Footnote: So, in the video, I say that we can’t know if God suffers or not for sure, and that seems true. Were I religious, I wouldn’t feel like I had absolute knowledge of the nature of God, and that’s certainly the prevailing belief of most religious people, particularly Jews. That said, writing this video, I imagined I’d get two responses that I do want to talk about here. First, “You say that God doesn’t seem like he suffers, but perhaps he suffers when people suffer, feels the pain people do.” Second, “I’m a Christian and I certainly believe that God suffers. He took the form of Christ and suffered and died for our sins.”
The reason I put both these potential comments together is that my response to them is the same. In these situations, God NEEDS humans in order to suffer. Either because the pain of human existence brings God pain, or because God took a human form in order to suffer. Thus, suffering is still known uniquely to humans, an experience God may not innately have. In fact, I would say this response only strengthens the argument of this video. Perhaps people are uniquely able to experience morality because they suffer, and God requires the assumption of human suffering in order to have that sense. Interesting stuff.

This is like telling an infant not to push their finger into a plug or they'll get electrocuted. An infant does not understand what electricity is and thus does not know what electrocution means, which means they do not understand whether putting their finger into a plug is a good or bad thing.

Growing up christian and hearing the story of adam and eve, I remember thinking "If eating the fruit and gaining moral understanding is "sin", then what would have God done if adam and eve DIDN'T eat the fruit? Would he just have happy cheerful slaves for forever until the end of time? Is that what he wanted? Or was the serpent always meant to talk eve into sinning? And if the serpent was always fated to do this and the fall of man was always meant to happen, do we have any real independence or choice?" After this I would've scolded myself for even thinking such thoughts. But I'm an atheist now, and this was one of the things I remember thinking about a lot in my christian days.

Actually, God created us to praise him, according to the Bible. That's what he can't do. Praise himself.

I was taught in synagogue that the Adam and Eve myth was about becoming an adult. Sure, being a child and having your parents care for you and keep you safe is fun, but eventually, everyone wants more. Everyone will reach out and take a bite of that apple. Everyone will step out of their parents' influence and have to make their own way in the world. It's a lot tougher being all on your own, but you now have the knowledge to make it work.

In my Christian upbringing, I was taught that the main point of this story was the part about woman having to endure the pain of childbirth and being subservient to her husband. I think it’s a big part of the reason I moved away from Christianity.

My interpretation of this story; tied with The Islamic versioning of this - isn’t that the Apple will make you die; it will make you know death. It isn’t to make you feel hunger, but to know that you will eventually die of starvation . In the Islamic version of this, it’s specific to point out that after Adam and Eve ate from the fruit - they felt shame and clothed themselves. Essentially not because they were naked now, but because they now KNOW they are naked.

If you take out the "of good and evil" part, the story of the Garden of Eden in Genesis actually becomes a lot more coherent. A "Tree of Knowledge" makes so much more sense than a "tree of knowledge of good and evil."

Okay ik know this is like seven months old but I wanna give some historical and jewish perspective on why this story is the way it is. Viewing this solely from a Christian view kind of overlooks the mind set in which it was written and how all of that works. So for the Jewish perspective:?
