I honestly think this show could just end after 2 seasons. I would’ve been more than happy if this was done. Aside from the loose ends of Laurie + Rue, Cassie + Nate, Lex + Fez…there’s enough ambiguity for me to be ok w/some arcs not being complete. To wait 2 years for another season, idk how they can really continue & make the show stronger. This is why I’m usually ok with some shows ending after 1 or 2 seasons. this was a very strange finale for me. on one hand there is a lot of character conclusion with characters like maddy, who has now completed her i guess arc with nate and has fully come to realize how abusive he is, and seems to be starting the process to move on, which isn't something i feel the show needs to explore much further than it already has (nate threatening her with a gun aside - i know she is the way she is but you don't just walk off a traumatizing event like that, but the show doesn't seem to be terribly concerned with that). on the other hand, though, i have so many questions. kat was COMPLETELY sidelined in this season, to the point where i would genuinely forget that she was in the show. it really feels like there was an arc written for her, but all that we got was some commentary on the beauty community disregarding one wanting to have a healthier lifestyle in favor of faux body positivity and her botching her breakup with ethan, both of which are completely unrelated in the grand scheme of the show and feel disconnected from the main plot. it's not like kat was one of my favorite characters, but there is definitely a noticeable hole in the events of the show with her scenes being cut. it also feels like nate and jules were supposed to have more to do with each other, given how the first season ended and how her special episode went down. despite this, they only wound up having one scene together. i guess the majority of my problems with this season stem from plot threads that were established in the first season getting dropped. every criticism i can think of outside of various writing concerns (you mentioned how ashtray stabbing the informant was a dumbass move and went against his established character of being smart despite his age, which i agree with and feel falls into this category) has to do with the writers having to come up with things that compensate for the removal of certain plotlines. mckay was written out entirely, leaving cassie with nothing to do, so they throw in this thing about how her and nate start fucking even though it comes out of nowhere. kat i've already mentioned. they do it in this season as well, making the flow of the season feel even messier. i guess rue is just walkin free while owing laurie 10k now, that just kinda got dropped after the fifth episode. idk, everything just felt so intentional last season. something would happen and you'd feel the effects of it on the other side of the show. it was all interconnected and each event felt like there was a weight attached to it, whereas with this season it's a tossup whether or not something that happens one episode will have anything to do with the next. it feels a lot more focused on drama and spectacle rather than talking about and dealing with tough issues, which has always been a strength of the show (as shown by rue's arc remaining pretty consistently great throughout the season). the more i think about this season the less i feel anything really mattered. i don't watch euphoria to see some huge drama go down - i can go anywhere for that. i fear that soon enough this show will just become a better-shot version of glee or riverdale.

I agree with you on most of those observations about the different plotlines. However, regarding Kat, her story was already created and scenes were filmed but due to the actress’s feelings about her character’s direction and behavior, the director pulled a lot of her scenes at the last minute not leaving time for rewriting/reshooting. So we are left with a huge hole in her story. Perhaps if the actress would have spoken up sooner during production, she could have had time to collaborate with the writers and director to come up with a different storyline. Not sure if she will return for the following seasons. Sucks because I really liked Kat, up until she did Ethan dirty.

Ashtray’s death leads to something new. Fez has to grow as a person. He can’t keep doing this after losing his brother and possibly his grandma. He’ll need lexi’s love and maybe even rue’s friendship to heal and be better after everything.
