Wow, one of the things I've always been so impressed with in your videos is the chill happy vibe you've had shooting photos of strangers. It seems like anyone who saw you couldn't react any other way but smile. I hope you find all that positive energy again from inside. It's there, but your narrative implied that you are having difficulty feeling it, and that's tough, man!

I think a big difference between then and now is that with the masks, it's difficult to have that non-verbal communication and convey emotion with the subjects through facial expression.

dope mask, dope camera, dope shots, dope music. Couldn't ask for more! Really love the depth and of the one at 5:41. So much going on, but still a very clear point of interest. I never really shot "street" in the capturing people sense, and my photos were always very quiet and without people, since I started, so basically nothing has changed except it's now easier, haha.

Where I am, few people keep their distance. So even if I shoot really up close (which I don't do often) it isn't really a different experience than before. But I wear a FFP3-mask all the time, so I can feel comfortable to shoot even if I'm relatively close to others. What I also noticed: there's a lot less to shoot. Almost 50% of the people that where in this city, where commuting to and from work. With many now working from home and shops etc. closed, there are at least 40 to 60% less people on the streets. I stopped shooting street for about a month and a half during spring last year and again about three months in the fall/winter. I didn't feel the same lack of practice you did, but that may also be because I only shoot one camera and one lens and I do have that combo for about 9 years now. It's good to see you back out there making videos. Stay save and healthy!

I briefly stopped doing street photography when NYC shut down in March of 2020. After a few months I went back to it. What was interesting for me is that people were still (for the most part) open to having their picture taken. In fact, last year was my best in terms of street portraits. This year my biggest challenge (street photography wise) is with using film cameras. Last year I acquired a few--three medium format ones and a Nikon F2 35mm one--and it's been quite the learning experience! Good luck with getting back to the "gym of reality," Eduardo. Maybe we'll see each other out in the streets.

Great video. I've only just started street photography in lockdown so it's hard to say but in the UK in the last three to four weeks things have started to feel normal on the streets again and I'm getting used to the increased pace. But I like it! Glad to see you out and about and taking photos, it just takes time to feel normal again after a break 👍

About 2 or 3 weeks ago I had made 2 photo walks in Hamburg for a project for which I mainly took pictures for the architectures. I was hoping to take some random street photos too, It was difficult not just to get closer to the people, there were also not many people in the city centre at all.

Germans are less cool with being photographed on the street by strangers. The experience of WWII and then Cold War secret police, neighbor informing on neighbor, was deep and intense. It may take some time to ease up as in the US and Japan, etc.

Hey Ed! It's good to see you getting back on track! One minor thing: I found the reflex of your glasses slightly annoying, I don't know if it's due to some new lenses or a different lighting. I like to see people in the eye :)

I was actually doing a ton of street photography during the height of the pandemic in NYC, and from. Personal experience I can definitely say that it's getting so much better and starting to feel a bit more normal now that people are our alor more. In some ways and times there are more people than before depending on where and when you are. And that is also due to covid. But ya it has definitely been a struggle for sure and plenty different than ever before. So much harder to take dynamic shots when there isn't alot going on and everyone is extra sensitive to social distancing. But the best thing for me that came out of it all for me personally is that I got heavily into film photography. Speaking of which, I'm loving these xpan street shots in color. So extra nice compared to any average 35mm camera. I definitely wish I could afford one of those!

Love the episode! I've noticed that for sure, going back out to shoot again is like riding a bike! But a different bike, like going from a road bike to a mountain bike maybe lol but yeah one other thing I've noticed is I now have a more further away natural distance from others whilst a lot of folks on the street don't seem to care, so I find myself distracted by trying to move away from thick crowds now which disturbs the street photography flow. interesting topic to consider!

Here in Sydney Australia it hasn't been such a social catastrophe. However, heading out on the street and getting close to strangers just seems too hard for me right now. There has been a big shift of energy and I feel like the tenuous contract that we enjoyed as Street photographers has been broken. A long road for me too I guess and definitely share your thoughts on longer lenses. Thanks Ed, you rock

So many cool things in this episode. I think these photos will do so well through the years - things like the girl holding the smart phone next to the guys playing chess, the giant ads behind couples in times square, and the guy holding the Amazon box walking the street..these things will all be cool to look back on.

Interesting observations about muscle memory and social memory. With practice of course you will get those back but maybe it's just as interesting to see how your perspective has changed in the meantime. I really like the first couple of portrait type shots after you switch to the longer lens, they communicate a real sense of isolation in the subject, but also in the photographer, especially with that wide empty frame. Beautiful work as always Ed!

Great insights about social memory! Also, despite you not being at your best (still some cool pictures though!), this is in its own way very inspiring & humanizing. Specifically for less experienced (street) photographers, showing that, despite your work usually looking effortless and completely "natural", it actually takes a lot of underlying skill and knowledge that has to be maintained. To make great pictures, we all have to put in the work, even those who have already proven themselves to be excellent photographers. Already looking forward to the next video.

Many thanks for this ride through the streets of NY! I think that photography is like the music you have to practice continuously ... and yes you are right things have changed even my gaze to other people (bodies, faces, eyes, form, colors etc.) is different than before the pandemic. Everything feels somehow off ... I think that a new style of life and art is emerging ... Greetings from Europe ...

I feel the same in the 1st part, the muscle memory ("the rust") and social memory (nervousness of the photographer and the objects) make the process a bit rushed. But as new music begins (with the 3 child pic), you seemed a bit more relaxed, and more importantly you try to think what to record under the pandemic. Though wearing masks (for over a year now) are getting increasingly trying and suffocating for me, at the same time I feel more relaxed and able to immerse in my little mental subjection of the world under the mask (I look better with mask on, yay!!) - perhaps that immersive-ness of objects is one of the reasons why you can resume the usual effort the wait for the moment and compose? And many people would feel more relaxed to be shot, and welcome so much more if a stranger want to brighten their lives with a small humane exchange!

Hermano!

Personally my style of shooting has changed. I no longer go to the gym i mainly just bike so that’s when i shoot. I have been shooting less people and have been focusing more on patterns and landscapes. Overall i’ve found it to be challenging in the good way. I know that once i’m able to shoot people again as i did before i’ll have more skill that i’ll be able to incorporate into that.

I've never liked getting up in people's faces, so to speak, and have never used wide angle lenses for street. Much rather be a step back and take pics, that way. Not that I'm much of a people person to begin with. Though I like street photography, I'd much rather be shooting landscapes and nature than having to deal with obnoxious and threatening people. Too many of them where I live, unfortunately. Especially of a weekend and at night. Which is another genre of photography I like...night photography. Just have to pick my days for when I want to go do some night pics.

For me it is similar than before. As long as you wear your mask it is relatively safe, and also people who hang around are trying to get back to normal life so they are not more stressed becaus of me with my camera. Or at least in small cities in Hungary. However the pandemic and mask wearing and controversies around new regualtions, and how do these affect the interaction with people are new thoughts in the back of my head which I have to deal with while shooting.

If you have the two shots and you are among other people with full vaccines, you can skip the mask. But to walk and stay close to unvaccinated people, you need to wear a mask. It’s also a way to make others feel safe. It’s too intimidating to get close to somebody without a mask. Even if I’m vaccinated, the other person doesn’t know it, and it can easily add a bad vibe to the image.
