i like that koichi saving himself was a domino effect into making everyone else's lives happier in a way. The mechanic goes through turmoil to find his purpose again His neighbour becomes a mother figure again He inspires his friends from the boat, even the scientist. And Noriko finds her place in the world as well as love in it it may not be but it could be a nice message about anti-suicide and seeing the beautiful impacts you can make

Koichi and the neighbor lady healing their bones as a community was a good microcosm of the country coming back together too. It read touching to see her break and it was because Koichi lived. Going to the war saved Koichi's life, he would have died alongside his family in the firebombing. H8s choices or his failures kept him alive and he loved with shame for it because their government pushed a culture where their lives didn't matter. Now, the whole country chooses life, affirming his will to live and no longer with shame.

@@flip8966 Mothra is one of Toho's most popular monsters and second only to Godzilla in her total number of film appearances. Polls taken during the early 1990s indicated that Mothra was particularly popular among women who were, at the time, the largest demographic among Japan's movie-going audience, a fact that prompted the filming of 1992's Godzilla vs. Mothra, which was the best-attended Toho film since King Kong vs. Godzilla.[6] IGN listed Mothra as #3 on their "Top 10 Japanese Movie Monsters" list,[7] while Complex listed the character as #7 on its "The 15 Most Badass Kaiju Monsters of All Time" list.[8] Though Mothra is generally portrayed as female, male individuals of her species have also been featured in the franchise, including Mothra Leo in the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy, and a male Mothra larva who appears alongside his non-identical twin in Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.

"Not having been to war is something to be proud of." I'm glad you finally saw it, Paul! One of the many things I love about Godzilla Minus One is the juxtapositions between Godzilla and the terrific human cast. Film protagonist Koichi Shikishima wants to give up on life because he doesn't believe he's worthy of it. How this juxtaposes with Godzilla is profound. Godzilla's arrival is heralded by dead deep-sea fish. In Japanese culture, the meaning of Dead Fish stands for giving up on life, not caring anymore about what happens next, and when you have nothing left to lose. Throughout the story, Koichi witnesses the dead fish at key moments of his arc. And though he later deduces their connection to Godzilla, he seems unaware of their eerie connection to the ghosts in his head. This all changes when he chooses life.
@kirara4572

It's true that in Japan, when we see someone who has given up, we say they have "dead fish eyes." Shikishima had dead fish eyes many times, but he overcame them.

@civilizeddiva And they're also abbreviated or just straight up not present in many Japanese films. Man it's almost like ppl don't need to sit through a long and drawn out explanation of a character many are familiar with for the 50th time. A lot of Japanese Godzilla films are just as light hearted, action heavy and ridiculous. Godzilla flying was a Japanese thing. The fucking dropkick was a Japanese thing. Like it or not these interpretations helped Godzilla stay relevant and continue on as a franchise. Godzilla can do MULTIPLE things. If you think the Legendary era is bad/ridiculous I feel the Heisei era would give you an anuerysm.

The scariest thing about this movie is that Noriko survived. And in the hospital room scene, you can see a black birthmark growing on her neck. Noriko must have been fatally injured in the aftermath of Godzilla's atomic breath, but she looks strangely beautiful. Perhaps she got too close to Godzilla and absorbed Godzilla cells, which gave her special healing abilities. The final scene hinted at the hardships that lay ahead for their family.

Something I noticed that I haven't seen anyone else bring up is how, _unnaturally,_ Godzilla moves. Just compare his attack on Ginza to him on Odo Island as Godzillasaurus. Yes, he's big and bulky, but there's clear thought behind his actions; he's observing his surroundings, moving organically, and he only ever attacks when provoked, either by the spotlight or being shot at. Compare that with Ginza. Every step is measured, consistent, and almost robotic; he only stares directly forward and barely moves his upper torso. It places a lot of emphasis on Godzilla's now unnatural nature; he feels less like the intelligent, thinking, feeling animal we saw on Odo Island and more like a mindless engine of destruction.

I'm an OG Godzilla fan and saw it in IMAX two days after release. Paul, this movie is... Truly a masterpiece of the Kaiju genre and a great piece of Japanese cinema, generally speaking. A favourite of mine, for sure. Takashi Yamazaki created something special in "Gojira - 1.0" and he's no longer Japan's best kept cinematic secret. Been following his films since 2002's "Returner". You might wanna check out his WW II titles ."The Eternal Zero": aka: "The Fighter Pilot" --it's about the Kamikazes and "The Great War Of Archimedes". That one's about the building of the battleship Yamato. Again, both are written, directed with VFX designed by Yamazaki. Highly recommended.

@@fmikuru To date, probably the single best movie on the subject of Japan's Kamikaze military strategy and its pilots. Real meat on the bones and lots of food for thought... As well, some of that film's thematic elements recurred in "Gojira - 1.0". Naoki Sato is apparently, Yamazaki's go-to composer. He also did the scores for " "Space Battleship Yamato", his live action "Parasyte" duology and "The Great War Of Archimedes".

Never saw it in a trailer, and I saw 2 different films in the same run that were playing during the same weeks. I slept on it. To find out what the budget is, comparing to Marvel/DC/Disney it is beyond a masterpiece just based on budget alone. In Addition, I thought Godzilla Minus 1 referenced how they just beat him in one battle, but the war is not over AKA Godzilla is down 1. One more thing: I rewatched a few scenes after leaving my previous comment, and what struck me were the little moments and reactions, that feel like they would have been skipped over in other movies. For example, at the end, when the mechanic’s reaction when he hears about Shikishima over the radio. They included the flashback about his final instructions, but they ALSO added his reaction shot. It just shows how carefully woven this tapestry is. And speaking of woven, it struck me how each character had an integral part to play in the outcome. Even “the kid”, who ultimately wrangled the tugboats after being shut out. Take any one of them away, and the plan unravels. Masterful! 👏👏👏🙌

I honestly didn’t like how they showed Godzilla still being alive and regenerating, would’ve rather they just ended the film with the reveal that Kimiko was alive. This is especially true when we see Godzilla at his most ruthless of killing many, including a dog when he’s in the country side that you can hear which was the worst death and made for him getting his shit rocked by the humans that much more satisfying. Despite that though, it was an amazing film that was well worth the purchase.

Even though as a kid I loved hero Godzilla, as an adult I appreciate that they brought it back to its roots of Godzilla being a metaphor for the unstoppable force that America created by developing nuclear weapons, and the destruction they caused with those weapons. That’s also partly why Godzilla always comes back, or is resurrected. Ever since mankind figured out how to make a nuclear bomb there will always be nuclear weapons, there’s no erasing the knowledge and thus no eradicating the potential for mass destruction.

I just finished watching it (finally!), a few minutes ago. I held off on watching your video until after, and I thought your observations were spot on. It’s so well crafted - and I chose that word on purpose, because this movie is so carefully, expertly and lovingly shaped. The scene with G chasing the boat was…🤯😵. And so many aspects of the city attack made you think back to the atomic bombing. The movie is superb!

Shikishima wasn't 'afraid' to live. Or, at least it wasn't only afraid to live, he was feeling guilty for being alive, for having failed as a soldier. You could say he had a case of 'survivor guilt'. Because he failed to do his duty as a Kamikaze soldier and then failed again when facing Baby Godzilla. So after the other survivor handed him their pictures showing their lives he thought he didn't deserve to continue with his, being happy and moving forward because they couldn't either since they all died. When Godzilla shows up again, he is initially in survivor mode, but after the girl goes missing he is driven by revenge by all means necessary. By the movie's end, he finally does his duty as a soldier and gets over his guilt.

Speaking of Japanese Horror, there is one gem that has made it in the top 10 list of most terryfing films of all time. That movie is Audition - an absolute masterpiece, but a warning; not for those weak in stomach.

Ngl, when it was revealed that Tachibana told Shikishima to live, I was very moved. The two twists at the end of the film were great 🎌

That's not Atomic Breath. That's Godzilla's Heat Ray which is more powerful and destructive than Atomic Breath.

Thanks to the positive reception I went and saw Godzilla Minus One before it left theaters. It did not disappoint. Got literal goosebumps from many scenes. His atomic breath was the best iteration we've seen.

Absolutely was my favorite overall film of 2023. It was a feel good story in the end, subverted my expectations but in a good way for once, and of course Godzilla was fantastic. All of this on a manageable budget. Absolutely brilliant

Could also easily be a Black Mirror episode where he did kamikaze and die and this is personal torment. Everything seems to good at the end, ejecting, the girl alive, monster dead, he is the hero...

I just got a chance to watch it since it's on Netflix now. WOW...I've never been a Godzilla fan. I casually know some of the monsters and have watched some of the movies, and I know about his atomic breath. I certainly don't watch breakdowns or reviews for these movies like I would for movies I care more about. But Minus One had me emotionally invested in a way I haven't felt in a while. I teared up multiple times and it's a monster movie...how? Definitely a fan now

There are quite a few interesting questions at the end of the film like why was Noriko running from those people at the start(was she part of an experiment or come across some other substance?) and is the black creeping mark on her neck due to Godzilla's cells reacting with whatever she was maybe experimented on or something?

I watched it yesterday to be honest I don’t see why people say it’s the best Godzilla film out there I mean I liked it Godzilla attacked Japan and stuff but I don’t know I don’t see why everyone hyped about now t saying it’s bad I really did like it it’s just I feel like people overhyped this film I was expecting to see more of the terror of Godzilla and him attacking Tokyo Japan if he is supposed to be the bad guy of the film
