Kind of ironic that she is talking about Ghandi in the classroom scene. One of his most famous quotes is - “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” Especially appropriate when the message of the God's Not Dead movies is something that Jesus probably wouldn't approve of. So the movie chooses to use an example of someone who wasn't a fan of the behaviour of Christians, in a movie which chooses to be incredibly dishonest. Thereby reinforcing any negative opinions that non-Christians may have about Christians. Thankfully, there are also Christians like Kevin, who recognise this dishonesty in these movies and is not afraid to call it out.

TychoCelchu that’s the point though. She had no intention of preaching the message of Jesus to the classroom, but a student that she helped find religion pressured her into it. So that she runs the risk of losing her job. How unfair is it to live in a world where you can talk about an outspoken agnostic Hindu like Mohandas Gandhi, but not the ministry of Jesus of Nazareth [who, when you get right down to it, simply an apocalyptic Jewish rabbi, with a message of tolerance and unification to tell the world. You know what tolerance is, don’t you? That thing that makes Democrats bend over backwards? Jesus invented that.)

Got the source and the quote wrong, but you're close in terms of the message. Eh, the source and quote are actually super close too lol. It was actually Dwijendranath Tagore (Bara Dada), a different philosopher from India, who said it in the mid-1920's, and his words were, "Jesus is ideal and wonderful, but you Christians, you are not like him." You might be more familiar with Dada's brother, Rabindranath Tagore. He was a polymath and an artist, specifically a poet and musician, who won a Nobel prize in Literature (Gitanjali). Odds are you've never heard of either of them tbh lol. Dada was friends with Ghandi though. So there is at least a tenuous connection...

I notice that most characters in these movies who convert to a Christianity do so in a time of extreme distress. I'm not a Christian, but it seems odd that they would advertise their own religion as something only for people who hit rock bottom. What about the atheists who are doing just fine? How about the people who convert to Christianity because it just really rang true for them, and not cuz they were dying of cancer or some shit?

Their issue with religion primarily is when it is used to justify negative behavior such as Bible shoving, destructive criticism and misplaced judging. We give ourselves a bad name. Your idea for a film at the end of the movie would be excellent because it would not only be an opportunity to tell a story about caring about others but also about an educator's impact. But, you make a good point in saying that people need to stand up and say that these movies are ridiculous propaganda pieces that make every non-believer into looking like they're evil... which is exactly what leads to them disliking Christians to begin with. Movies like this are self-defeating. Jesus never lived with that 'us vs. them' mentality, it was 'us FOR them'. Jesus didn't come to condemn the world, so why are his followers so bent on doing it? +Mi Les "if they have a 'good life' what is there to convince them of?" Convince us of what? That you believe there is some higher power? Why do you feel the need to convince atheists of your personal beliefs. That IS WHY they're called beliefs on the first place. Also why is it a problem that we believe that we're responsible for our own life decisions as opposed to a deity of some sort? If this is in any way worrisome to you, then you have a much bigger problem than you think. Also, I love the fact that you say that atheists aren't evil yet they're not "righteous." No offense, but when you put it that way, I just can't take it seriously. At all.

+Cameron Alidor The Bible actually says that none are righteous. (but we are made right with God through Jesus) Telling people about Jesus isn't about trying to sell them something or win a debate. It's about sharing something that changed my life through love. I don't believe my faith absolves me of personal responsibility, in fact, it makes it more heightened. I answer to God and myself and others that watch me, looking at me as a Christ follower. I don't really like when movies like this paint Jesus as a magic everything-is-perfect-now button. That's not reality. I've gone through really bad situations despite my faith. My faith gives me hope for a future better than I have now, and better than I would have without him.
@SmangItDrums8 жыл бұрын
ReplayStationShow "The Bible actually says that none are righteous. (but we are made right with God through Jesus)" I know it does. I don't believe in your god or the Bible, so this does not apply to me. "Telling people about Jesus isn't about trying to sell them something or win a debate. It's about sharing something that changed my life through love." And that's good for you. My point wasn't to demonize you for your beliefs. My point is that atheists simply want to live their lives without being evangelized to. To some people (religious, that is), that's too much to ask. "I don't believe my faith absolves me of personal responsibility, in fact, it makes it more heightened. I answer to God and myself and others that watch me, looking at me as a Christ follower." Good for you, more power to you. I don't operate that way, but that doesn't detract from how you live your life. "I don't really like when movies like this paint Jesus as a magic everything-is-perfect-now button. That's not reality. I've gone through really bad situations despite my faith. My faith gives me hope for a future better than I have now, and better than I would have without him." Unfortunately, that's just about all of Christian cinema for you. That's the point of a propaganda piece. There are many ways that a movie can be made with a strong, inspiration message that can be religious (or even not include religion). Even more so, there are movies that can be inspirational without having to demonize and/or caricature nonbelievers with an aim at making theists look pious, self-righteous, gullible, etc. And again as far as your faith, good for you. As an atheist, I'm not offended by how you live. I could honestly care less, as your beliefs don't affect me one bit. Pureflix, on the other hand, cares GREATLY about my personal beliefs to the point of making a movie franchise designed from teh ground up to make atheists look like cartoon villains with a vindictive bent on taking down religion. This movie and plenty of others are prime examples of this.

Last week I watched this movie. My biggest gripe about it was that it reminded me of another, much, much, MUCH better movie, "Inherit the Wind." (You should review this movie soon, Kev.) This movie takes place in the 1920s. A teacher is arrested and put on trial for teaching Darwin's Theory of Evolution. One major scene in that movie was when the defense (this was a criminal trial) brings in a slew of witnesses who support Darwin's Theory of Evolution, but the prosecution objects because the point of the trial wasn't whether or not evolution was real but whether or not it was legal to teach it. The trial in "God's Not Dead 2" shouldn't have been that Jesus actually existed but whether or not it's legal to discuss Him and His teachings in a public school. The scriptwriter completely missed his own point.

I'm wondering if they're going to mention that in Houston A: The concern for which the those specific five pastor's sermon notes were subpoenaed was incitement to violence. B: It was five pastors out of the entire city of Houston, not a blanket subpoena. Or C: whatever the reasons may have been, and whether they were right or wrong, public outcry was such that the mayor backed off. Thus implying that maybe this persecution the franchise is trying to sell isn't really a thing, because elected officials have to answer to the vast Christian majority who aren't about to have it.

If one were to actually read Matthew 5:43-48, one would find that what Jesus was not talking about non violence, but was saying to not HATE your enemy. That would be like somone pointing a gun to my head and I say, well, I could kill you, but Jesus said to love my enemies, so I can't and now I die. NO! What would be correct is trying all other paths to get that person to not shoot me in the head, but upon failure of those paths, killing the guy trying to kill me. What would be wrong is to kill that person out of vengeance. That would be hate, and not loving of my enemy. And this is pretty ironic because this whole movie seems to be hating non deliveries which is exactly what this verse is saying not to do. ARE THESE WRITERS EVEN CHRISTIANS? P.S. Sorry for the yelling.

Thank you for your thoughtful and intellectual approach to Scripture. I was debating with an old classmate about food banks and said "Didn't Jesus teach you to care for the poor?" "no! he said charity should be in the heart, meaning you should never do something unless you WANT to do it" I really don't think that's what Jesus meant. It would be wholly inconsistent with literally everything he taught.

"That's the problem with atheism, doesn't take away the pain, just takes away the hope." As an exfundamentalist Christian-turned-atheist, it's true that atheism doesn't take away the pain. But Christianity only compounded my pain by giving me false hope, so... I would rather believe the ugly truth than a beautiful lie. God was my (abusive) imaginary friend whose hand I held until I was ready to be on my own. And I'm better off for it. Life is life regardless of what you believe, sometimes it's good, sometimes it sucks -- it's all over the place, it's not better because you're a Christian or worse because you're an atheist, or viceversa. This whole movie is a joke, and that's coming from me, Christian. In my history class we're talking about colonialism in America and we use scripture all the time, cause religion was a main push factor from England because the colonists had been persecuted, somethin somethin about Puritanism or whatever, I never said that I was good in the class! The Bible is part of human history you can't just ignore it because some people would possibly, but not likely, get offended. Social Studies is just one of those classes where you use and talk about religious documents, not just the bible but the Quran, the works of Hinduism, the Torah, etc. its just unavoidable. Two years ago, my school had huge protests against history book censorship, so clearly this type of thing would be uncalled for to tons and tons of people.

This is one of the best reviews of this awful movie I've seen yet. I hope you get a lot more support. ...Sadly, promoting the persecution complex and telling massive lies about politics that don't agree with fundies and resorting to demagoguery and deception is fairly commonplace, despite that resorting to such tactics to promote any sort of ideal proves to me that the person doesn't actually care about the ideals they claim to profess, but about themselves and their personal gain and are basically resorting to manipulation and trickery to take advantage of their supporters while silencing criticism against them.

As always, Kevin, you are the voice of reason. Just wanted to also say that I hate how these movies make the secular school/university environment look like the Spanish Inquisition or the Mafia. ("ANSWER THE QUESTION!!!" is a line reserved for shows like 24, not movies like this). By the way, it's a fact that God's Not Dead 2 got *worse* reviews than Sex and the City 2 on Metacritic. When I told my pastor this, he laughed. Sad. In my experience, I've actually met a lot of nice people in my community college. As embarrassing as it sounds, the non-Christians I've met ended up being waaaaay nicer than many "Christians" I've encountered. Yes, people do cuss a lot. Yes, people do things I personally don't want to do (like vape). But they aren't evil people intent on destroying my faith. In fact, I would argue my faith has grown stronger. Believe it or not, the guy at 39:50 spoke at my graduation. Great speaker, but ended up in a not-so-great movie. God bless you and what you do.

Why do I get the feeling I could churn out a better Christian movie despite being Muslim? I mean, yeah, because I'm not a Christian I don't have any real personal experience with the Christian religion. But considering that the teachings of Islam and Christianity are almost the exact same (only real difference being we don't believe that God has partners or a son), I feel I could come up with a much more fair, respectable, unbiased movie about the Christian faith. Here's an idea I have (bear with me, I'm making this up as I go. Also I'm using "he" but this could very well apply to a "she"), it's about a Christian who's a little TOO Christian (As in the "I'm right, everybody's wrong mentality"). Anyway, he ends up in a situation where things are going bad for him (losing his job, his home, recent tragedy, you get the idea) and he's starting to give up on himself because despite hours, days, weeks of praying and other Christian practices, things just aren't working for him. But then he meets either a younger Christian or an Aethiest or maybe a Muslim, someone the main character never would consider a "good" christian like himself. This new friend ends up helping him out, teaching a lesson that everybody needs to learn nowadays about religion. Faith is about being a good person, regardless of how you believe. It's one thing to say you're Christian, or do Christian things, but it means nothing if you reject other people and their thoughts. As a Christian, you should be welcoming to your neighbors and friends, regardless of race, gender, religion, whatnot. In the end, our main character has an Ebenezer Scrooge moment and ends up making things right simply by talking to people and finding the solutions with their help. Short version: Guy believes Christianity is the way and doesn't need help from anyone who thinks differently than him. His life goes to shit. He's about to give up. But he meets a new friend who teaches him the true meaning of faith and religion. So what do you guys think? Decent idea? Especially one coming from a Muslim instead of a Christian? Let me know if you'd like to see this become a movie or something. Or maybe you have ideas of your own. Go ahead and share them.
@tintinismybelgian7 жыл бұрын
Your idea's pretty vague at this point, but it could be developed further if you so chose. Perhaps, if/since your life experience as a Muslim would make writing a story about a Muslim character easier, perhaps you could/should make the protagonist Muslim, rather than Christian.

@@tintinismybelgian Late reply to this, but I can see your point. I'm not exactly the most "devout" Muslim though, so I can't really speak from experience what a super strict Muslim is like (plus I don't want to have a character that's centered around the rather harsh stereotypes about their culture.) Besides, from a marketing standpoint in America, would people really want to see a movie about a Muslim lead character being taught to be better by a Christain? Besides, the Muslim community tends to have a very...mixed opinion about the usage of media to promote faith.

I’m thinking of a movie where the protagonist is a bad Christian, the stereotypical Bible thumping one, and the antagonist is perceived by the audience as an atheist because he/she is against the protagonist. And when they revealed the cross on the girl's neck, I literally whispered under my breath, "IT'S CHRISTIAAAAAAAANNNNNNNN!!!" Oh and THANK YOU for that final soapbox. I think I'm starting to get what you're saying about these Christian movies. I'm also a Christian, and hope that more people get to know Jesus Christ, but these movies keep jamming it in there instead of like you said " telling a good story". It's why I think risen and miracles in heaven are good, you can understand the message without shoving it in there, they still told a cool story. I wish there were more Christian movies that had a perfect mix of telling people about God, and reaching out to atheists and help them and love them, and at the same time still being a good movie with good story, writing, and characters.
