45 years ago I went out and bought this album. I was an atheist, I heard a track on the radio and loved it. I was listening to it and found myself on my knees. I didn't know what to say. I can remember saying to the Lord; I want you. Something profound happened And I was never the same again. I'm 70 now. I am an Englishman in Bulgaria. I run a camp site based on the teaching of Jesus. Trinity Rocks Farm. Bulgaria. If your ever passing through, call in. It would be so nice to meet people who have been blessed by this musical.

Let them not pass, like weeds, away! Their heritage a sunless day! God save the people! Shall crime bring crime for ever, Strength aiding still the strong? Is it Thy will, O Father! That man shall toil for wrong? 'No!' say Thy mountains; 'No!' Thy skies; 'Man's clouded sun shall brightly rise, And songs be heard instead of sighs.' God save the people! When whilt thou save the people? O God of mercy! when? The people, Lord! the people! Not thrones and crowns, but men! God save the people! Thine they are; Thy children, as Thy angels fair; Save them from bondage and despair! God save the people! Ebenezer Elliott

Only after seeing this musical was I able to make some sense of the gospels. It was the first and best Broadway musical I ever saw, at the age of 12. I'll never forget it. I also think it is probably the best way to introduce young children to Christianity. Right after I saw it I went out, bought the album and memorized every song. I still know most of the lyrics. Oh, and? Not for nothing, this was probably the best representation of the hippy culture (and its garb) that you'll find. Today's re-vamped, poorly remembered versions leave much to be desired. And I just can't get over Victor Garber. :D

Growing up watching this movie really cemented a more beautiful wholesome loving god in my head, i feel like a lot of religious people see god through a vision filtered by centuries of other people warping things to fit their narrative. People were upset by the hippie portrayal of Jesus, which is kinda silly considering the whole hippie thing is just people almost finding religion (some hippies like myself are more traditionally religious). I realize I’m just writing a rough draft of my sermon at this point. I just with more people saw the loving part of god, not just wrath and vengeance.

+Chris Smith The new version is dreadful. It really is - I tried to like it. It lacks the heart and enthusiasm that this has. Also - it sounds very much like a guy named Joe recorded the new one in his basement on his computer. This version - they spared no expense and got the best musicians. Paul Scheaffer of Dave Letterman fame i- plays keyboards on this.. Carmine Appice is the drummer. Just great musicians.. The new one is a drum machine and sterile over processed instruments. The saving grace is the remake of beautiful city - Hunter Parrish is an amazing talent. Other than that - the new version is dreadful.

So according to this clip, either John baptized Jesus (as seen in this clip) and betrayed him later, as it's played by the same guy I think, which would make this movie not accurate, OR Judas baptized Jesus and betrayed him later, which would also make this movie not accurate. I like the movie a lot, but they could have gotten someone to play each character instead of having one guy play two characters who are quite different.
