Supposedly the BNL/Sarah McLachlan version of this song was recorded live at a radio station Christmas concert in downtown Detroit around 2000. That was long before the plethora of cellphone cameras which are abundant today. Not sure they ever played the song together since then. Would love to see some grainy VHS version of the original, however, if it exists?!

Actually it was recorded in August 1996 backstage before a benefit show in Michigan. The date I believe I read was August 24, 1996

@ironysteeth: as the previous poster said, it's a double bass, or commonly called an upright bass. But you are correct, he TOTALLY owns it. Makes me want to learn how to play it! :-)
