Busy flights! And that landing in SD showed why GS requires two pilots probably better than any other video you guys have done so far..lot of direction changes, some traffic, coming down through the cloud layer, and just a lot going on, but glad you made it through that busy schedule and finally headed for home. Hope you all got a few days at least before heading out again ;)

It is definitely a challenging one, and I had to go back and ask my usual co-pilot if we ever did, as they tend to blend after many yrs., but didn't fly much CA, and he doesn't think we did. Could go through old flight reports I have, but have to much to do in the summer lol

Another great job Shaun! I was wondering about something in the video. John mentioned you were heavy and would take forever to slow down. Shortly after ATC gave you a 170 speed and I wondered unless gear and or flaps can come out above 170 how do you slow it down? I am not an experienced pilot so it may be obvious but not to me. Thanks and keep up the great job. P.S. John why don’t you try one Pepsi one Coke socks? Granddaughter says it is the greatest!!
@CorporatePilotLife
@CorporatePilotLife 6 жыл бұрын
We do have a few options for speed reduction. The flight spoilers have no speed limitation, so those are always an option as long as the gear is not extended and full flaps has not been selected. The landing gear creates a great deal of drag, so that is an option as long as we are below 225 knots. With our G-IV, the full flaps selection is available below 180 knots though

Well done and I said it before and i say it again I have no idea how you understand people on the radio, that guy from Bahamas I never understood a single word he spoke. After working in San Diego for several years in the late eighties till early nineties, it's quite depressing to see SAN now. No more General Dynamics or Teledyne/Ryan. Worst yet, the hanger Lindberg's Spirit of St Louis was build in is now torn down. That was real heart breaker and total loss for aviation history. Still hard to believe it's already been over 25 years since I worked there.

Hiya guys, and Francine! Another great video. I understand that you guys aren't allowed to mention who your pax are for privacy/security reasons but, do you always greet your pax before a flight? The reason I ask is last night on FOX news I was watching a segment with Jesse Watters on the contentious commercial seat pitch/smaller washroom debacle and the canned responses from the airlines/FAA. At the end of the segment when Watters was explaining his experience in coach class, he said with much relief that he was flying back on a private jet. I swear in the pic he showed, he was standing next to 'Presidential 69' as the livery(no tail # showing) is unmistakable. Just a thought, Grins!

HAHA! I would love to meet Mr. Watters, but unfortunately that wasn't us. I have seen several other Gulfstreams painted with the same paint scheme as ours, so it must have been one of those. I missed that segment, I'll have to look that one up!

Nice landing at SAN and it was interesting about Bravo 6 vs. 8. When I lived there I used to just hang out and watch the planes land from the perimeter fence. That was pre-9/11. I got my private cert at SDM / Brown Field. I noticed you guys had a flight plan into there recently. I really wanted to see you fly the full approach. I only did it once during my flight training and that was in a C-152. I figured with that fast @$$ jet you drive it would be a lot more interesting to watch. Did you guys get in to there?

Another great video designed to make me intensely jealous. However, I notice that when you start to lower the flaps a light comes on underneath the gear switch - is that a reminder that the gear is still up or does it have some other purpose as I notice that it extinguishes on lowering the gear?

Yep...that's the reminder that the gear isn't down yet. If we go below 1200 feet or select full flaps without the gear, the aural alarm will sound.

Yes sir I found it shortly after posting my question I Googled it and come up with a video from you on it, when you went to the strut and started showing what appeared to be a weight on Wheels switch or squats which is what we called it in the military on fighter jets I put two and two together. I used to be a crew chief mechanic on fighter jets in the Air Force so I know a little bit about weight on Wheels switches and squat switches. Thanks Shaun for the come back.

Is it just the GoPros at night, or are the landing lights in the GLF4 not nearly as effective until you touch the nosewheel down? I've seen a lot of (not quite positive) comments about GoPros at night, so I'm taking it with a grain of salt, but on the few night videos I've seen from you guys the runway seems considerably dark until you get the nose down, and then it's like "now where were all of those lights 30 seconds ago!?"
@CorporatePilotLife
@CorporatePilotLife 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah...it's definitely the Gopro at night. Unfortunately, that is one of the big downfalls of the GoPro line of cameras. The landing lights of our plane have actually been upgraded, so they are very bright.

It's just easier to not move back and forth between the seats.

Hey guys, love the vids. Was turned on to your site by P1D. Question for you, and please pardon my ignorance on this, but why the need for 2 pilots vs single pilot such as with P1D? What makes the work load so much more heavy on the Gulfstream versus the Premiere? Nevertheless, I enjoy your professionalism while having fun and respect with each other. BTW, my in-laws are from San Diego and love it every time I can see the landing at Lindbergh from the cockpit and not a seat in the cabin. Again, great job and please pardon my ignorance. Tim

Hey Tim...big thanks to P1D for the recommendation. He's been a huge influence for us. I've never flown the Premier, so I can't speak for it's flying characteristics, but the G-IV can be quite the handful when things start going wrong with the systems. As long as everything is working properly, one person could fly it. But when things start failing, it definitely takes 2 people to get all the checklists accomplished...especially if the autopilot is part of the failure. Another part of the reason it was certified as requiring 2 pilots is that some of the controls/switches are out of the reach of a single seat. In order for a plane to be certified single pilot, all of the necessary controls must be within reach of the left seat, assuming that's the seat it's to be flown from. I'm sure there are many things beyond that, but I hope that helps.

Helps a lot. I hadn't thought about the reach for a switch, or control, being a factor. Thanks!!!!!

It is always amazing to see the runway next to the interstate, buildings, and homes. Did it ever worry you both when you started flying or is that something you just get used to? Nice video.

You get used to that pretty quick, but the hill of buildings by San Diego makes us pay extra close attention.

Thanks, my son flys a Cessna 172 and we fly in and out of Guntersville, Ala airport and highway 431 seems it is 10 feet above the end of the runway. It's not but I have often wonder why they don't have the runways away from all buildings and highways? It just seems like it would be safer. You both are so professional at your jobs and its nice to see different places you travel to, especially out of the country.

In SD they did remove one runway that ran roughly SW & NE. The airport was there before the highways. Sadly, governments do things for political reasons rather than serving Us, the People. They were trying for quite a while to encroach on the airport enough to get it to move. It didn't work, even after the city council tricked major tenant and my former employer, Jimsair, into demolishing their restaurant & some parking with the promise of allowing them to rebuild bigger. As soon as the restaurant was down, they reneged, leaving Jimsair without much of its income base... right when the Superbowl was about to come to town with all that biz jet parking. The airport stayed, but Jimsair folded. Very sad. When NAS Miramar was about to close, they tried one more time to get the feds to deed it over to the city & move Lindberg there. Instead, Miramar went to the Marines, so... for a while at least, Lindberg Field will stay as it is. FYI Austin, Tx, was more successful at forcing, tricking and bribing Mueller Airport's major tenants to move to the farrrr south Bergstrom. Instead of leaving Mueller as a General Aviation airport, they busted it up & insiders got to build condos etc on the site. I imagine some day, the cycle will return & they'll want to move Bergstrom. Summary: Government is the worst way to do anything.

Wonder what planet that was going into the dark Venus? Can tell that gulfstream loves to stay in the air just above the runway. You guys do a good job of teasing her down

Mars and Venus are very visible in the night sky right now but normally Venus is visible in the west during the time in the earlier part of the evening when the earth blocks the sun's rays or similarly in the early morning in the east. I assume the time lapse segment in this video had the camera pointing generally east with sun setting? I would have thought we were looking at the moon rising out of the east with the gopro's wide angle making it look a little smaller than in reality? Another good video! Keep 'em coming

This Friday, Mars is closer to the Earth then it has been in some 60,000+ yrs. Look to the south just after sunset and brightest at midnight overhead. It won't be as red as normal as severe dust storms are going on there at this time.

What time is NOISE ABATEMENT in effect in San Diego? Reason I ask is you started your take-off roll and had 80 knots before you reached the displaced threshold. If noise abatement was in progress you would have been required to start your take off roll at the displaced threshold. Do I understand that correctly?
@CorporatePilotLife
@CorporatePilotLife 6 жыл бұрын
The noise restrictions are in affect from 11:30 pm to 6:30 am in San Diego. During that time, no departures are allowed at all. Big fines if you do.
