Is Batman Ruining DC on the Screen?

After seeing how much gloom and doom has infested the lineup of DC movies and TV shows, I think it's time to ask an important question: Is there too much Batman?

The DCEU did one Superman solo film and immediately did Batman V Superman when they should have done a Man of Steel 2, Solo Batman film and a Wonder Woman film and then done Batman V Superman. That would have made us get to know the Henry Cavill version of Superman and properly developed him as a character and it would make his death in that film feel earned and not rushed

6:51 Actually, I'm pretty sure the opposite happened. Captain America: Civil War, which was already announced to be an "Avengers" movie, was going to come out on that date. Then BvS was announced to come out at the same time, and Marvel said "Nah we're not changing." Then Guardians of the Galaxy came out and was a big hit then BvS moved its date away. WB claimed that they didn't blink, but...yeah, they blinked.

As a hardcore batman fan, even i agree that not every character in the DC universe should be connected to Batman. The concept of Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Deadshot and Robin getting a solo film before characters like Martian Manhunter or Teen Titans is incredible. DC should be trying to expand their universe with their core comic book characters instead of expanding it from Batman. Though another reason for doing this i believe is because they want to catch up with marvels cinematic universe.

For one it robs Batman of his uniqueness and does the same for other DC heroes. And by that extent ruins what makes Batman appealing while ignoring what makes the rest of DC's heroes appealing. Plus I agree DC should be expanding their universe with the core comic characters instead of Batman. But I have a hunch they don't know what makes any of the other heroes appealing...

He doesn't have super powers, but if it means "superior" hero, then perhaps he would qualify, as he does more than the cops are able to do accomplish in Gotham. Definitely a Vigilante though. I wouldn't call him Vengeance either, as if he embodied that concept, because he does not. Vengeance would equate to the death of the many villains which he grants mercy and grace to, by throwing them in Arkham in hopes that they would be reformed and repentant, though we know a number of them escape to go prowl around only to commit more acts of villainy or even serial killings.

you could also argue Marvel does the the opposite issue. Every hero being jokey and quipy in some form or another. Also thanks to a superhero billionaire. granted the MCU and the marvel comics still tend to keep their heroes varied, and even the justice league had banter, but it could also be argued that if marvel isn't careful they can be just as bad. but i do agree. as much as i love gritty superheroes, and batman, it is kind of tiring. it's part of why im so saddened by the DCU. It would rather replicate the dark knight because that's what the chart says, rather than understand why each hero worked in the first place. why people enjoyed these characters, THAT HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR LITERAL GENERATIONS! Here's my opinion on this. The Dark Knight is one of the best superhero movies ever made. Something that is important to notice about that series is that it had no characters from the rest of the DCU. Why? Because it was supposed to realistic. That's why the joker had scars, instead of being chemically mutated. The idea that this happened in our world. The reason that there were no other characters was that they are all unrealistic. Did you notice that no one had powers in the dark knight? It's because Nolan wanted to show what batman would be like in our world. People, in our world have no powers. That is part of why that movie was so good. In our reality, the things that happened would make for a really gritty movie. That said, the current movie do not happen in our universe. They happen in another universe, like the New 52. In that universe, people have powers. There is no need to go "hyper realistic" by making everything gloomy. If you look at the original tapes of "Man of Steel", the colors are much more vibrant, and the feeling is one of happiness. However, the director desaturated the colors in post production. This makes it feel realistic, even when the situations are unrealistic. The result is confusing. This would be my suggestion to the director of the next movies. For the parts of the movies that focus on batman, make it gloomy and gritty. That's what batman represents. However, for the parts with superman, leave the color in, and make the mood hopeful. Superman is supposed to inspire hope, instead of depression. Batman is supposed to represent the common man getting his hands dirty to do what's necessary. Superman represents the savior who gives hope to humanity.

My biggest worry is that the contrast between Batman and Superman will be insignificant in the new film and the drama in the story will have to come from which one can hit harder. I think the animated Batman and Superman film by Bruce Timm is a great example of how they need to interact. They are so different in tone and style that seeing them come together makes for a 'best of both worlds' feeling. It is a view of the hero with too much power meeting the hero with no power and using their differences to work as a team. Superman is always a happy and fun character in my mind and making him the source of such darkness and violence is what turned me off for Man of Steel. I think we can wait until more trailers come out to discern the visual and tonal difference, but at the moment, things aren't looking good for BvS.

I can't tell you how sick I am of people assigning all the praise and credit for Batman's development and intriguing stories on Frank f**king Miller. NO, people. Miller did NOT reinvent Batman, and he was NOT responsible for the darkening of depth of the character. That work started around 1969/1970, and continued for a long time before Miller even started writing comics. Look up Neil Adams, Dennis O'Neil, Marshall Rogers and especially Steve Englehart. These people deserve far more credit for modern Batman than Miller, he only gets given credit by people who don't know better because The Dark Knight Returns was big and popular, along with Year One being the official canon post-crisis reboot. Side-note: very other Batman story he's ever written besides the two listed above have been absolute unfettered garbage.

I totally agree with you. I think that the new BVS should not be about them fighting and the conflict being about who can beat the other. It should be about the reason that they fight evil. Superman fights evil because of a moral obligation to help those who can't help themselves. Because he is stronger than everyone else, he sees it as his duty to keep them safe. (That's what they did wrong in Man of Steel. They made him someone who fights the bad guy, instead a guardian of truth and justice.) Batman fights evil out of pain. He was hurt by a criminal, and his crusade against crime is amazingly for revenge. His manifesto is that he never wants anyone to be hurt by a criminal again. It's also a revenge scheme. They are so different in this way. Batman doesn't save people, he fights the villain that puts them in danger. He is focused only on the villain, instead of the civilians. Superman is willing to let the villain get away if it means that people will be safe. His main priority is to save as many of the people as possible. The new movie could put them in a "Sadistic Lunatic" position: save the civilians, or fight the villain, and they disagree on what to do. Then have the bulk of the movie about them fighting over what to do. Batman could call superman a weakling, for not fighting, and that's where their conflict comes from. We've seen some pretty awesome batman vs superman fighting without it just being a contest of who hits harder (the dark knight returns was an awesome example of them fighting over a good reason). We need to see both sides of justice- fighting the villain, but also protecting the defenseless.

Honestly there's really no need to make your character that realistic for him to be good, with heroes like Batman having a darker and grittier realistic feel works because it fits the character and his themes but that doesn't mean that Superman has to be dark and edgy as well. Just because something works for one character doesn't mean that it can work for ALL characters. After all isn't the point of a superhero to do things no ordinary man is capable of doing? If every superhero is just the dark knight then it would just be boring and repetitive.

It starts as a crime thriller based off Batman: Year One. But the writers didn’t have much confidence in an origin story where most villains haven’t become villains yet, forcing them to rush most/all of the villains stories to turn them into full-blown threats that are beaten before Bruce even decides to fight crime. This gives the show a cartoonish tonal shift halfway throughout the show, that’s so fast it’ll give you whiplash. (I’m not even gonna talk about Gordon’s wife)

While I agree that Batman is overrated, i disagree that man of steel is "not a superman movie" as it shows what superman would have to go through if he lived in a semi-realistic world. It's good to have some variety from the over-saturation of Marvel movies we have, BvS may be hated by the larger majority of people but it was a breath of fresh air from that overly comedic 'Age of Ultron' in which even the villain was telling jokes. I think that first dc image you showed really sums up how the dc universe should feel. there's so much variety in the hero's and the colours, and while yes they're superheros there's also a bright fun aspect to it. but people say you can't do this with the new dc movie verse but I think tour wrong. I'm not comparing dc to marvel, but marvel films are fucking fun to watch, despite who you like more. I'd say mostly because of the plots and the colours. you don't realise it but a darker costume will likely give you hero a darker demeanor, along with the overly dark plot

Hello everyone, I'm from 8 years in the future, the DCEU is now dead, from an over reliance on batman, and so when it came time to make movies about other characters ( Shazam fury of the gods ) they had no idea how to make it interesting and so nobody cared, also because their movies started having some of the worst CGI in film history ( flashpoint ) and because several of their actors were revealed to be genuinly evil people who basically think theyre untouchable ( amber Heard and Ezra miller ) this universe was a big failure but it did have some bright points ( the suicide squad , the second one ) ( Sasha calle as Supergirl ) ( peacemaker ) ( Shazam ) sadly enough those small victories were not enough to keep this universe alive, hopefully in the future we get a proper DC movie universe that truly respects it's world and characters, personally my choice would be to have The Batman, the recent film be set in a new universe, that way the batman stuff has been done and they can focus on someone else

Batman the animated series and the DCAU as a whole is a treasure that once in a generation show and then Batman vs Superman comes along and the DCEU and that ruins it the DCAU got Batman right DCEU on the other hand Batman is killing where's Batman's moral code that's what makes him human no killing

The video has so many points that I disagree with (still great video nonetheless) 1.) Marvel is trash? hahaha DCU hasn't had a good movie since TDK 2.) Arrow being too dependent on Batman? What? The first season had malcolm Merlin as the main villain and oliver killed. In season 2 he didn't stop killing because DC wanted to follow some Batman formula, oliver stopped killing as a first resort because of his friend's death. 3.) In arrow, Deathstroke and Ras are both batman villains. So what? They both play their parts well and are intertwined to oliver's past. 4.) Gotham having boring story lines and not following the typical batman story. So? First, there's no way Gotham has "boring story lines" for the series to be renewed for a THRID season. Second, why would you want to see an overdone origins plot, why not something new Mendoza??? 5.) Civil War sucks? Sir, you are entitled to your opinion but, it doesn't suck. Funny humor, everyone plays their parts well (Especially Zemo), a plot that makes since (what don't people understand smh), and spiderman baby! 6.) What's the problem with oliver's friends becoming vigilantes? UNLIKE batman (emphasis on unlike), they made the choice to join. I don't remember Dick Grayson having a choice or Damien wayne. Great video but in some things you sound way too arrogant "Remember that Arrow show? yea me neither" Um, it's getting renewed for a sixth season so many bad opinions

Dude, Bruce gave Dick a chance to be trained for only taking down Tony Zucco and then not to fight crime ever again. Later Dick made his own costume and came to Batman's rescue in the said costume. And Damian didn't become a Robin until Bruce went MIA after Final Crisis and Dick made Damian his Robin while he himself took up the mantle of Batman. Also, Deathstroke is Teen Titans villain, not a Batman villain.

I prefer to stick with the dc animated universe I don’t know why but the movies just aren’t grabbing me maybe because they either cancel or reboot potentially good ideas like a Batman beyond movie with Michael Keaton in it I mean if you guys are into these movies good for you but as for me I just don’t care the dc animated universe is basically everything the movies aren’t and I don’t care if that was made 30 years ago with Batman the animated series it still holds up

Don't worry, there's a bright, optimistic and funny one with the Donnerverse Superman Films (All 3 cuts of Superman: The Movie and Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut). By the way, thoughts on the portrayal of Superman in Zack Snyder's Justice League? I personally found him to be very hopeful and very Superman Edit: Oh! If you wanna see Animated Films, then I definitely recommend All-Star Superman, Superman vs The Elite, The Death of Superman, Reign of the Supermen and Superman: Man of Tomorrow

@@thenoirknight5729 the only one that really does it for me is the DCAU superman. I think the snyderverse one falls too hard on the "he is an almighty god and we are his peons whom must worship at his feet" to do it for me. Then in ZSJL superman is far to stoic. In the whole film he doesn't say a single word to any of his team mates, I like a lot of the scenes in that film but superman's scenes aren't one and I am there mostly for flash and cyborg. The donner films are classic but being from the 70s and early 80s their effects are limiting compared to more modern fare... They are really good though. Any animated series before the 90s STAS I haven't seen because they aren't written with much quality and tend to be cheap advertising pulp. The flycher cartoons are great though. After the DCAU superman is mostly relegated to appearances in batman cartoons or justice league stuff and with that I like him in batman brave and the bold, justice league action, the batman and some others. There are also the animated films... I need to watch them...

I can't believe I forgot about the Max Fliesher Superman! *NOOO!* I do hope we get a new live action Superman movie or Superman cartoon soon. So far Superman & Lois is doing very well I feel Again, I highly recommend the Animated Films. Very "Prime Superman" I suppose. I believe they are all on HBO Max too aside from Superman vs The Elite. I believe Justice League: Doom is also a good film with Superman in it

UltraThriller 001 I think the reason it's harder to pinpoint the problem in the MCU is because it's not a character that is shoved into everything, but instead it's a tone. they all feel like the same movie and rarely deviate from the same style of humor and visual color palette.

They are different from each other. The Captain America movies done by the Russo Brothers are political thrillers, Guardians of the Galaxy are wacky space opera, Ant Man is a heist film, and more recently Spider-Man Homecoming is a John Hughes style comedy for examples.

Idk, I'd say he's the leader a good amount of the time. Not that often in the comics. But the Justice League cartoon kinda popularized that idea. With him usually taking charge in missions despite claiming to just be a part-timer.
