My grandpa was a faithful Christian, a bi-vocational rural pastor. When his Alzheimer’s got advanced he could not longer lift up his head. This song was an encouragement to me at that time. This year makes nine for him in the land of no suffering.

I totally understand your perspective. Recently I've gone through a really rough patch that has left me seeking God more than I ever have. In the midst of that, though, I found that my snobby view toward Christian music melted away. It's not that I lowered my standards, but rather I focused more on the message rather than the skill of the music. When life starts pounding on you, the right message is more important than what we consider "good music."
@viviave83 жыл бұрын
I've come to that realization too & it's a blessing. God's love & the fellowship of the Spirit transcends genre! I'm generally not a fan of most popular Christian music styles either but if I really wanna hear God's voice, He is there, speaking to me through whatever song I end up putting on. I feel like I learned a valuable lesson about acceptance, diversity, & expression -- the many fascinating facets of God's human creation -- because, as a big music fan & songwriter, I can sometimes get into the (fairly elitist) rut of "oh well that ain't how I'd say or do that..." which totally crushes the intent of that artist's art. Especially when it comes to the noble profession of trying to spread the word of God through art! They are trying to comfort you & God is trying to use your fellow Christians to help you! There are times I can still be selective but for the most part, if I want God to show me something, He will -- & He can use pretty much ANYTHING to do it with.

I'm not a Christian music fan. I'm a snobby indie guy. And hell, I'm not even a Christian. But I love this song. The melody on the chorus is really simple but really nice, and I love the driving rhythm section there. Jars of Clay could do with more songs like this.

@silverwolfrunniing I know those comments were from six months ago, but God holds everything. He made those people and things, they are His. You can't have them. They were never yours. It's a give and take relationship with God. For a time, you think you need what you want, but there are those times where he does take them away for your good. In the end, everything works together for your good. Don't get discouraged, in this life you were made to overcome all obstacles great and small with God.

What does "god will lift up your head" mean?
@viviave83 жыл бұрын
It means that God will never abandon you when you need Him. Heartache and hard times will try to strip you of hope and life but God's love is there for you if you fall into it. He will carry you when you can't go on anymore. No matter how long it takes, God never gives up on the ones who call to Him for relief. He wants to save us all from our pain.

I listen to the Smashing Pumpkins and Jars of Clay; have for over 20 years: these songs are nothing alike. At all. I don’t know where that “comparison” ever came from, but it’s completely inaccurate. If you’re talking about the mood or feelings the songs give you, they’re very uplifting songs, then yes, they are similar in that one aspect; that can happen with any song combination though, so no argument there. They are nowhere close to anything resembling plagiarism. If it was, Corgan would notice; and he hasn’t for 15 years, which is when this song came out. Please don’t think stupid thoughts just to have “the lawyer” in you want to be noticed.
@magusvirga4 жыл бұрын
Raquel Jenney You like the style because the song is very uplifting and because it’s actual “music” is something that’s hard to replicate. Very few bands have the ability to write a song that starts out slow, plodding, almost HYMN like (hint, it is a hymn) then grow in instrumentation, arrangement, tempo and energy and crescendo to a grand finale. Don’t let that guy fool you into thinking there’s some grand argument to be made here: there isn’t. They’re both great songs that are very uplifting, full of good energy, and bring forth good emotions. That is where they’re similar. And MANY songs can be like that from one to another.
