to change. If 60-100 years of torment on earth doesn't convince somebody to quit doing whatever they want, and turn to God, what makes you think that 100 (or 100k) years of torment in hell would do it?

@mackdmara6 жыл бұрын
GeoCoppens What is before the Universe? God would have to be such a being. Space & time were not there, so immaterial, unchanging,& timeless. Powerful since He started the Universe. He also would have to be personal (if not you are talking about a natural law). That is a fair description of the Christian God. The only thing lacking is moral goodness, but that comes for the moral argument. Since there are objective morals that exist, there must be an objective law giver. This is the maximally Good being. These laws flow from His nature. This is God.

It is true that people are turned away from Christianity because of Christians' behavior, but here is was said that they turn away because the Christians' confession is so different from their practice. I have thought much about this, and I find the error in religion. Our confession isn't the problem, it is that we treat people so contrary to our confession. So what is the Christians confession? I don't know what yours is, but mine is that "I AM A SINNER IN NEED OF A SAVIOR, AND JESUS, THE SON OF GOD, IS THE ONE AND ONLY SAVIOR." So then, why are we so hateful to sinners. Could it be that we feel superior to them? This is the message that the world gets, so when they see Christians sinning they see it as a contradiction to our confession. The sinning Christian is a shame, but It is not a contradiction to his/her confession. Nothing good that comes from me is due to me, but is due to Christ in me. I am a sinner saved by grace, righteous and justified by the death, burial and resurrection of the Savior, Jesus Christ, the Lord. Christians, let's remember our confession, and let's love fellow sinners, the children of wrath, so that they might see and know our Savior and experience His grace as we have (Ephesians 2:1-9).

Like John Lennox said, a follower of Christ is defined by Christ as those who DO as He directs His followers to do. This does not seem to be something that is being recognized or absorbed. This matters. Because the Inquisitors certainly were working on a political agenda and disregarding the way of Christ, thats is, if we read Matthew, Mark, Luke or John of the New Testament . Its very important to come to the reality is that the boundaries of our human mortality does not define the boundaries of our life beyond this temporal age. This age is but an apprenticeship for the ages to come and we daily are making a choice of whether we will stand alone in those ages or be an eternal part of the community of Christ.

And why not just appear to us before pain appears in order to start the relationship? Oh, right. The problem of sin... and the cycle continues...

On miracles... Jesus was not a big fan of them, for he knew that people who depend on miracles to believe, have a very shallow belief system. Once the miracles are gone, they are too. At his baptism, he turned over control of his attendant celestial hosts to his Father. So, when his mother comes along and wanted him to do something about the shortage of wine at the wedding in Cana, his human self wanted to please his mother, but he had promised himself not to use any of his creative powers, and to win people over purely based on his humanness. But the simple moment of wanting his mother to be happy, created an opportunity which his Father used to green-light the angels jumping in and manufacturing the wine. Jesus was as surprised as everyone else at the sudden supply of wine. People today are the same way. We love the miracles, but rarely stop to say 'thank-you'.

Once I entered a Yahoo atheist chat room. I posited this idea in front of the atheists. They got extremely angry @ me for this one & I really don't know why. I hypothesized that. A) Originally God did not exist. B) Evolution was true. C) The universe was extremely old in billions or trillions of years. What then would prevent, after life got started, some creature evolve to the point of intelligence then just continue to evolve & evolve & evolve for millions of generations getting more intelligent & more powerful each iteration until it became super intelligent & transcendent until it took over the entire universe becoming virtually omnipotent & omniscient & able to monitor & own the entire creation? Maybe like the Forbin project? Or perhaps analogous to a Parker Brother's monopoly game where ONE PLAYER got a head start of 30 moves before all the others joined in? I never got such criticism in my entire life. What then if there were originally were no God but one creature (or species) kept evolving in knowledge power & or technology until He or perhaps They, like the Q in Star Trek, took over the entire universe then we got on the scene through evolution or maybe by their design? Why did they get so angry @ me when I started with THEIR HYPOTHESIS?

Why would Christ need to break the cycle in the first place? If God knew we were going to sin, why couldn't his instructions have been clearer, to all of us so we wouldn't have to sin? Why plant a tree that wouldn't serve any other purpose but to make man fall? He knew this was going to happen, and He let it happen. And now Hell is a place designated not just for Satan and his angels but fallen men as well, God's creation. For what? All of it seems so unnecessary in itself.

Uncontrolled desire is how sin becomes destructive, not only against you but others as a whole. The concept of love come from God. the commandment love they neighbor as they self is simple. its the practice and ones on desire that is in conflict. Then add what Paul said was the greatest gift, it was not love, he said charity towards others, either believer or pagan nonbelievers. its not up for debate or our interpretation. we simply have to act on it. then see what the results are.

So basically, he recognizes that there is injustice in the world, but the benefit of Christianity is that there is the hope for justice in the afterlife if it's true. However, if it's false, then the hope is false and less will be done to ensure justice in this life because Christian's will leave that up to God and the next life unless it is justice for themselves in which case, most christians are no better or worse than most non-christians in being merciful and not pursuing justice for themselves in this world.

Hello COMPANIONS, I remember in the bible that when, Mother Mary, Joseph, and Jesus, were at a wedding , and someone mentioned they ran out of wine. Well do you remember Jesus turned the water into wine that day. Then in the bible they mentioned how Jesus was having dinner with his apostles and he mentioned that he turn the wine into his blood and his flesh into bread, and that was called Transubstantiation, so I believe If our Almighty Creator Father wanted to, he could turn himself invisible and go where ever he wants with out any problem.

The question remains then, what does he have against Amputees? He heals cancer etc, and other ailments, what has he got against Amputees? It is a simple question, there is no recorded incident of someone getting his/her leg/arm back...

You are ignoring the other side of the situation. A father doesn't have control over his children. If they choose to go off and suffer for eternity, that is ultimately THEIR choice, not the father's choice. God cannot "let" people suffer for eternity, because he does not control people. They have a choice. C. S. Lewis probably put it best. "There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, 'Thy will be done,' and those to whom God says, 'All right, then, have it your way.'"

The greater issue are the problems or things people have done to offend God. He will cause men more problems and finally destroy mankind.

How do you know god is offended and will destroy mankind? Without actual evidence for such perturbing claims, it is irresponsible to make them. If you keep it up, God shall smite thee with very... um... smiteful smites.

Get a dictionary and look up the word "context"... Then keep Dr Lennox's comments in context.
