The battleships that appear in this movie are actually battleships owned by the Japanese military and have a history of being active in World War II. The destroyer Yukikaze, which was used in the final operation, was famous as a lucky ship during the war. During World War II, it sailed more than 16 sorties on important operations. The war ended without suffering any major damage. So, with the appearance of "Yukikaze", military fans knew that this operation would be successful. The fighter aircraft "Shinden" piloted by Kirishima is also an interceptor aircraft that was actually developed in Japan at the time. Although Godzilla-1.0 does change historical facts, it takes a lot of effort to figure out how to fight Godzilla with Japan's remaining military strength in 1947, and even introduces a phantom weapon that will excite military fans. They are showing off their bravery with one goal: to protect own country.

Shikishima's story was one of redemption. He was twice a coward who could have made a difference, and had to live with the consequences of his failures until he had lost everything, and it was then that he finally stood up and became the hero. I thought the use of the Shinden fighter was a cool little historic artifact that they dug up that fit perfectly with not only the plotline, but the historic timeline. True story, there were only 2 ever built, one was destroyed and one is in the Smithsonian. I believe the one used in the hangar scenes in the movie might have been the full scale replica that can be found in the Peace Museum in Japan.
@connorgrynol902110 ай бұрын
I disagree. It wasn’t about redemption, it was about learning to fight for life. As a Kamikaze pilot, he was expected to die for duty. But in the film, he needed to learn to fight to live.

Everyone should look into the history of the Yukikaze destroyer (ship our heroes are on). Its fascinating, it had a bad luck reputation. That was a great review! I couldn't see it early because of work and will be catching it the first chance I get on an IMAX on my way back tomorrow. But I wanted to get a feel for what people thought without ruining the surprises I had left after the trailers and TV spots. Really nice job on the impact more than the scene by scene descriptions so I could get my fix and still have something to look forward to. I'm in my 50s and saw the TOHO Godzilla in theaters as a kid. No matter how cheesy I freaking LOVED IT and let my imagination make it seem more realistic than the actual product. That said, we've had some very close calls with the Monsterverse films and Shin Godzilla so it sounds like I'm finally going to get the Godzilla experience for real that I always had in my imagination. We in turn introduced our kids (now teens) to Godzilla at a very young age and they too are die hard loyal fanatics. My son and nephew know everything about the movies and different eras. I have never cried during any Godzilla film. I have never been too invested in any of the characters except for Mothra. I have never wanted Godzilla to lose in any film. He was the most terrifying, most merciless, most unforgiving Godzilla ever. The story was so captivating and had everyone emotionally invested. There was not one dry eye in the theater. Nobody cries during a Godzilla movie! If you’re a fan you will not be disappointed. If you’re not a fan you will not be disappointed. There’s a reason why this movie is trending and being hailed as one of if not the best movies of the year. The reviews by die hard fans and first time viewers are predominantly positive and are not at all what you’d expect to hear about a Godzilla movie. Epic. Masterpiece. Brilliant. Great. I saw it last night (on Wednesday in the fan event ) and it was FANTASTIC To see hear and be emotional in which my review of the film which I wrote at 12 pm at night is in my insta however I will post my review here in this comment Survive and Live, wow, what a fantastic movie, and I’m not saying because it is a Godzilla film but because it is one of the very few Godzilla films with a humanitarian message. I was highly impressed by the performances of Kamiki Ryunosuke and Minami Hamabe; Kamiki played the role of Koichi Shikishima, a post-war Japanese kamikaze pilot who finds a family along with Noriko Oishi, whom Minami played, and their acting was fantastic. Watch with scenes of drama, a heart that emphasizes their performances to a whole another level in which I hope they get nominated and as well this film for the acting alone because everyone in the movie feels very impactful to the story, even the little girl actress who played Akiko played by Saki Nakatani was terrific with her little amount of screen time and acting ability was so endearing to see her alongside her parents in this story of SURVIVAL. I was also very impressed by the CGI. They did not mess around in seeing a Godzilla film on the big screen for a sizable chunk of this film. He feels scary and threatening not only because of his power but also because the way he moves and attacks is horrific in the best possible way. I am not a fan of horror movies, but this was a very intense Thriller horror action film. I was on the Edge of my seat, hoping our characters would SURVIVE & LIVE. Omg the action scenes. While there is a good chunk of this film, the action scenes pay off, making the threat of Godzilla Rampaging dangerous. If this were a real-world scenario, having everyone run to seek safety while tanks shoot at Godzilla would be chaotically scary. The cinematography, omg was awe-inspiring to see. I commend Takashi Yamazaki for this fantastic film. The way he directed the film with charisma and the weight of the plot's structure is incredible. It talks about a subject that even the US wouldn’t discuss (no, it's not Godzilla-related). Still, the deactivation of 60,000 mines in the sea wasn’t the Americans who deactivated them; it was ordinary people. Some ex-military would do this work “FOR THEIR FUTURE” to live in a Japan free of war and reconstruction of Japan. This film does give you some historical accuracy about the politics (before Godzilla's appearance in the movie) of the U.S.S.R. and the U.S., who were doing their cold war before it even began, and how the economy in Japan wasn’t the best at that time. The music is masterfully written and given to the shrine with the film's most emotional scenes (which I won't give away anything). Still, it's a beautiful artistic masterpiece, given that 2 of the songs are re-renditions of the classic themes from the classic films. However, the music's weight in the drama, the character arcs, and even the calmest happy moments are emotionally driven. And when the film ends, you may shed some tears over this masterpiece. This was a fantastic watch, not only a Godzilla film but a war/family/drama/horror/thriller film that keeps you on the edge of your seat, waiting for what will come. It will give you chills if there’s anything negative to say about this film; there wasn’t any. I found this to be a perfect, fantastic film. I would love to see a physical release with a Godzilla mini-bust referencing the Red Carpet premiere in Japan. However, in all seriousness, the film is masterfully paced, and I would love for this film crew to return for a sequel in any way, shape, or form. Congratulations, Takashi; you and your crew made a beautifully fantastic film with a profound core message of SURVIVE AND LIVE that everyone can live up to. To push forward even when times are rough and scary is a resounding message that was beautiful to hear and see. SURVIVE AND LIVE I give Gojira Minus One a 10/10 and 1000 ♾️ to the best message I’ve seen.

It’s crazy the difference in production costs between WB and Toho and yet they can still make the superior film. Incredible!

My co workers invited me to watch this movie and I was like “eh, I ain’t really a fan but I’ll go just to go”…. Didn’t think I was going to end up liking the movie. The movie was just perfect. Highly recommend watching if you ain’t never seen Godzilla or not a fan of it. Still ain’t a fan of it but I admire this movie’s story.

Great film. I was originally iffy on going to see the film as I don’t the speak the language but after watching your review I gave it a try. Man I was wrong. I was left emotionally stunned by the story of the film. Great human element and Godzilla had a bunch of screen time as well that both kept me engaged throughout the film. I don’t even speak the language and that was one of the best films of the year for me honestly.

Good thing I grew up watching movies with subtitles. I can watch and read at the same time. Hahah

Finally got to see it today in the UK and as a lifelong Godzilla fan, I LOVED it! I'm glad that you finally got to experience what us G fans love and in my opinion, Toho have always been the standard bearer of Godzilla films. The US films (excluding 98) are fun, but you can't beat an authentic Japenese take on Godzilla.

Embarrased to say ive never seen a Godzilla film not even the recent ones so all this praise is cool to hear, would this be a good start for someone who has never seen one?

I loved the intro Chris lol in all honestly though , I heard a lot of good things about the film & I’ve been wanting to see it but I was hesitant waiting for your input on it to determine wether or not I check it out but it looks like I’ll be giving it a watch! Thank you for the review Chris & I hope whoever sees this has a great rest of their evening. ❤

Always killing it with the reviews 3c! Loved this movie, so weird that I was going into the cinema to see Godzilla beat some ass but came out thinking the humans were the best part haha.

just figured out what the title means. the minus one means that it's one less Godzilla to deal with. but at the end, when Godzilla was sinking there was a pulse, indicating that he's regenerating and so, with the 2nd Godzilla movie coming up, it's going to be titled Godzilla Minus Two, when they kill Godzilla off again.
