Leopard geckos are very common and "easy" pet reptiles, but there are many popular errors people make while caring for these lizards. From metabolic bone disease to stuck shed to calcium sacks to parasites and improper diets and more, these issues tend to go unnoticed but can cause long-term consequences for your little dude. I know, I adopted a leopard gecko from PetSmart 2 years ago because I didn’t know any better. I always noticed that she had this weird walk and didn’t seem to stand up on her front legs. After a while I realized it was MBD, PetSmart hadn’t been giving the geckos calcium. It makes me really sad because I want her to live her best life

I remember taking care of 2 leopard geckos when I was 7 years old or so. They developed and died from severe metabolic bone disease. They were kept in a 10 gallon tank. My dad didn’t do the research and decided it would be fine and we just need heat and food. Partly my fault though. I really feel bad looking back on it because i made them suffer by being super dense and putting too much trust in my dad. Lesson learned: always double check no matter how much you trust someone, and do tons of research

@Xx.Im.just.fckin.peachy.xX. 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah what everyone else said. No child is at fault for something like this. Given the chance and knowledge, I'm sure every child would want the best for their pets, they trust their parents are providing that for them. My dad bought me a rabbit when I was in the 3rd grade, and we didn't even have flip phones at that point in time and Google wasn't really a thing yet either nor did I even know how to use a computer anyways so I literally had no way of knowing the proper care or housing for a rabbit, with that being said, even I knew the tiny little metal cage my dad bought for the rabbit was cruel and not fitting for any creature to live the rest of their lives in, and because I felt bad for the rabbit living in a tiny cage except for a few hours of freedom after school each day, one day on one of his freedom adventures I brought him outside and decided to let him be free forever in the wild...... He was a domesticated all black flop eared rabbit..... Whom I thought would live a better life in the wild..... With the wild rabbits..... On a side note though I did see some odd looking wild rabbits for a few years after that lmao.....

I can't believe I'm being this person, but it's driving me up the wall, even though I love your videos. The word you're looking for is parasitized, not parasitic. To be parasitized is to be infected with parasites, rather than parasitic, which just describes an organism that is a parasite. I've noticed this mix up in multiple videos, and although you'll probably never see this, I just had to say it lol.

I need to check your library but covering obesity in leopard geckos would be cool! Like how to recognize and treat it
@rachelblack2165
@rachelblack2165 4 жыл бұрын
If the gecko is too chonky = feed less. You should have a good idea of what a healthy specimen should look like, so just try to keep it in that balanced range. Specially avoid fatty insects like wax worms in cases of obese reptiles, and try to go for high protein insects like Dubia roaches and superworms. It is a subject that will probably be discussed in care guide videos but too simple to make a whole video out of this subject.
@kotabenjamin453
@kotabenjamin453 4 жыл бұрын
A good sign of an obese leo gecko is if their hind legs are really fatty and "sausage-like." They should be more muscular, not fatty. Then treating would be feeding less. It's an indicator that they are being fed too often and/or too much. Though, taking them out and having the run around on your hands wouldn't be a bad step to take in combating their obesity either. The diet is the main thing in this though.

Oh man, the Leopard Gecko I had, was pretty darn healthy in general, but the stuck shed did occur, we'd have her soak in a plastic box with a thin layer of warm, but not hot water and it helped a lot. She also at one point wouldn't eat anything but the wax worms and it took months to wean her off them onto a more variety of things. XD

These kinds of videos really helped me take better care of my gecko. I got her when I was 7 and she was living in miserable conditions. Sand for substrate, only one hide, no humidity whatsoever, poop was getting cleaned like, twice a month and her only light and heat source was a random lamp from my house. Also, her worms weren't gutloaded and weren't given the right vitamins either.When I turned 12 I started noticing that she is really skinny so I did some research. I was immediately filled with guilt seeing how horrible her living conditions were. I talked to my parents and managed to get her better conditions. A lot more hides and things to keep her entertained, moss for substrate, spraying her enclosure every day, gutloading and putting vitamins on her worms, getting a red heating bulb and cleaning her enclosure every day. Now I'm 13 and will get her a sand mat instead of moss, UVB light and a heat bulb for lighting/heating during the day, different types of feeder insects and bug gel, all of these in 5 days from now! I still feel extremely guilty for neglecting her for so long, but at least she is gonna get better conditions. I'm honestly surprised by the fact that aside from being a bit skinny, she is perfectly healthy. I just wish I did more research when I first got her.

I just tong-fed my leo for the first time the other day! He is 3 but we're 2 and a half months together. A huge step considering he was fed only mealworms, available in a bowl at all times. Hopefully I can give him a more diverse palate!

Great! I'm in the same situation, he finally took bugs from my tongs last night and this morning! Side note: If you need anything I can totally help you by talking with you on Instagram, but if you're not comfortable with that I can link you to a care guide backed by studies and other reputable sources, invite you to a Discord with many experienced reptile keepers called Herphub, etc! A few good resources are the "Leopard Gecko - Advancing Husbandry " Facebook group, the "Bioactive Leopard Gecko" Facebook group, and the "Advancing Herpetological Husbandry" Facebook group as well as the research and writings of Francis Baines and Roman Muryn.

admittedly i got my boy without doing a lot of research, and didn't know what to do or how to help him when i first got him, and a lot of my info was from websites that gave me information i now know to have been wrong or misinforming. i didn't know to monitor his sheds and now he unfortunately doesn't have front toes :( he also had an injured wrist when he was a baby and didn't notice until he had gotten bigger and he was easier to monitor. trying to re-educate myself and make a better life for him, thank you for all the wonderful information!

I know leos are terrestrial but she loves climbing, and if my hair's up she will climb up the side of my face/back of my neck and sit up their and assert her dominance. She's such a weirdo and I love her :)

I was overzealous trying to prevent my leo from getting MBD as a new owner that I overdusted food causing the sacs. They are going down now without dusting over the past week of feedings. Glad to hear it wasn't detrimental.

I rescued one several years ago. She had a good life until she finally had a prolapse I couldn't fix (I fixed her prolapse several times) and ultimately had to make the call to end her suffering last year. I found an incredible and affordable exotic vet near me. I have several reptiles, but never needed a vet until this time. So I am grateful to know if any of my other reptiles need vet care, I have a vet I trust. Anyways, I missed seeing her precious face. I just took in another rescued leopard gecko. The previous owner told me he would come with his 40 gal tank...I was given a leo in a TEN GALLON TANK filled with poop (more poop than substrate😭) with no room for a temperature gradient and the temp from the heat bulb was dangerously high for a leo. Thank goodness I already had the perfect set up for an adult leo. He is eating great (he had only eaten super worms prior to being with me) and very active.💚🦎 He was never handled, so I hold him for a few minutes every night until he squeaks and I put him back in his enclosure... I assume the chirp/squeak sound means "okay, human, I'm done being handled by you, put me back plz"

This makes me really sad. Doing research on how to properly care for the gecko seems like a good class project. Perhaps you could suggest that your sister talk to her teacher about it?
@devilswife7312
@devilswife7312 4 жыл бұрын
Yes you should talk to that teacher or the gecko will die away. For every gecko owned there should always be at least one hide (but I guess you know), and since I have got seven, I need at least seven hides! If they get these animals, they should do research asap and not let it suffer. Please try to stop this suffering!

I'm a teacher, and I'm continually appalled at the lack of research some of my colleagues display when selecting and caring for a class pet. I hate that otherwise caring and educated people can be so DUMB. I did my master's project on animals in the classroom, and found so much horrible care going on out there. Honestly, people, you are supposed to be modeling exemplary care for your students, not perpetuating the cycle of "disposable pets!"

Feel so sorry for Stan. The tank is less than half the size of the legal requirement for beardies in Sweden, and he has no side ventilation. Not even substrate to dig in. I truly hope it is only a temporary home for him.

Stan has MBD, he can’t really move around and the size is so that he can get to where he needs to go. He’s being cared for as much as he needs right now,. I know it looks bad but it’s much better than before because he struggled to get around to his food, hide, and basking spot
