@@coryv5679 Fallout 76 on day one is undeniably a bad game, with glitches of falling through the floor, to too many enemies spawning, the game at its core, to me, is still great. When you actually get to play with friends, you understand why Fallout 76 is an online game, the challenges of trying to go through all the loops to launch the nuke, to shooting down a Scorchbeast Queen is something that only feels good playing with friends. When getting out of the vault for the first time and seeing the mystical West Virginia with light coming in through the trees, and the morning dew covering the ground down the hill, is an irreplaceable experience, to the Cranberry Bog that had been ridden with holes from the remnants of the Great War, the game looks great. The map is most definitely 4 times the size of Fallout 4. However, I will agree that 16 times the detail is a little ridiculous. Fallout 4 had a good lighting engine, but the developers did not use it to its full extent. You can really see the improvement of what you are supposed to feel when you are in a biome. The beginning section feels nice and welcoming, the middle section feels challenging and more against you, and the last part feels depressing and mystical in a sad and weird way. What I’m trying to say is that I think that Fallout 76, though bug-ridden and filled with overpowered weapons, is still a game that I love. I love the community and the welcomingness of high level players to low level players, and I love the increase of stuff to come back to with the Daily Ops, and the game pass to complete. It is a game that I will continue to play, but I understand why you might not like.

@@ColonialBoi I didn't hate Fallout 76 yet it still rubbed me the wrong way overall. I played with a friend like three months after launch till the "end" and little further. I played it again alone a couple of months ago to see how it changed due the added human npcs. As a coop game it rarely gave me the thrill what for example a Left4Dead did. As a singleplayer it felt shallow, grindfesty and uneventful most of the time. So why Fallout 76 is in no way or shape a disaster (anymore), for me there are way better games out there to play with friends or alone.

I hope he means free modding via Nexus and other places, not just stuff on Bethesda.net (although I expect future games to require making an account anyway) or Creation Club. Problem I have is that the Creation Club updates are a royal pain in the butt, always breaking free mods which has led to some modders abandoning their mods. Which I can totally understand. So Creation Club is not modder friendly as far as I'm concerned. And I doubt it will go away. So I'm wary...

I am absolutely impressed with Todd Howard's candor in this interview. From the city sizes in Skyrim, to the problems of Gamebryo/Creation Engine, to the botched launch of Fallout 76, he freely admitted it all and held nothing back, and that regains huge respect from me. I also appreciate the language he used regarding their Creation Engine update for Starfield and TES VI. He used "overhaul," which, if accurate, is a very, very good sign that, finally, they have buckled down and done the hard work they've needed to do for quite a long time now.

He is great when it comes to that. There is an interview from 2008 where he responded to all of Oblivion's criticism and he even said that he "appreciates" the maener comments they got for Fallout 76 because in the end even those are some form of criticism. I think this is a really smart view of handing these kind of things.
@Cairnsification

That doesn't justify the misrepresentations or outright lies Todd Howard's known for. It's easy to look back in hindsight after you've made your money selling your product and say you didn't get everything right. That doesn't mean it's now OK. Todd Howard admitted he *knew* Fallout 76 would be released in a broken state in an IGN interview but went ahead with it anyway. Saying that post-release doesn't now make him innocent; it makes him *more* guilty of scamming players.

@@Cairnsification the problem is, he was definitely forced to do that. No game developer would want to talk about his game like that. The company knows he is charismatic and an icon, so they forced him to it. Yes of course he was a part of it a little, but I wouldn't throw it all on it...

There's a video here on yt where Emil Pagliarulo explains all the thing they had to cut from Skyrim cities because of console limitations. And even on this current gen it wouldn't have been much better, because it would have been limited in scope by the terrible jaguar cpu used in both ps4/pro and xbox1/x. Look at how much cdprojekt red has been struggling to get cp2077 to work properly on this gen consoles, while it could work out of the box on next gen.

Yeah the insidious nature of consoles has hamstrung video game development for a long time. The period in which Skyrim was developed was potentially the worst for this, everyone was eying Wii money, PC piracy was a massive industry buzzword and everything was generally terrible as a result. Look how long we stuck with 32bit architecture. And yeah Todd is generally fairly open to criticism about his games and there is usually a legitimate justification for the criticisms. The main disconnection is that consumers might be absolutely crestfallen by a bad game, but for Todd it's just one job of many, he's not an indie developer with his heart and soul sewn into his projects. What might be the biggest criticism one might have with a Bethesda title was likely just casually discussed in the boardroom at Bethesda. Justifying the flaws doesn't fix the issues, of course. But suggesting Todd is either malevolent or completely blind to flaws in his games is absurd. He simply isn't anywhere near as emotionally invested in the minutia as somebody who has fanatically consumed Bethesda titles for the last two decades.

@@Half-Vampire I think it's more Zenimax forcing them to release it so soon and do such a shitty beta phase rather than Todd and the rest of the time not wanting to do a online Fallout. And due to Microsoft acquisition of Bethesda he seemed more free on what he could say and even he said he would have preferred a 24/7 beta for a longer period rather than the short beta bursts, so it's safe to say that Fallout 76 having a rocky start is all on Zenimax specifically the shareholders that dictate most things but now that Bethesda has Microsoft's funding the shareholders opinions should more or less be irrelevant now so hopefully things become better now.

In conclusion i should say that I hope that TES VI will be as atmospheric and colourful as oblivion and at the same time game it will be for adults (like Witcher 3) Ps Sorry for my English )

First you English is great 👍. But also how to agree Oblivion has this unique charm that I haven’t seen in other games before or even after. It’s very whimsical, a little quirky, zany, unpredictable but optimistic fun. For me I liked Skyrim but Oblivion personality was way more fun and was a game that wanted to be funny. And they easy have the best side quest in all of ES. Plus the music is literally perfect 🥰. It feels peaceful, makes you lost into the music and makes you feel incredible strong (I was so excited when I heard an oblivion song in Skyrim). Plus Oblivion has probably the best dlc ever made in Shivering Isles. The game that fits my personality prefect. 🤩

I don't quite understand the host's point on Fallout 4 about time pressure vs idle exploration. The whole point of an open world RPG is that you play the way that feels the most true for your character. James Batchelor was playing a female character - the mother - and so if he felt that she would do only what was absolutely necessary to finding her child, then the game absolutely facilitates you to follow that agenda. You can entirely ignore Preston Garvey at the museum. You can find the location to Diamond City from Trashcan Carla and bee-line the main quest with great urgency, and then you can return to everything else in good time. There is also the factor of imagination. In one of my playthroughs, I imagined my character emerging into this bleak and blasted wasteland and immediately losing hope that a kidnapped baby could ever survive such a hostile environment. That was a roleplaying decision that facilitated my desire to pursue the periphery experiences of the game without delving too deeply into the main questline.
@pfnieks
@pfnieks 4 жыл бұрын
I agree, even if you feel the urgency to look for your child, you would still find yourself lost in such an unfamiliar and hostile environment. So it wouldn't be weird trying to get a stronger foothold first, rather than rushing to your death. And, as you said, it wouldn't be strange that, once you realize how messed up thus new reality is, you would just give up altogether. Another complaint that I never understood is about starting with a backstory, as if being a soldier or a lawyer had any value in the wasteland (for example, does anybody remember that Rick was a cop after a few seasons of the walking dead? He becomes a completely different person and borderline insane).
@MrGrim-ck7qj

@@pfnieks I especially find it strange when hardcore fans of New Vegas (disclaimer: I thoroughly enjoyed New Vegas, but not to the extent that I feel it necessary to attack other Fallout instalments) use the point that you brought up at the end of your post. Especially seeing as New Vegas is arguably the game that starts the player character with the most developed backstory, even going so far as to dedicate an entire DLC to a backstory that doesn't come from the player's imagination.

@@MrGrim-ck7qj I know, I loved both fnv and fo4 and I can see both their strengths and flaws. That dlc was weird, all of a sudden a backstory was forced on you and you also had to take a questionable decision to move on with the dlc and get blamed for it when you had no choice on the matter. Basically I pretended that Ulysses was a lunatic who mistook me for someone else. Still it was a fun and challenging dlc with lots of awesome loot.

Not everyone wants to have to follow a main questline in order to play a game. In Fallout 4, there are entire areas of the game that are locked off from the player if you go out of your way to avoid the main quest. Heavy-handed tactics such as this have caused me to have no interest in playing the game. I like to make very different characters and live in a World that I can explore and experience from their different points of view. This is not possible for me in a game where I'm being dragged around by the ear from one plot point to another. No, thank you.
@MrGrim-ck7qj
@MrGrim-ck7qj 4 жыл бұрын
@@HareDeLune That's fine, no one is forcing you to play a game you don't want to. Though your response is out of alignment with our discussion in this post. James Batchelor wanted the opposite to you. He wanted to pursue the urgency of the main quest - find his character's son - to the exclusion of all else, and made it sound like the game forbade him from doing so. My point was that this is untrue. You do not need to get side-tracked to pursue the main quest. You can ignore Concord entirely and find alternate ways to Diamond City. I don't think that a character looking for their child and deciding not to get involved in a gunfight is in any way disruptive to immersion. So, I'm not exactly sure what you think you're responding to in this specific comment. That being said, Fallout 4 is an immense game, and I'm not exactly sure what 'entire areas' you think are locked off from the player if you avoid the main quest. Only instanced areas specific to quests come to mind. Are you saying you want access to main quest specific areas but you don't want the main quest content? Seems poorly thought out. The world is wide open and I can walk from Sanctuary Hills to the Glowing Sea and back again without the main quest prohibiting my progress at all. Maybe you should stick to sandbox games like Minecraft if you're opposed to a narrative.

Hopefully not too large. It's always a bit of a bummer for me, when the locations are that gigantic. Very hard to explore everything. I rather have some different medium size locations, than one really big one. In Fallout or Elder Scrolls it also makes sense. In Starfield maybe not so. We'll see.
@leftdoorslord1869
@leftdoorslord1869 4 жыл бұрын
@@chakko007 Yeah the number of cities/settlements shouldn't be sacrificed. But I really want a city as large as Novigrad in TW3. As Todd addressed, it brings fidelity(closer to what lore describes). I also suggest watching Zaric Zhakaron's ideal Elder Scrolls V. I think you will be fascinated by the idea of larger cities.
@tonkinjeezus6626

chakko007 Idk about Starfield since we have zero idea about how the cities, people, aliens will look like, but Elder Scrolls should have excessively large cities to give that epic atmosphere. No one needs to explore everything at once, but as you live, spend time traveling this giant world you’ll learn things, explore things etc, meet new people etc like in real life. MAXIMUM IMMERSION

it's actually nice to hear him acknowledge the disaster of Fallout 76. While i'm still concerned about his words on a previous interview where he said that his biggest regret was not being able to permanently engage and capitalize the success of Skyrim. That they delivered a full game to people, and there is no way to continue capitalizing on it's success. I sure hope these were vain words and Fallout 76 isn't just an experiment to see how people react to the monetizing schemes they came up with in that game, for future implementation. Todd, please go back to the times of Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Skyrim, these are the games that made Bethesda what it is.

I'd assume the reason skyrim was as successful as it was is because they had been riding a high level of success from morrowind and Oblivion and then they took the next title skyrim and made it larger and broader but also made in a lot less in depth and more shallow so any basic player can play it even if they weren't used too rpg systems or building a character with stats and what not, so unfortunately for rpg fans and elder scrolls fans a lot of them felt that skyrim actually wasnt as good as former titles but in terms of a full audience it definitely became more popular

25:45 - Morrowind handled this best out of Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3 or Fallout 4. Because there was not a intro at the beginning making you feel forced in a direction. I prefer no tutorial to speak of with no intro explaining the game, figuring it out is half the fun. I mean sure Morrowind reminds you here and there but you'd hardly notice. If Skyrim dropped you off a carriage releasing you from prison and just let you go without telling you dragons are attacking you must help I can't stand that. At the same time, Elder Scrolls and Fallout are the only games I play because of freedom in the game worlds.

I think he was exactly referring to making deep games more accessible and lowering the barrier to entry, rather than watering down everything and making mobile games for everyone. It's the future in the sense that it will make it a lot more accessible for whole new audiences - not just folks with the time or desire to sit down for hours straight at a single game (which is also my case). One example is my Fallout 4 mod loadout and savegame taking nearly 15 minutes or more to load up. Or even vanilla FO4 taking a long time to load and having to load each cell/map after each transition. Making those stuff faster and more seamless, along with being able to stop and boot up at any point and time quickly, and doing that even on more-mobile platforms (consoles) is pretty darn significant. Of course, this comes more from a marketing and industry (sales, reach) angle than a pure development or game design one. Folks forget Todd has to balance many fronts, and to get him to reply with design or technical views the questions have to be worded in such ways.

He was describing the new games as just arbitrary solutions to questions like "how do we make someone play forever". Games are like art and they need passion and love for the game driving their creation. What game do you get if you are just driven by questions "we need to appeal to the FPS players", "we need to appeal to the MMO players", "we need them to play for more hours, not just 170", "we need to get revenue during all 170 hours they play"
