I’ll actually counter this a bit. Save EVERYTHING on a flash drive and also upload to cloud. You paid for all the class materials. You may not be legally allowed to distribute, but you’re allowed to have copies. Save all the slides, notes, presentations, handouts, etc onto a flash drive or hard drive. If you forget how to do something, you have the ability to come back to it now, and in the way you remember it instead of having to dive through your old books. This could save you on a take-home style programming interview or the like.

In the case of storage, being luddite is the better option. Because you can forget your password to your Google account, get hacked or even the servers can go down, so, you have to get an external hard drive(actually two external hard drives) and backup all of your data on these so that you can retrieve it. If you bought two or more external drives then leave some of them at the parent's house, creating an offsite backup. Data loss is no joke. Especially if you're a college student. EDIT: Nobody is saying that you can't use Google Drive as a backup solution. Just so you know, you supposed to have at least 2, 3 or more backups. On your laptop, on your phone, on your external drive, CDs and what not because as I said, data loss is no joke. If the file is important and you only have one copy, then it's disposable and no two shits given if I wipe it when I reinstall the OS.

Word of advice, only bring your PC if you know you have discipline. I brought mine and I enjoy it with limits bc I value going out with friends more, but I do have friends who play games non stop with theirs in their room all day. So, it’s a fine balance for each person ultimately

Pro tip, slap a circular sticker on top of your trackpad. The texture is nicer and the motion more natural

One thing to note for Engineering majors: some school 3D printers will only accept models from a thumb drive so recommend having one for that

as someone who brought a laptop to his first semester dorm room. I advise bring a desktop, especially if you are an engineering major, cs, art, graphics design etc. I makes a huge difference in productivity and comfort. if you system is too big try downsizing it. for most people you can get an itx motherboard and the rest of your components will fit into whatever case you choose.

Use online drives only for the courses you are currently taking for the semester (or documents you actively need). For finished courses or uneeded docs leave them in your laptop or start a new drive with a new account. Otherwise you'd need to pay for more storage space. Best to file them under semester+course so you can move the thing easily at the end of a semester

Also I would suggest a trackball mouse in case you don't have a ton of desk space

As a stem major in wildlife bio I didn’t need a graphing calculator for my only math class, I have only completed one year but a basic $10 calculator has gotten me through what I’ve needed so far

I like having google drive as a backup if something happens to my flash drive but that flash drive is definitely my main storage for important stuff because I can acces it pretty much everywhere even if I don't have internet for whatever reason.

I don’t get it why do people hate wired so much, it’s so much cheaper and allows for higher polling rates Not to mention the razer speed flex cable is not bad I don’t feel inconvenienced by it at all

This is why you either major in IT or fall into the homelab rabbit hole like I did and self-host pretty much everything you could possibly need--including the gaming system!!

Thumb drives and portable harddrives come in clutch. Especially with how easily cloud servers can be hacked or idk just shut down because of a "security update"

Flash drives or usbs are more reliable because the provider of the cloud service can essentially delete your data whenever they want, depending on their Terms and Services. The cloud is essentially someone else's computer. And it can also be hacked. Local things are harder to hack

Flash drives personally are the superior storage method, mainly bc I haven’t used drive since school
