No, Bi-Han was always the bad guy. The story was always that Sub Zero slaughtered Hanzo's clan and so Hanzo went to hell and basically became Spawn in order to get revenge. In this movie the same thing happened, but this time Sub Zero did it because of a prophecy stating that Hanzo's bloodline would eventually stop Outworld from invading Earthrealm. The reason you remember ol' Subby Z as being a good guy is because after Scorpion killed him Bi-Han comes back as Noob Saibot and his younger brother takes up the Sub Zero persona. Still though they aren't friends or anything.

Anyone else think that Cole's Arcana was just going to be him being possessed by Scorpion's soul and essentially transforming into him? I thought that that was happening when he first started glowing, but then he just got the weird tree bark sweater thing he wears for the rest of the movie... Think it would've been a way cleaner way of justifying Cole as a new character, as well as "resurrecting" Scorpion.

I feel that the tournament they want so badly to see is closer to the “Thanos” moment in the story. So I think the writers want to build up more hype and bring in more Klassic characters to the story. So by the time we get to the tournament, we’ll have so many more MK characters to see in the tournament. But overall I enjoyed it 👍🏻

This is why The MCU deserves more abuse than it gets. It took a decade to set up something simple and now every movie franchise needs to drag quaint, stupid, blockbuster-level garbage stories out to artificially give them some semblance of “depth.” This film couldn’t even do this, though. They stuck a few anachronistic, weird context-lacking posters and pictures on some walls and called it a day.

It did not take a decade and IW/E were definitely not simple. Thanos didn't show up until 2012 and IW was six years later, and it's a known fact that they didn't plan that far out when making Iron Man. Besides, Endgame is meant to be an endcap and the payoff/emotional impact wouldn't have hit the way it did had those movies come out sooner. And why say goodbye to those characters after only a few years? That would have been ridiculous. That being said, I did find it frustrating to keep getting glimpses of Thanos and not have any clue about what was coming. Unless you're not really a fan of the MCU, I don't know why the 6 year wait would be an issue; there were plenty of movies to enjoy in the meantime. And if you aren't, I don't know why you would care.

I am SHOCKED they liked this movie as much as they seemed too. I mean the fights are cool, fair enough, but there are not nearly enough of them. I'd be fine with the story and writing being as terrible as they are if there was "wall-to-wall action" but there's not. I also disagree with the sentiment that this is as good as a MK movie can get, I think the world of MK is rife with interesting characters and cool stories and this movie shits the bed when it comes to providing those.

In regards to new champions it could be like earth only has lets say 5 dragon marks left but each hero killed someone from outworld that had the mark so their mark went to new heroes of earth which could help explain why outworld would have more champions vs earth. Like Kung Lao kills Nitara but he already has a mark so her mark goes to Johnny Cage then Shange Tsung kills Kung Lao so his mark goes to Sheeva etc.

To clear things up. Both Scorpion and Sub Zero both were tricked by Quan Chi. Scorpion was chilling and Sub Zero killed his people. Gave Scorpion Specter powers to kill Sub-Zero to turn him into Noob Saibot....crazy bs but I love it.

I haven't played mortal kombat since I was a kid on the ps2 and even then it wasn't the mainline series I don't think, either way was hyped because of kinda funny and honestly I enjoyed it. Not great of course but it kept me entertained and kano made me laugh. Thought setting the tournament up for the sequel was smart. Also teasing but not showing Johnny Cage was cool. Looking forward to a sequel. Also when the theme kicks in for the scorpion subzero fight?! Who wouldn't get hyped!

So the beef between Shirai Ryu and the Lin Kuei was going on for a while, and Hanso didn’t really do bad stuff until being killed by Sub Zero since he went to the Netherrealm and becomes Scorpion all in the name of revenge. Sub-Zero is more of a title than just a name for the leader of the Lin Kuei. The Black Dragon is an organization run by Kano which is basically just a group that does super illegal stuff. Kabal was also part of this group. I honestly think the Arcana stuff fits in really well because it actually explains why people have abilities. Like the fact that Sonya can shoot arm beams makes no sense in the games along with plenty of other characters. I will say that Jax’s ability makes zero sense. It makes no sense that someone’s “power” is to upgrade their metal arms. They really called in the C team with Natara who was the lady with wings, and General Raiko are super insignificant in the stories. There’s a moment when team Outworld visits Raiden’s temple and Lui Kang gives an extended stare to Mileena. This is because Mileena is Kitana’s sister/clone. Though I don’t know if this movie takes place before or after Kitana, and Lui meet. The movies play fast and loose with the ranks of gods. In the games, Raiden is a protector of Earthrealm. Above him are the Elder Gods and above them are Titans. This movie depicts Raiden as an Elder God which is a rank above what he really is. Obviously in Annihilation he ascends to be an elder god. No one in MK is ever really dead. A lot of the time people die and they just get taken to netherrealm where they could possibly come back. There are hundreds of ways the games explain away the return of people. There’s a 100% chance that Nick Scarpino will pronounce names whatever way he wants despite those names being spoken repeatedly in a movie. When Sub Zero removes his armor and his clothing is all black it does seem to be a reference to him becoming Noob with all his skin blackened by the burns. Noob Saibot is a combination Ed Boon and John Tobias’s names backwards. They are the original creators of MK. There was a video of Martial Artists reacting to MK and they try to do the bicycle kick and I believe they could get 4-5 kicks in. Cole Young looks like he’s 19, so he was probably 3 when he had his daughter. Kevin’s story about freezing people and removing hearts is crazy shit.

I don't know, personally, I think the Mortal Kombat universe has so much potential that to say this is the best a Mortal Kombat movie could be is underselling the mythos. There's so much room for this series to soar that I know it could reach with a better writer. Get a better writer and you'll have a franchise in the same vein as a Star Wars or an MCU. I love Mortal Kombat and I know this series has the potential for greatness. This movie needs to do better. Totally going to watch the sequel though. There's still time for this series. for me MK 1995 was a better movie in term of action... idk, in that the punches and kicks felt a bit heavier, like they were actually doing damage, here it just felt like they were doing some nicely stylized choreographs. Also, the whole Scorpion speaking Japanese, then switches to English just for the Scorpion fan service and then back to Japanese, to talk to Cole, who probably didn't understand a thing. Also, what's the point of having the music in only for 2 seconds... even MK Annihilation got that right.

Every masked character in that movie was a fight choreographer, and so was Liu. They went heavy in to investing into making the fights feel right. This movie has Subzero and Scorpion. Even Liu and Kung Lao in this didn't get to showcase much of their fighting skills. The one real fight Kung Lao got in, he didn't even fight. He jumped on a things back and it faceplanted lol.

I just don't understand how the games have such a deep, an interesting lore, and they managed to screw it up this much. Either way, I love Kano, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero. Sonya and Kung Lao were the only other characters I enjoyed. Everyone else was trash. The choreography was really good at times, the other times really bad. And the editing in the fights, holy hell. Awful. When are American filmmakers going to learn, that when you're doing martial arts films, to use wide shots, and less cuts. It's more engaging that way. Chad gets that, and that's his John Wick films look so damn good. And the dialogue.... oh man. Cole was a total fucking waste. There's like a hundred characters in MK, and the made an OC for the starring role. If they wanted a newbie in the role, it should've been Johnny Cage, or Curtis Stryker. And I hated Goro. He looked great, but he was nothing more than a brain dead brute. How tf is animatronic from the 90's better? This is a like a hard 5 out of 10 for me. Honestly, MK should just be a big budget tv show. The fatalities were pretty sick though.

Im sure the sequel will dive deeper into the tournament aspect but they should look how Mk 9 through 11 handle the lore and make it more interesting going forward.

Spent the last couple weeks watching EVERYTHING mortal Kombat including Conquest + Legacy.... and the lore is really rich.... Its kind of disappointing that they never really explain the importance of winning the tournament for EarthRealm. Also, Goro was such an important character and they just used him as a generic monster who goes out like a B. With Raiden being the protector of earthrealm (and in this movie : an "Elder God" ), ... you would think that he would try a little harder to protect his fighters (and the rules of MK) than just putting up a force-field and not showing up again until one of earth's greatest warriors is killed after Shang Tsung violates the rules of THE ELDER GODS.....There was NO point of Raiden being in this movie.

This definitely felt like somebody’s first movie, because it makes no god damn sense. Terrible fights when anybody but Scorpion or Subzero are fighting, god awful dialogue, and nonsensical everything. Raiden was fucking pointless, Sonya is there just to scream, Jax and his baby arms couldn’t fight and the dude he ended up paired against was even worse, Cole was completely uninteresting and had a power that he gets beat up real good, Lui was a fucking weirdo, and Kano was fucking ruined with no actual purpose or reason. All the outworld fighters just get owned. Shang Tsung was the most bland performance, and the dude with the hammer was by far the worst actor I have ever seen, and I don’t think he even ever spoke. At least Annihilation was funny in how seriously bad it was. Like The Room or something. This was just fucking awful. Except the opening fight, that was dope as fuck, but has also been shown way too much to make it hit the way it needed to.

I liked Cole more than I thought I would. Powering up by taking damage and the club/blade combo earns him a DLC spot. His family can skip the sequel, though. But the arcanas I just straight up liked as a super basic conceit to explain the superpowers. I was also bummed about Johnny Cage being left out, but now that makes sense. Kano was the comic relief here, and Johnny's ready to fill that spot next time.

I thought all the bad guys except Kabal were pretty forgettable tbh, wjere as Shang Tsung from the OG movie was over acting in the best way and flared his nostrils to superhuman levels for dramatic effect! This is certainly better than annihilation, but for me, it was absolutely no fun unless it involved Kano or some of the cool fatalities. I liked it, but it felt too much like set up for the sequels to me. Also Cole sucks and game movies need to realize that we don't need a new character to "introduce viewers to the story." If you tell the story well it will work. Overall for me, a bit boring and too long, and Cole is the most milk toast character ever omg, but some fights were awesome and the fatalities were well done. Scorpion and Sub Zero stuff was perfect though.

Raiden was a waste of space and could of used the void to train them ready for the so called tournament. The start of the movie really set the bar high but the fights afterwards was lackluster. Even the final fight cole trying to punch his family out when scorpion just been frozen half way up his body , but 2 seconds before that they was both tag teaming sub zero. I think over all this movie could of been alot better but the writer for his first project you can tell . Plus having the guy who wrote wonder women 1984 back the new writer shows the inconsistency within the story beats.

The Get Hype moments in this movie were spot on. I realized what was going to happen when they started getting beat up and then by the time everyone was getting their arcana I was cheering at the screen.
