Toho is back with a new Godzilla movie! Here's what I had to say about it right after leaving the theater. No spoilers here, but I do talk about some things later in the video, so proceed with caution! A more official review will come sometime next year, I hope. :)
HUGE thanks to everyone who helps support the channel at ko-fi.com/weiselberry!

Godzilla in Japan is essentially half God and half Monster. There is no reason for Godzilla to appear, just as there is no reason for a hurricane or a huge earthquake to occur. The horror of this walking nuclear disaster is well expressed in this film. The battleships and fighter planes that appear are real. I was surprised to see the appearance of the heavy cruiser Takao, the lucky ship Yukikaze, and the mythical fighter Shinden. I would like to express my respect to the director.

I saw it last night. My best friend and I went out to dinner and caught an evening screening. It was AMAZING! I think it's the most well made Godzilla movie of the entire franchise. Blasphemous, though it may be, it honestly might surpass the 1954 original in my estimation. In terms of overall enjoyment/entertainment, it's probably my favorite Godzilla movie. It's certainly the most realistic and relatable Godzilla movie ever made. And the first Godzilla movie i ever got emotionally invested in. Never thought I'd be shedding a few tears during a Godzilla movie, but I certainly was. It's phenomenal. I'm hesitant to say it's a perfect 10/10... So, to quote the 90s Ninja Turtles, "9.95!!!"

I saw it yesterday (Dec. 26) and was very impressed by it. Yes, I had two or three “dicing onions” moments while watching it. And speaking of water, the quite numerous underwater shots were so well made (both visually and in terms of sound effects) that I found myself almost tasting, feeling, and smelling salt water. (I live in Florida and used to go to the beach a lot. I’ll refrain from discussing the one time I brushed against a jellyfish. Ouch.)

I saw the movie tonight also. It's a human drama first (a very good one) and a Godzilla movie second. The acting and story was superb. The Godzilla scenes were intense. The meanest Godzilla yet. Interesting ending with one of the main characters too.

I have just come back from the cinema seeing Godzilla Minus One, and I share your enthusiasm. I have been a fan of Godzilla films since my parents took me to see my first one in 1963 and had long accepted the fact that Godzilla was a man in a rubber suit, but now technology has convinced me that CGI is the way to go. I also think this was my first time seeing the Toho logo on something other than my TV...!!! It was nostalgic and enjoyable to hear the Akira Ifukube themes, very appropriate but I think the crowd I was with in the cinema didn't recognize the connection because I didn't hear anyone say Ahhhh, or comment. And yes, I had a few tears creeping up on me and I was very impressed by the young actress playing Akiko! I was amused by the reporters on top of the building when Godzilla first comes ashore as it reminded me of the reporter in the original 1954 film who was broadcasting from the Tokyo Tower; I noticed a few parallels to the original film. I also noticed that not once was the name Gojira used!!! Thank you Jerome for your reviews and joy of Godzilla movies.
@christopherjohnson2422
@christopherjohnson2422 7 ай бұрын
I recall hearing the word “Gojira” in the Japanese dialogue, although the subtitles consistently rendered the word as “Godzilla.“ As for the Ifukube score, probably only folks who are really into Godzilla would recognize it. Ifukube, by the way, paid the bills by scoring kaiju movies, but also wrote rather good symphonic concert music, and also scored the haunting and sensitive antiwar film “The Burmese Harp” (1956).

I remember when you first started reviewing the Toho films and to see you now so invested, a genuine fan who loves and understands the franchise be so happy after seeing this film is very heartwarming, I’m so glad you loved the film and had a great time at the theatre. The chat with your dad about the film not being in English was very funny lol I’m glad he enjoyed it too and I’ve no doubt you being so happy and excited was a major reason for it. I unfortunately have to wait until the 15th of December to see it because that’s its release date here unless I can find an earlier preview screening. I’m much more excited to see the film now after hearing all the positive things you’ve had to say about it. I hope you enjoyed your late lunch :) ~ Thank you Ms Weiselberry ~

I'll be seeing it for the tenth time tommorrow, I've never seen a movie more than three times in the theatre. I just really enjoy the movie, it pretty much does exactly what I've wanted out of a Godzilla movie. I've brought someone different with me in most of my screenings and all enjoyed it, some even saw it again with me. I believe it for these reasons that the movie has gone on to be such a massive success.

The media in the UK are screaming to the public to see this before it leaves the big screen! Only thing holding this back is age rating, but people have sneaked in kids- who have loved it and said that subtitles never put them off! But children said that it was emotional and hadn't realised that Godzilla was a baddie! Yet want to watch again!

I've been a Godzilla fan since I was a kid in the 1960s, and this Godzilla movie blew me away! Toho hit a home run with this, and I get chills when I think of what this means for the Godzilla franchise. It was also made for only slightly more than the original STAR WARS, which I saw right before my 16th birthday in May of 1977. Godzilla Minus One is as close to perfect as a movie can get. RUN to the theatre, and see this movie, preferably in IMAX.

Now I' exited to see this! The post-war setting in Japan has made for some great heart-rending cinema. The animated films Barefoot Gen, Grave of the Fireflies, and In This Corner of the World come to mind. If you don't shed a tear during these you are not human. The aftermath of Godzilla's attack as portrayed in Gojira 1954 is a glimpse of this realistic attitude.

This was the best Godzilla film ever, even better than the original Japanese version which was a masterpiece. Godzilla films have certainly ran the full spectrum from serious to downright silly. This was not silly but a very respectful return to the original's deep and disturbing reflections on was and disaster. Jerome your obvious delight with this movie showed in your face while you reviewed it and millions of us share in that same delight. Good review, you covered it well as always. Love your channel!

One thing I wanted to mention. For Godzilla day back in the beginning of November last month, "Godzilla 2000" was re-released where I am. This time, the original Japanese language version was shown with English subtitles. I saw "Godzilla 2000" when it was released back in 2000 and it was the English dub version. This Japanese language release was much better, and it was like I was watching it for the first time.

One of the many things a dad can share with his kids is a great theatrical experience. I was lucky and introduced my sons to LOTR and the Raimi Spidermen. Godzilla took me back to old school black and white horror/monster flicks. There’s a lot going in with this version and can improved by watching this with a good sound system inside a theater.

Minus One was excellent loved the emotional aspect of the film it was really strong and had you care about the characters and Godzilla was so brutal in it, his attack had my spine chill. You know I haven't been to the movie theater in years, but I just came back from watching a matinee of this movie and I am really glad I saw it in the theater. The sound was amazing but it wasn't until near the end when they started playing that classic Godzilla theme that I really felt like I was seeing a Godzilla movie. The movie was great and even the movie going experience was great. There were only about 15 of us and everyone was quiet, concentrating on the subtitles I suppose. Jerome, we need to have a watch party. I want to see it again with you.

I saw it in a pretty crowded matinee showing-only the seats way in back and way down front were empty. I did see a fair amount of getting up and leaving, possibly just for bathroom breaks, and a guy next me whipped out his phone during the movie. But as a whole, the movie did seem to hold the audience, even if the second act (for me) seemed to drag a bit.

I did the same as you, avoided everything except the trailers and that was a great thing. Toho blew my doors off, to put it nicely. The acting was convincing, the characters were likable and relatable, the cinematography and camera work is excellent, the VFX are also excellent considering the tiny budget of this movie (approximately $15 million USD!), the music fit perfectly, the story is relatable and eye opening in regards to showing how things were for the Japanese immediately after WWII--I sensed more commentary on the inefficiency of the Japanese government in this one like in "Shin Godzilla" as well. In short, it was brilliant and the perfect balance of monster mayhem and human drama, and to me, it's the best Godzilla movie of my lifetime.

I saw it Thursday late afternoon and loved it. I agree with most of what you said. Other than the main, most famous Godzilla themes, I don't really notice if other music was the same. There are many things to say about the movie, but as you said it's hard to talk about without giving something away so hopefully you'll do a spoiler review later and then we can all talk about this in more detail. You didn't really mention that this also deals with PTSD some. A big theme of this movie is "responsibility and obligation". Can't really say more about that either. A couple of other things that I can say that this is definitely one movie in which you are not rooting for Godzilla. This movie makes you dislike him intensely. The other is that the budget was, apparently, one tenth that of Godzilla vs. Kong. However the movie was nearly ten times better. One of my favorite G movies - hard to put a ranking on it just now. I also had some tears running down my cheek.

This movie had everything the legendary films have been missing. Saw this movie the night after it released. I was super excited about this movie. Like you mentioned, the atomic breath was absolutely incredible. Loved the intensity of the destruction the breath created. This movie in general was completely different from any other Godzilla movie we've seen. His demeanor and actions towards Japan showed his rage and aggression towards the people. I unfortunately didn't get a chance to go back and catch the Minus Color version of the movie. I'm hoping that when it comes out on Blu-ray, that it will have both the color and minus color versions of the film. And with the end credit sound clip of him stomping closer and closer getting louder and louder with each stomp, gave me the feeling that when he regenerated, he was much larger than before. Did you or anyone else get that same impression?

I have watched all of your Godzilla movie reviews and this is the first time that I have seen you so excited, happy and practically beside yourself! The film's soundtrack is truly amazing. I do hope the soundtrack gets released over here in the U.S. There are two companies, MONDO and WAXWORK RECORDS, that sell Godzilla 33 LP vinyl album soundtracks. I don't want to give away any spoilers of the film either. However, you were questioning Godzilla's spikes on its back. I have read and been told that they are called "dorsal fins". What makes a "perfect" movie? It's such a subjective, personal thing. It's 5:12am in the Midwest where I live, and while most Americans are either early birds that are having their first cup of coffee, or are blissfully still snoring, I have been up all night doing laundry. I fired up KZbin and told myself that if I dip into any reviews for "Godzilla: Minus One" I could control myself and not start furiously typing my frantic thoughts about it. It's all your fault, Jerome Weiselberry. I should have known better and not opened your review in particular for fear it might trigger that typing frenzy. But I couldn't resist, and about halfway through the video your elation and infectious giddiness about it was such a mirror to my own soaring heart that I dragged out my laptop and portable keyboard and here I am. Trying to think back, there have only been about five movies that met my personal standard for "perfect". One is "Jaws", second is "Alien", third would be "Aliens", fourth is "I Saw the Devil". And I am so delighted that last night I saw the fifth. "Godzilla: Minus One" is actually perfect for two reasons. As a movie in general, and as a Godzilla film. I'm going to deal primarily with the latter. You're a kindred spirit as a Godzilla fan. You have the same rush of nostalgia and warmth for his movies, but every element and trope was addressed and dealt with powerfully. Takashi Yamazaki has achieved the nearly impossible and created the closest to my dreams of what a Godzilla film would be. We both know that for casuals and hardcore fans of G alike, the human interactions are often time to tune your mind to a different frequency and think about tonight's dinner or go grab a snack. The characters and human drama here are deft, moving, funny, and crowd-pleasing. I would say the events moved me to tears, but I spent almost the entire time in either tears of sorrow or tears of joy when very early on I realized what was here was going to be that rare diamond of a perfect film. Our trajectories to this movie are similar in many ways. I also carefully avoided spoilers for it and took a family member that was dear to me but worried a bit how they were going to react to it. One thing is certain: after seeing what Mr. Yamazaki managed to accomplish with a 15-million-dollar budget, Hollywood with its bloated budgets and wastefulness should hang its head in shame. Every dollar was on screen. Your description of "perfectly balanced" is so apt. Too much CGI mayhem and you get "Godzilla VS Kong". Don't misunderstand- I like that movie, but it had a terrible script, and its fun comes mainly from having that rush of getting all the G you wanted and more. But the axiom of "too much of a good thing" applies, and a film can overdose on too much destruction spectacle. You also well know that for G fans, it's always fun to see with each offering what new twists are in store for his design elements and demeanor. I dearly love the 1954 film. It started it all. But with more reflection, this may be the most frightening Godzilla that's ever been created. Because this movie has the power to invest you, his gait and his tail swings and his burning malicious eyes exude menace. Even though "Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack" had G create a mushroom cloud after his atomic breath blasts, this film amplified the jaw-dropping power and blast wave in spectacular fashion. When that blue luminescence began at the tip of the tail, it was scary and thrilling to prepare for what was coming. It was a brilliant stroke to set this in post-war Japan. It was so confident that the story it was telling was important, I think edits that removed all trace of G would still result in a satisfying and moving film. I lose interest in movies quickly when through laziness or sloppiness too many inconsistencies and contradictions pile up. It very adroitly married Kōichi Shikishima's pain, guilt, and PTSD because of events to see why he looked upon this horror that was assaulting an entire shell-shocked nation as a personal penance that he's forced to pay. His agony over losses he repeatedly suffers becomes our pain. There were no missteps of characterization or acting ability. It deftly grasped multiple threads to form a central narrative thrust that made this film a unique experience. There are laughs, surprises, terror, and a deep love of the human spirit and our indomitable will to survive even when the things before our eyes defy belief. To close I'll wrap up with this: when this film is released on disc, I look forward to wearing out the mechanism of my Blu-ray player from my repeated spinning of "Godzilla: Minus One". To the other fans of Jerome and fans of G- don't wait. Rush to see this amazing "perfect" jewel of cinema while it's here on the big screen. Thanks for your review of this great film. I thought yesterday and was blown away. For me, it reminds me a lot of another film you reviewed some time ago "The Best Years of Our Lives" insofar as both films reflected on the outcomes of World war II. There are tons of war films, but, I feel a shortage of films that are reflective on the outcomes of those conflicts.

Such an INCREDIBLE movie. I'm beyond happy to have seen it on a big screen, haven't bothered going since John Wick 4 was out. I'm adding it to my blu-ray collection!! Love your reviews and that epic t-shirt, which I also own but can't seem to find... 😭

Ms. J, I just came back from seeing this movie. It was one of the greatest films I have ever seen. A society traumatized, in ruins and trying to recover; superb differentiation of characters; superb editing and sound track; a Cloverfield quality to the monster's first appearance; and profound, TRUE emotion. And what a perfect and TRUE love story. God, I cried at times like a baby. The regeneration aspects; the plan to defeat it; and the Dunkirk tugboat scene, with the great "male bonding" scenes; and finally the former destroyer Captain achieving redemption. And here comes the kamikaze pilot, to save the day! By the way, I'm a Navy geek, and have since discovered that both the heavy cruiser and the named destroyer existed! What a superb experience! ❤️❤️❤️

Does it make "scientific sense"? A Japanese language movie starring a gigantic, mutated lizard with atomic breath? NO Miss Weiselberry! But you clearly had a great time. Your enthusiasm is infectious. Is there any chance that the Hollywood studios will pay attention? Three cheers for your Dad being such a good sport. Once again, you've brightened up the day! Excelsior!

I just got back from seeing Godzilla Minus One. I decided to watch the last showing Sunday night (12/3/23 for the record) and I was the only person in the theater. Overall I loved the movie. Hearing the theme on a powerful surround sound system was awesome. I must have missed the king kong v godzilla theme, I'll have to listen for it next time. I have a few quibbles only one I will mention as the others could be spoilers. It was probably a mistranslation, but they kept saying jet fighter when the planes were obviously propeller driven. I liked how Godzilla's spines act like control rods in a nuclear reactor before he fires his breath. And his heat ray makes him the most destructive Godzilla ever. This is the first time I wanted Godzilla to die. Also thank you for reminding me that this was a limited release. Also I didn't realize it was subtitled though that wasn't a big deal to me. Seeing the Toho logo on the big screen was an absolute thrill.

Well, I saw G -1 this afternoon. As much as enjoyed Toho's last effort, Shin Godzilla, this film is better in almost every way. The "suit" design (reminiscent of Heisei Godzilla but gnarlier), the visual effects, and especially the human characters, are all superior. I won't say much about story details, but I will say that I just might catch it another time or two while it's still in theaters. It's worth several viewings. (I also have a questions about the ending.) Thanks, JW for all you do. You're a treasure.

On another review site someone mentioned that Godzilla was like a nuclear reactor which made me think that his spines popping out was like the control rods being removed from a reactor core.

Something I really liked about the movie is that Godzilla actually feels the firepower as it hits him. He's not the big, lumbering wall who is virtually unaware of anything coming at him, but actually feels it as he's knocked around when the destroyers hit him more like a real creature. The scene where part of his face is blasted away by the magnetic mine and he floats there like a dead whale makes more sense. I always wondered why they never tried detonating something more powerful in a vulnerable part of his body. It's reminisce of GMK. The other part is when Godzilla uses his atomic breath, but can't constantly use it because he actually burns up parts of his mouth during the blast, almost as if he feels pain.

A Great Movie that happens to have Godzilla in it. What makes this so much better than previous versions is the acting and the staging. When there were meetings to discuss what to do, there was empathy for what the attendees had just been through. One of my son's friends bought a date and she was crying. Crying at a Godzilla Movie. My families new Christmas Movie! And I loved the Captain!

The way your describing the movie, it sounds like its as good as the original Gojira! Now you peaked my curiosity and I might just see it soon! 😊😊 Edited: I watched this movie today and it's by far the best movie of this year. I cried twice, and it was just amazing! Btw did you notice in a certain part of the score, they played a rendition of Kongs song from King Kong vs Godzilla from the 1960s? I'm so glad I saw this when I did!!!

If you want to see it in the theater, you'll have to go soon! I guess it was originally slated to play for one week only, but it performed so well that they extended it for a second week. But I think Thursday will be the last day, unless they extend it again.
