The HALO jump scene with the 2001 A Space Odyssey music playing is one of my favorite scenes in a modern film. Gareth Edwards is a very capable director with a great eye for eye candy shots, the fight scenes are exciting and brutal and awesome and the human plot is as serviceable if not a little more than the human plots in early Toho films.

Thanks for pointing out that Godzilla screen time is low in Godzilla movies. I hated that was erebodys big gripe 'not enough Godzilla bro', they did the same thing in the first american movie. They tease until the final fight. Problem with this movie is the lack of fun human characters (like andy said), cranston should have been in it the whole time. Halo drop was dope, las vegas destruction was cool and that rise in water when he comes on the beach so great.

Lack of godzilla isnt bad necessarily, what fucked me off though was that you get multiple shots throughout where youll get a glimpse of godzilla about to do something and then it cuts away. At that point its not building hype towards the final showdown but rather diminishing the impact of anything we do see off it

Bryan Cranston seems like a crazy person in this because he is acting SO PASSIONATELY with dialogue that doesn't make any sense. Still easily the best human character and it's a shame they wasted him. What's the point of killing off his wife if he's seemingly the only person who cared about her and he dies 20 minutes later?

“Do you like Godzilla? Well we have Godzilla!....on a dive diner tv! Do you like MUTO’s?! Well how about watching them thrash a city....wait for it.....through a camcorder!!!!” This movie has moments of really cool shots and artistic choices, brought down by puzzling choices for action scenes. And killing the Cranst off so early, was numbingly stupid.

So to address Kevin’s question about nuclear waste disposal around 49:00, the reason why shooting it into space/the sun is considered too high of a risk because of the potential of the rocket to fail. Space travel is still risky and relatively new in our understanding and there is still the potential of rocket failure. By trying to use a rocket to eject nuclear waste into space, there is the potential for it to come back to us in our atmosphere should the delivery system fail at any point. Then we could potentially face a severely crisis of random nuclear debris falling back to earth without time to address or control. We had an issue a while back in which we had a piece of old space debris that had nuclear material on board that had to be shot at with an F16 to ensure it wouldn’t affect us. Though with that incident, we had time to prepare and make the necessary calculations to react. This is not to defend current disposal methods because we currently have no good solutions at this time for nuclear waste.

For me, I really like that we only see glimpses of Godzilla until we get the "big reveal" it feels like a bunch of little teases leading up to the big moment. The main thing I have an issue with is what everyone else does. The human component of this movie is just boring. They have so many great actors but the focus is on Aaron Taylor Johnson, who is the least capable in the movie. Brian Cranston dying so soon was just a silly call especially after he just finished Breaking Bad and was red hot they just wasted him in this film.

Can't wait to listen to this... I love these movies but I know you're all going to tear these apart 😂 It's been mentioned a few times, but you need to watch Shin-Godzilla (Godzilla resurgence). It's the perfect modern day Godzilla movie, using the titular beast as an allegory for the Fukushima nuclear disaster and prior earthquake. Particularly looking at the almost hilarious hurdles the government have to jump over before taking action. DO NOT WATCH THE DUB! It's terrible and ruins the frantic pace of the human scenes. It's meant to be frantic.

I wrote this back in 2014 when this movie came out: "So, we've got three different kaiju movies on a scale of how they approach the concept. Cloverfield - (Good movie) Really gritty and personal movie all about this group of friends trapped in a city, helping their friend save the girl he loves/their friend, in the midst of the frantic kaiju rampage and military attempt to kill the monster. The movie is all about the people, and the monster is just the hell they're enduring. Pacific Rim - (Fantastic) Straight up action movie, comic book/anime style, a group of beleaguered heroes scraping together a team and resources for a last stand against a kaiju alien invasion. The story is directly humans vs kaiju and how these humans are going to deal with the kaiju. Everything is integrated, everything gets screen time. Godzilla - (Good movie with problems) It tries to mash together the two approaches. There's a Pacific Rim movie happening between Godzilla, the MUTOs, and Ken Watanabe....and then there's Cloverfield happening with Bryan Cranston's family. And in theory that's fine. Hell, in theory that's great... ...except that Pacific Rim is awesome to SEE, and most of the kaiju stuff in Godzilla happened off camera until the end, so the "Pacific Rim" part of the formula is kind of hamstringed....which means the "Cloverfield" part of the formula had to pick up the slack and carry more of the movie. That would've been fine...except that Bryan Cranston was the only member of his family that you cared about, and he dies early in the movie. Cloverfield only works if you care enough about the characters to be worried about them. By killing Bryan Cranston, they sent the message that no one in the movie is safe, and anyone could die because they're not afraid to kill anyone....but when Cranston was the only character you cared about, that doesn't work. You have to have a surviving character or characters who you can be equally invested in and worried about. And that's the catch. Cranston's son (Soldier Guy) wasn't boring when Cranston was alive. Cranston seemed deranged and crazy, and Soldier Guy was the voice of reason trying to reel him back in. You don't realize that he's boring until his dad is gone and that context is gone. Had they kept Cranston alive and killed his son while his son seemed to matter, THAT would've made for a MUCH better movie (and an even more grief-filled, tragedy plagued Cranston, as opposed to just Soldier Guy's "Dang, my estranged weirdo dad was right, and died" sort of non-response...). Soldier Guy would still matter enough at that point in the movie for it to seem like "oh shit, they're willing to kill anyone", and then you go on feeling bad for Soldier Guys wife and son, and worrying about how Cranston will survive. And then Cranston trying to get back to save his son's family after his son died "because of him" would be a compelling plot. Not to mention that keeping Cranston, the scientist who identified that all of this (something huge) was going to happen, being alive gives him a solid reason to hang out with Ken Watanabe - the scientist guy who is actually familiar with Godzilla, who studies and follows Godzilla, and the one other real interesting human in the movie who OBVIOUSLY has a whole lot more fascinating stuff to say, but is never given the chance. Having Cranston and Watanabe traveling with the military and being near the action would still make perfect sense, and Soldier Guy's functions could all be fulfilled by whatever random soldiers happen to be hanging around the area. So yea, you could say it's obvious that the main characters were boring in this movie and there wasn't enough Godzilla, but somehow that's different from putting together how those things correlate, and how it could've been with slight changes. Godzilla could've been the perfect middle ground between Cloverfield and Pacific Rim, but they just did it wrong.

It’s sad. They literally just cashed in on his name, because nobody would have given a shit about the guy who married a woman twice his age, and the Olsen sister nobody knew at the time as the human leads.

This is the only movie I fell asleep to in theaters. I started falling asleep during the train scenes and scared awake by godzillas big roars and screaming and then got immediately blinded by the helicopter lights or whatever

So many boneheaded decisions. Why keep cutting away from Godzilla fights? Why kill Bryan Cranston 40 minutes in? WHY SO LITTLE GODZILLA SCREEN TIME? Other than that ehh it’s a decent movie

yeah my hope with this movie from the trailer was that humans were going to do something (I thought it was going to be climate change/pollution/global warming related) that wakes Godzilla up and, like the trailer evoked, it was going to be more of a horror movie where hes just a force a nature that like "resets" nature by destroying stuff (similar to Shin Godzilla) and returns back to the ocean... but similar to the man of steel trailer... trailers can be deceiving...

I really hate this movie. They made the trailers specifically to make people think they were finally making an American equivalent to the 1954 movie, and it is just shit. Bad performances, too many humans, bait and switches us with Cranston. Americans don't get why Godzilla works over there, and we need to stop trying. Edit: I completely forgot the biggest issue I have with this movie! These movies do not work with Godzilla as a protector to the people. He may be a predator, and drawn to fight things, but purely as a territorial thing. He is a force of nature, a comeuppance for the follies of man and never, ever should be seen as a protector of humans. Humans mean nothing to him. Very much ant's to a human.

@@msmeraglia other than the original, which is master tier for its time, All Out Monsters Attack is my favorite. Does some really cool stuff that is a kaiju battle movie, but also elevates Godzilla to kind of a “more than” ideal.
