I still have my fingers crossed that the Legendary Pictures movies utilize animatronics at some point in the future. Their CG work is still top notch, but there's something about the tangibility of a hand crafted model that makes a monster seem that much more lifelike.

@@rogue7723 Give it a look. IMO is the best Gojira movie since the 1954 original. It's still a monster movie but really turned more toward the "horror" side. I love it. It's a shame that Toho left it without sequels. I could have been a new fantastic cycle for the franchise.

Even though the hate toward "Godzilla 1998" *is* understandable, I personally feel it's a SHAME that the hate completely drowns out the film's usage of practical, animatronic effects. They may not have been on the exact same level as animatronics built by say, Stan Winston Studio or Legacy Effects, but IMO, the animatronics for "Godzilla 1998" were still competently done and were pulled off well. You look at behind-the-scenes videos of them being built and tested (like here), you can see that genuine artistry and craftsmanship went into them. *Say what you will* about "Godzilla 1998," but I feel the efforts of the special effects artists behind its animatronic effects should at least be recognized.

1998 Godzilla is actually quite beautiful, as a creature design. I was nine years old when that film came out, and I loved it. Even if it is objectively a bad film, I kind of want to watch it as an adult just for the nostalgia value. That Jamiroquai song from the credits is still awesome though. Also, Shin Godzilla is *so* unsettling!

I actually own part of the animatronic 1998 Godzilla in my collection. I have the rubber skin of the left hand. No mechanical components or the claws as those are in Sony's backlot, just the rubber skin of the hand. It's like 4 feet give or take and somewhat heavy. I got it along with a few other props from the film (fiberglass interior of one of the suit's heads, a miniature egg, and a reference sculpt of one of the claws) from someone close to the production. I know it's not the most loved movie in the world but it has an odd place in my heart as I collect anything and everything Godzilla related. The animatronics and suitmation effects methods used by these films are so wonderful and charming.

That one from Shin Godzilla is TERRIFYING! I have never seen it before! Though, wouldn't "shin" mean "new" in this case? Especially considering the new approach they took to both the way they created the monster and to it's origins in the story. Not to mention the title was translated as "Resurgence" in some countries, which would relate to "new" to an extent? Not to mention, "Shin (something)" is often used for reboot names in japanese creations, as in "the new version of" whatever that is. Anyway, it is both the scariest (or really, only scary one) and my favorite. I don't think any other version could compare to it now that I've seen it - be it animatronic or CGI. EDIT: oh I forgot: definitely team Godzilla, considering I always hated all forms of monkeys and apes, aside from lemurs. So yeah... Kong... nope.

No it’s not. It’s an even more exaggerated version of the 1954 concept (in a good way). Since the original was meant to look like he was covered in keloid scars and burns from radiation, Shin was meant to be that way but at an even harsher level, with even more extreme burns and damage, and overall more disfigurement. It fits just fine. As well as the movie’s inspiration from the Fukushima disaster that took place several years before. That and the red reveal poster from late 2015 of his head was legit scary as shit with that freakish grin and all those teeth passing his eye. That’s the stuff of nightmares. 😅
