for these pictures, do you use any modifiers or just the original one? what is the distance you place the light from the subject and can you give some average settings

About half of these photos are using the Westcott Rapid Box XL softbox, and if so, it would be just out of the frame (I don’t usually photoshop out lights. I put them just out of sight). About half were taken at 85 1.4, 1/8000s, and about the other half at 16mm f/10, 1/250s, my two favourite (and opposite) setups. Haha. Most were at 1/2 to 1/1 power.

I just pulled the trigger on the ad400 pro since they’re slightly on sale now. I thought about the 600 since the light can be extremely harsh here in California but the cost difference between them was more than I could justify.

Was about to purchase the new, non-TTL version of the 600Pro from Adorama yesterday but found that B&H was selling the TTL version of the Pro for the same $750. Needless to say, I bought the TTL version even though I never use TTL. It arrives tomorrow. It will be interesting to see how it compares to my AD600BM.

Great video. Actually spent goof afternoon watching loads of your awesome videos. Currently deciding to have a powerful godox studio light. Since this review, i didn't see you review any other equalent strobe. Are you still using this one? Do godox produce something like deflector (like elinchrome does) i really like reflective lighting set ups so I have really soft light. No hotspots etc. Thanks for producing content. Amazing work and effort.

I had to look up these deflectors before answering. I’d honestly never even heard of them before. I don’t believe Godox makes anything like that, but their bigger lights are simply Bowen’s mount, so you can buy anyone’s modifiers to put on there. I’m still using this one quite a bit. Closest thing in power to this that I’ve tested since is the AD300 Pro. Obviously in two very different leagues ;)

Thanks for the review Wes. The batteries are not that expensive really when you compare it to the other options from Elinchrom, Profoto and Broncolor. Contemplating adding a few of these units to the studio soon, they seem like great lights.

They’re just expensive when compared to other Godox products. They account for almost half the price of the entire device itself. And when they’re not even the highest quality batteries to begin with, it just doesn’t make a lot of sense. But even so, Godox value is hard to deny 😉

The AD400 is in a weird in between place for me. Not bright enough for midday use, overkill for indoor, and no built in Bowens mount. I know those who have them love them, though 👌🏻

Nice review and great photos! I just got two Flashpoint XPLOR 400s (AD400 Pro) recently for studio work and really liking them so far. A nice upgrade from an old AlienBee 400 and a couple of no name manual speedlights. The 600s were a little more than what I need, but makes perfect sense for what you do. And yeah, I bought might through Adorama for all the reasons you mentioned. :-)

What do you use on them for modifiers? Is adapting them on a hassle at all? I generally find the AD200 is enough for studio work. But I’m generally not fast paced in the studio myself.

@@WesPerry Right now I'm using the Glow EZ Lock Octas. When I bought the strobes, each came with a free 48" EZ Lock Octa, so that was kind of a "no-brainer". I also bought a 60" because I tend to use that size a lot. The Octas have a Bowens mount, so there isn't any adapting other than adding the Bowens mount onto the strobe (which it comes with). They're pretty much made to go together. They aren't quite as high quality as some other modifiers I've used, but they are perfectly fine and a lot less expensive. I think they are a really good value for the money. They come with a reflector plate and a grid. I use the reflector plate and the double diffusion and have gotten nice even light in my tests. Happy with them so far.

I love my Rapid Boxes, but the grids are hard to come by and Crazy expensive for no reason.

@@WesPerry Yeah, I have the small Rapid Box for my speedlights and it's great for dramatic and moody stuff or as a beauty dish that doesn't take up a lot of storage room. I've never had grids before because they usually are expensive, etc. But they come with the Glow Octas, so you can't beat that!

Thanks, Wes! Currently thinking about changing from Elinchrom and don’t really know what to do. Your video was a big help. A question: sometimes I shoot soccer teams, which means 200+ portraits (5-20 shots from each) in around 4h. Power setting is around 1/4 to 1/8. Could this get me into trouble? Raising ISO was not an option on Elinchrom, because one of the three lights was at the minimum power setting. Perhaps the bigger number of stops on the AD600 would help in this regard.

DON'T DO IT, elinchrom is FAR better and more durable. I have been using mines for 11 years now with no maintenance and they run as new.

@@HELIOSSTUDIO I've done it in December and never looked back. I have used various Elinchroms before for 15 years. But they failed to create usable new products while the rest of the world continued to develop. The Elinchrom One is merely a joke.

That depends a lot on the situation. Most of the time I’m using the Westcott Rapidbox XL, because it’s just so easy. If I have more time and space and an assistant, I’ll use the large Laofas softbox. If I’m by myself or it’s windy, I’ll use the small Aputure Light Dome Mini (I have videos on both of those).

Late to this party, Wes, but just purchased as my first strobe (which might be ridiculous), but it was on sale for the price you quote for the old AD600 BM version and for what I want to do (outdoor, action shots) wanted the option of enough light with HSS or fast t0.1 time with enough power. Not sure yet if what I imagine will work, but will find out soon. Also liked the Bowens mount that is native. In the end, this ended up being less expensive that the AD 400. Thanks for review. Do you think this would still be a good value today at a bit over 500 dollars US? Back at you when I find out. Weight of the unit is my main concern and fragility of the side screen.

Thanks for this video! I got very worried about your experiences with the snowflakes. Living in northern Norway, we are very used to snowy and rainy days. Is the build quality a deal braker? Have you had more issues with water or snow entering the unit?

I haven’t had any issues with water or snow as of yet. But I’ve avoided using it in such conditions, as it’s not really a weather sealed lens.

Great review. I'm curious about the shot about 7:47 in of the middle-large group of people at the wedding. Was this shot at full power? The light must have been somewhat far back where the light/light stand wouldn't have got in the shot. I'm curious what light modifier you used for this one in particular. Thanks!

A cheap 18” Neewer ring light as my key light camera right, and a Godox AD-B2 using its LED’s beside me camera left as an edge light. Main camera is an a9 with the 35 1.4 @ f/1.6 using face detect continuous AF, B cam is an a7ii with the 90mm Macro @f/5.6, locked focus (because it can’t be trusted with video AF).

Just found your channel. Great stuff! Do you think the build quality of the bowens mount and bracket of the 600Pro is strong enough to hold a 36" softbox and possible a 60" softbox?

I can tell you that I have AD600BM and after using it with an Elinchrom 175 cm softbox for about 4 times the bayonet broke. The metal piece of the bayonet is held in place by small screws which are screwed in plastic. I don't know how good the "pro" version is constructed.

I’ll have a look to see what’s holding it on, but I regularly use a 6’ octo in studio, and a 3’ Rapid Box XL in high winds outside, many dozens of times, and have yet to have an issue.

Thanks for the review. I have the AD600 and I too live in a more wet than dry climate (Oregon) and discovered it has no weather proofing. I ended up ordering the 600 Extension Head and storing the unit in a bag that I hang bellow on my stand. I found you do loose a 1/3 stop of light with the extension head. That's NOT in any Godox specs.

@@WesPerry No actually less so, but I have it in the Godox optional canvas bag and cover it at the base of the stand. Extension is also good because you have much less weight in the air. It gets windy here too.

Please answer my question : about head lamp differences in pro and bm, pro has soft flat top, that looks like profoto heads, which give more soft light spot in standart zoom reflector 60 degree angle. I choose outdoor flash to use with standart reflector like profoto. Did you see light spot difference in those conditions?

I just got Godox ad600bm and the high speed sync is not working on Sony a7r3, I have tried everything under the sun to make it work, but the curtains are not fast enough, and it won’t switch into HSS mode if shooting faster than 200th of a second. Do you you know if the pro will work on Sony a7r3??

Oh perfect! Glad you won’t have to go through any extra hassle with it. Sometimes the flash units can be a bit fussy on the Sony shoe. All those tiny little contacts.

In other comments I mentioned that I'll be buying more evolv 200's + accessories.. though I will also be investing in a bigger strobe.. Currently leaning towards the Explor/AD 400pro.. Thoughts? Where my bowens Gemini 500r's are now ancient by comparison.. They are tanks.. they have taken hard falls on concrete without even a dent.. they still work fine years later.. They are mostly metal construction and all manual.. but I need to bring an external battery. Cables.. external receiver.. and yes.. they are heavier than the godox units.. fun to carry while hiking to a spot hard to get to especially if you want it partially set up so you dont have to re set it up every dif location.. more fun.. I'm actually looking to sell both units originally $600 each to buy either 2 more evolv 200's & adb2 or an explore 400 pro.

All depends on how much power you need. If the 500's were always more than enough power, then the 400 should be fine. If they were often at 1/1, then you're probably going to want a 600 instead.

I do eventually want the 600.. but I think the 400Pro will suit me fine.. before I go that route I will be gett another evolv 200 and will get the adb2 head to turn the two lights into one 400ws light..

I was thinking of adding one of these to my arsenal as a back up because I am abusive to my strobes. I have a couple 600 TTL older version flashpoint. Your comment about quality is unfounded. First the owners manual for this unit states "Always keep this product dry. Do not use in rain or damp conditions." Yes, this is a RTFM moment, not a problem with the unit. Then you compare it to a "Professional product" suggesting it was not as professional as the ProPhoto B1 (which by the way is not an outdoor flash) this is what the manual reads for the B1 "Generator, lamp heads and accessories are only intended for indoor photographic use. Do not place or use the equipment where it can be exposed to moisture, extreme electromagnetic fields or in areas with flammable gases or dust! Do not expose the equipment to dripping or splashing. Do not place any objects filled with liquids, such as vases, on or near the equipment." Or dust? My AD600TTL old models have been out to the dusty motocross tracks on numerous occasions without failure. I do have to blow them out with compressed air. I bought mine as open box specials for almost half off and I know they were used by the store, they told me they put new bulbs in the units and they still provided the manufacturers warranty. (which has long expired. I just think it was unfair you complain about it not working when you needed to work when you got it wet, or ran it in damp conditions. That it still works now is a testament to how robust it is despite your horrible abuse of the product :). I wonder if the B1 which is cannot be operated outside would hold up? Oh and by the way, every photographer know you are not supposed to shoot strobes at 1/1 for any sustained time. It means you don't have a powerful enough strobe. I did buy the 1200 remote head for my two 600s when I should midday, so they don't overheat or are stressed as to reduce product life.

Hi Wes! I tried looking before asking here but unsuccessfully. My question is, are there accessories available for this light? Such as barn doors, snoot, dome diffuser, etc? With how snug the cap fits on it, I'd be surprised if there were not these attachments for it? Or Bowens compatible?

It’s a Bowen’s mount light, so you can put whatever you want on there. When it was first released there was talk of proprietary accessories to go on the front of the stock reflector that comes with it, but I’m not sure that those ever materialized.

That sounds like a good combo yep 👍🏻 Just don’t use rechargeable Ni-Mh batteries in the XPro. It gets cranky when it doesn’t have a full 1.5V from the batteries (or 3.0V combined rather).

Maybe just a square of clear packing tape over the switch? It's unfortunate that you had a failure, not that much of an upcharge for them to build something with a waterproof switch. But I guess if you're not paying a Profoto price you don't get a Profoto level product. I've got the previous generation 600, it's a workhorse and the slower recycle time is not a problem for me. Usually spot on exposure with TTL. Nice, honest reviews are refreshing in this day of payola raves.

I do use another brand Priolite they don’t overheating first they are hotsync not HSS. My question to you By looking at your images full noon you are using reflector in front your strobe head no octabox or any diffused device correct? Just curious for getting the most power out of this unit at full 1/1 power it still very difficult to light large groups.

If I can, I use a Rapid Box XL typically as a light modifier. But if I need More light than I can get through that, I just switch to the stock reflector that comes with the AD600. And if That isn’t enough light, I recompose and narrow my aperture until I can get my shutter speed down to 1/250s, which turns off HSS, and effectively doubles my power output. I’ll often do this for wide angle shots, lots of which are shown, 16mm, f9-11, 1/250s, 1/1 flash power unmodified. It takes a lot of power sometimes!

Wes Perry that what I do it really amazing from Las Vegas to Canada We do things that make sense. I’m also buying a leaf shutter camera Leica q or Zeiss XD1 still waiting. My Canon don’t go over 1/200 here in Vegas very difficult. My main box I use Buff 64 umbrella with diffuser and A110 SMDV octabox. With my PRIOLITE not a problem at all.

Hello. Great review! Unfortunately I had some problems with my ad600pro. After updating the firmware to 1.5, the Flash always activates the cooling fans at maximum power despite having the pilot lamp off. I am looking for the old firmware 1.3 or earlier to try the down grade. Do you have any suggestions?

That’s odd. I’m on the latest firmware and haven’t had this issue. I’m not even sure what benefit the latest firmware grants you. I’m not sure how easy it is to downgrade, but even reinstalling the new firmware might help.

You don't need to take the battery off to reset the counter, just switch it off and then off, it's a lame limiter which kicks in regardless of the ambient temperature, but after a while the real temp monitor will kick in

Nah, I tried that at the time, turned it off and on again a few times and it wouldn’t fire. Then as soon as I took the battery off any put it back on it was working again.

Depends whether or not you need TTL! There’s the base non ttl one, the ttl version, and the Pro version with faster recycling (and a couple other bells and whistles)

whats the battery life when using the model light on full. would it last about 4 hours? also i would be using the flash with the model light still on.

With a 74Wh battery, and a 38W modeling lamp, if nothing else ran on this thing, it would last for less than two hours. But given there are electrical heat losses, a fan, and a flash to power, the actual number would be much lower. The modeling lamp shuts itself off about every 5 minutes to prevent you from wearing out the battery. Essentially if you want to use it that way, you’ll be looking at getting the AC power adapter for it (sold separately).

It may be just me - but one thing I noticing is that the flash-tubes do not last that long. Which brings me to another question if anyone has an answer? Will the flash tubes last longer at lower settings? - ie if I start flashing with an ISO of 800 instead of 100 would the flash-tube last longer?

I haven’t had an issue yet myself, but yes, lower power settings will result in longer life.

An easy fix for the overheating problem is to attach a small 5v DC fan to the bottom outside and drill a series of small holes in a small grid on the top. Using 4 AA batteries will run it for days and no overheating.

That wouldn’t do much of anything, unfortunately. The “overheating” is based on the number of shots you’ve fired in succession and power level, not the actual internal temperature. When I’m using it at -30°C, it overheats at exactly the same rate as using it in direct sunlight at +30°C. The overheat time chart is in the manual.

I said anything with a Bowens Mount, not anything. Bowens is a pretty common light modifier standard. Lots of softboxes and dishes available with this Mount.

The trigger isn’t provided with the flash, but there are many to choose from and they aren’t very expensive. You can’t use it while plugged in without buying a separate AC power back that replaces the battery.

For some reason it’s the sold separately extra batteries that seem to have the worst track record. Seems as though they may have made a whole bunch right at the beginning and a lot of them died of self-discharge before they ever made it out to customers. They can usually be revived, but it’s an unfortunately risky procedure. Best to just send it back for a replacement.

Well that just depends if you use TTL. I find it almost useless for outdoor work, when your subject is often a very small part of the frame.

TTL you don’t set the power level yourself (like 1/16 etc), but the flash automatically determines how much power is needed, and you only adjust the exposure compensation (like +0.3, +1.0 etc). When you shoot in manual you choose the power level and it’s always the same until you change it. On the trigger it will say TTL or M in front of the number to indicate which mode you’re using.

Yeah, but it only really works in controlled settings, mostly indoors, where the whole room/whole exposure is being modified by the flash. If you’re flashing only falling on one part of the image (your subject but not the backdrop/surroundings), ttl is very unreliable.

Umm, I hope not! Then you could melt down your expensive flash unit without even knowing! (Something I’ve literally done to SIX Yongnuo speedlights, which don’t have overheating protection circuits).

And, of course, for it to resume functioning faster. It’s running a fan after all, so it shouldn’t take That long.
