Karen isnt even a mean girl. Regina simply pulled all the pretty girls that are possible to outrank her and made them the subordinate to her queendom. If the prettiest girls in school are under her thumb, then no one else is prettier than her. That was the reason why she approached Cady Heron. She's a pretty little thing that's a fish-out-of-water, the boys were hitting on Cady when Regina "saved" Cady. From that point on she made it so Cady is under her thumb too. Too bad (good?) that Janice got to Cady first.

Gretchen was so smart she learnt a whole new language ( Mandarin Chinese ) by the end of the movie to join another click and she also was really good at gathering information ( gossip ) for Regina . Karen was also not really a mean girl , she was very sweet and also super pretty . Regina of course is incredibly smart, sharp , gorgeous and calculating . Cady was a math genius with looks that threatened Regina enough for her to make her part of her click . Almost all the female characters are very beautiful and super intelligent, but they were reduced to cat fight and sabotage each other because of society .

For all the people saying that she was just dumb and kind and wasn’t actually mean are wrong. Don’t get me wrong I love Karen’s character. One of my personal favourites. But she participated in the burn book, laughed at it and you are all forgetting that scene were she was on the phone with Regina, Gretchen and Cady whilst Gretchen told her that Regina called her a slut. Karen then starts talking bad about Gretchen on the phone to Regina then starts talking bad about Regina to Gretchen. Basically being really two faced.
