In this era, is it possible for four generations of a family to watch the same movie and share an emotional experience? Yes, they have made such a movie. It was not a Disney movie, but a Godzilla movie.

@@Ishma3l Japan didn't choose this film. Instead, they chose Perfect Days from Wim Wenders. Countries are only allowed to submit 1 film for consideration. That's why Anatomy of a Fall is also not nominated in that category (because France chose another film). Japan was spoiled with choice because they also could have gone with The Boy and the Heron.

I just watched it today. What surprised me the most is that even though it can be really dark and bleak, the message of valuing life and hope in the end is honestly so good. Movies like this usually have like a triple plot twist of the plan failing, or blowing up in the protagonists face, and now the monster is stronger and this and that, and this movie doesn't do that because it understands it doesn't need to, and it allows its characters to celebrate respite and small victories. It is great.

This is the first “foreign film” I’ve seen in theaters, mostly due to my hesitance with subtitles, and I’m so glad I started with this one, as I genuinely think it’s a solid contender for best film of the year. It shocked me how much I loved this film, and plan on seeing it again while it’s still in theaters.

If you're still on a Godzilla kick, you should really watch Shin-Godzilla subtitled. When that came out in 2016 it became my favorite Godzilla movie of all time. The human element is pretty great in this one too, but it's not really as focused or emotional as Minus One. Instead, it takes a look at the government, bureaucracy, and its weaknesses in dealing with the natural disasters preceding the film, as well as an interesting look at Japan's relationship with the US and people who stand out from a seemingly homogenous society. Godzilla himself has some interesting changes and twists that make him terrifying and a force that must be stopped. I think this is the best way to give you context for what you will see without spoiling anything, so recap- government bureaucracy and old/old fashioned thinking, natural disaster and speed of response, international relationships, and unconventional (by Japan's standards) people and methods in the face of a very unconventional giant monster problem. Set in modern day, btw.

This dude nailed it perfectly. In the US Godzilla is a monster movie, which is fun and entertaining. In Japan, Godzilla is a horror movie, an actual human threat, and this movie nailed it! As a lifelong Godzilla fan, the subtle nods to the 1954 Gojira were wonderful to see, like the reporters on the rooftop. I'd like to think Honda, Tanaka, Tsubaraya and Ifukube would have been very pleased with this film. Especially Honda, who would have empathized with Shikishima. This Godzilla was absolutely terrifying in his purposefully wanton destruction and I definitely wanted him taken down. The music was amazing too!

One of the best I felt was how they held off on playing the original theme. Yes they played with it. Introduced parts and renditions here and there but when it actually dropped it felt earned. They didn't just rush to cash in on nostalgia. By saving for when they did... I honestly got chills.

The strength of Godzilla as a character (and as a monster film genre) is that he can be many different things to many different people. He can be portrayed as a terrifying threat in a grim and serious movie like in "Minus One". A film that serves as a commentary on the threat of nuclear weapons, the failures of government, the need for environmental conservation, etc. In contrast, Godzilla can also be a cheesy and kid-friendly monster-in-a-suit in those Showa-era films. Both approaches can work.

Getting the human side of the story is incredibly difficult even for the Japanese movies, so I was really surprised at how much I liked the cast here, as well as wondering how things will continue for them considering how this movie ends. And seeing as how this movie is doing ridiculously well, I think we might finally get to see a continuing series of movies coming out of Toho again, instead of just being a one-off like Shin Godzilla was. Between this and Godzilla X Kong, it's a pretty good time to be a fan of the big guy.
@ObsessiveGeek
@ObsessiveGeek Жыл бұрын
I have mixed feelings about getting a potential follow-up to this. Personally I tend to agree with one-off statements being more powerful. Even Shin had a possible chance to be made into a continuation. As long as we keep getting films involving Godzilla I don’t feel the need to see a connected series of movies, I feel like studios have gone too hard with everything needing to be part of a universe and forgotten that a movie as a piece of art makes a much lasting impression than something created just to add another chapter.

Having been a Godzilla fan for over 25+ years, seeing every film and watching every show/property featuring him, I love Godzilla in every iteration to one degree or another. The original '54 film still holds up as a powerful film, but its effects are dated obviously. But seeing Minus One in Imax made me think that this must have been what it felt like for the Japanese audiences watching the first Godzilla film 70 years ago. The horror, the destruction, the humanity of their situation all perfectly allegoried by this 100 ft tall monster. Like you said, this was the first Godzilla since Shin Godzilla where I felt truly afraid of the G-Man, and I loved it! So glad this came to the West, so glad it's still being shown in theaters, so glad that Toho is still making Godzilla movies, and I've never been happier to be a Godzilla fan.

I’ve been a Godzilla fan since I was I kid, but the last two have been more than I could have expected. ‘Shin Godzilla’ was the first time I have ever been scared by Godzilla. And ‘Minus One’ is the first time I have ever cried during a Godzilla movie. (I thought it might have been just me, but I heard lots of sniffles in the crowd that night.) An amazing film and proof that a kaiju movie can be an amazing film.

This one hit hard and to me is an instant classic as a long-time Godzilla fan. I always try to think about the original context that Godzila was made, just a few years after the devastation of WWII. The monster was made as a representation of the horrors of the H-Bomb. Like his skin being black and charred to resemble the victims of the blast and his animalistic nature (and size) representing how uncaring and unstoppablely savage its force. And I love that in this movie, they fully lean into that with his breath attack. It's not just a beam in this one, it's basically a mini H-bomb, complete with mushroom cloud, devastating shockwave and dangerous levels of radiation. (And they always give those scenes room to breathe, everything going silent for a moment to highlight the pure horror of the situation) So this movie being focused on the human characters battling against the physical manifestation of the aftermath of these horrors? The main character talking about how his war isn't over?? It was all just a moving love letter to the resilience of the Japanese people and their amazing ability to not only recover after such incredible violence and destruction, but to come together AS A COMMUNITY (there was a very strong message of the government not being of any help in this situation and the people needing to band to together) to take down this "monster." A huge metaphor for how Japan was able to rise from the ashes even stronger. All the characters were basically fighting a giant PTSD monster and it's great. Just, honestly beautiful. And to make the actual story on top of that full of character and heart??? They hit it out of the ballpark imo.

I like Godzilla but I’m not a huge fan. But man, after hearing some of these reviews, I had to go see it. I absolutely love this movie!

Thanks for this! The scene where Shikishima gets rained on with black radioactive oil and his anguish turns to rage actually made me shudder. Swimming Godzilla was horrific, beautiful, and unforgettable. The visceral power of the chemical reaction within Godzilla to spew forth a nuke was absolutely convincing. The score was sparse and minimal until it wasn't, and that was PERFECT. This was 100% Godzilla. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This isn’t just a great Godzilla movie, it’s just a great movie on its own even if the monster wasn’t Godzilla.

People underestimate just how different a narrative and it's characters feel when they are genuinely speaking in their native language wich is something I always appreciate in anime and the reason I always prefer watching anime in sub over dub because alot of the context is more genuine to what the manga writers want us to feel.

I grew up a godzilla fan, I hadn't been to a theater in years (long before the kung-flu) but I've been to see this three times now.

I finally saw this. Holy cow, Andre. I think this is the first modern Godzilla flick truly worthy of Ishiro Honda's original. Like the 1954 one, it's got characters, it's got heart, it makes you care in the face of a Big G who is just a terrifying walking disaster. This really takes the franchise back to its roots in the best way possible.

That movie was amazing, it felt like remake of original film when I watch it. Hell I think it's better then both Shin Godzilla and original film in my opinion. I hope Takashi Yamazaki will make sequel of it because it needs one.

I loved this movie. First time I seen a new Toho Godzilla film in a theater. The human characters were really good. Wish they could've given the big G a teensy bit more screen time, but overall a good film.
