My wife and I went and we had so much fun watching it. It’s the best movie of the year for us. The incredible thing is that you could have taken Godzilla out of it completely and it still would have been a good movie. Loved the ragtag family and band of misfit friends. Hollywood writers should pay attention to how those characters were written.

I saw the movie twice, and I cried at the end both times. My mother saw it during my second visit. She is a huge Godzilla fan. She was very pleased with the film, especially how the theme song was utilized. My only significant complaint was the dinner scene with Kōichi and his shipmates. I know that Japan is a very different culture from the United States, and its customs were different back then than it is today. However, I found it odd that Kōichi would have his shipmates over for dinner without explaining his living situation beforehand. If the topic of family life somehow didn't come up during the crew's many weeks on the job - like how people just chat about what's happening in their lives during long hours - then the subject of Kōichi's "roommates" certainly would have come up. RIght? If Kōichi never talked about his home life while on the job but still felt a friendship worthy of inviting the crew for dinner, then wouldn't Kōichi have explained his "roommates" during the invitation conversation? If the crew members just showed up unexpectedly out of the blue, then I could understand why Kōichi might be thrown for a loop for a minute or two. However, the scene beings with the group in the middle or finishing up their meals, and one of the crew is comfortably playing with Akiko in his lap. The meal experience was probably a good 20 minute experience at least. Yet, Kōichi had not explained who his "roommates" were by then? Was he hoping the subject of marriage and family somehow NOT come up? 🤷‍♂ It is my hope that the dinner scene is actually longer, and the footage that was cut from the theatrical release would have explained the situation better. Oh well. It is still an awesome move.

The way I look at it is Koichi didn't talk about his home life partly because he was very dysfunctional. Part of that is he didn't understand his own home life, which then makes sense that he wouldn't be talking about it, especially if he thinks his co-workers won't understand. It's all wrapped up in his inner mess.

The use of silence in certain scenes helped enhance the whole experience IMO. Thought this was a stroke of genius rather than a weakness.

it's a fantastic film, and I've got a similar background in that I've seen basically every Big G movie from the 20th century. This and Maverick should be a prime examples of how to breathe new humanity into classic nostalgic film concepts that originally owed their fame to spectacle. Tho I also share that weird feeling Thor had where I kinda just don't want them to follow-up on this film and its characters with a sequel....just leave it alone. The regeneration scene right after the conclusion felt like a MCU mid-credits scene that was shoved at the last minute to play BEFORE the credits (undercutting the mood), but otherwise it was a fantastic 3rd act using science & the ocean as a likely homage to the OG film.

Thanks for the review. Sad this is no longer in theaters. One thing that brought to mind was this is a tribute film honoring the 70th anniversary of Godzilla.That has made me rethink some of the stillness of Godzilla ,especially in the final land sense as he marches to Tokyo, and consider “was that done on purpose to honor the original?” It has been stated that is why many of the effect where practical effects and they use of scale models , some time oblivious so other times so well done you couldn’t tell. Food for thought.

Don't know what part of the world you're in but in my area (metro Phoenix, AZ) there are about a dozen theaters that are still showing it as of today. Concerning practical effects, I love that they did that with this movie. I have been wishing movie makers would go back to focusing more on practical effects. One of the reasons for that is because it'll force them to rethink or rewrite movies so they don't rely so heavily on everything being CGI. It seems like movies today are just very lazy stories with huge epic scenes for the sake of just having huge epic scenes. And it's becomes very uninteresting after a while.

This was an awesome Godzilla movie that had moments where it felt very much like it came from the 50s era, but wouldn't have been told then. There was a lot of anti-Japanese government comments and sentiments that wouldn't have been so widely supported then. I was surprised by it when I left the theater. The movie is a great example of how to merge the style of the past, with more modern ideas and not come across preachy or slavish to the past

GMO is an amazing film. One of the best Godzilla films ever. Not my favorite Godzilla film (that still is Godzilla vs King Ghidorah 1991). Best human storyline since Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla. Can't recommend this film enough. Best film of 2023.

This is a great movie, no matter what but I don’t believe it will be as effective if it’s dubbed. I think a lot of the emotions will not be genuine if it’s dubbed. Especially the scenes.Koichi and Noriko

Me and my Grandpa really really enjoyed this movie, in spite of us both see small elements of WW2 propaganda that we weren't too fond of. But ill never forget the moment godzilla is about to fire his atomic breath for the first time and my grandpa says out loud, "OH! Godzilla is America!"

Great movie & review! Hey Thor, have you ever seen the 1979 movie "Captain America" starring Reb Brown in the leading role? That year also saw the release of Moonraker, Superman II and "Star Odyssey," with a man named Dirk Laramie holding a laser sword..

I have not seen the 1979 Captain America... Though Superman II is one of my favorite super hero movies of all time. Mainly because it's the first one I remember watching as a kid. And then I watched it I don't even know how many more times, lol.

I believe Toho's agreement with Legendary is they don't have movies released in the same year as each other. This was supposed to be a two week release, but it performed so well they kept in theaters as long as they were allowed per their agreement with Legendary.

I just got back from seeing this movie; it was truly excellent! I have some issues with the story around the overall geo-political situation but beyond that this is a great movie that just got better until the great climax!

I loved this movie. My favorite of 2023, unexpectedly. Just like Everything Everywhere All At Once surprised me the year before, this movie shot to the top!❤ Like Star Wars (original) it can stand on its own or be expanded on later, it doesn't matter to the enjoyment of it.
