A F250 gas owner here. It's a 2003 and it gives me no trouble .. surprisingly. It's a full time camper truck. While a diesel would be nice, until I travel a lot more, the cost of a diesel does not make sense. Safe travels.

FYI, Ihave experienced the same problem twice. At first I thought it was because the DEF froze. DEF freezes at 12 degrees and it had been single diget, even minus temps for a week, each time. Maybe there is a relationship but the DEF tank is suppose to have a heating element. Anyway, after the second occurance I took my RAM to the dealer. I was told that my problem was not freezing but low quality DEF. It crystalizes in the line. They told me (under their breath) always use Blue DEF Brand. I have ever since and the warning hasn't come back on. How I ended up clearing the warning both times was driving the truck for 100-125 miles. It seemed to wash the crystals away. Good luck.

Good info. I use the blue Def currently and tank is 3/4 full. It’s been extremely cold in Colorado thou so hoping that helps. Tomorrow I drive it again so fingers crossed we’ll see how it goes. But I’ll be going on a long drive so hope it clears out.
@rustyneal825911 ай бұрын
If I remember correctly, the warning will come back on every 25 miles. Counting down what range you have left until 5 mph limit. If it stops coming on every 25 miles, the line cleared itself and you should be good to go. (The warning may come on every 50 miles. I don't honestly remember. But once you see how often it does, then watch for the warning NOT to appear. When it stops, your line is clear.) Good luck. Love the Colorado winters!

@@rustyneal8259 Drove 450 miles today and never came back so hoping it cleared. I’ll post an update tomorrow. Thinking the cold does make sense it was in below freezing for days before the initial trip

Ironically, I drove from Woodland Park to Aurora today, first time out with my Ram in 2 months. Same exact situation as you. I plan to finish my trip and drive home. I'll bet mine clears like yours. Good luck. Please share if warnings stopped.

FYI, this is more for those that read or watch your channel than it is for you. My identical error message cleared on my drive home today, approximately 94 miles. If you or I ever have the DEF warning pop up again...keep driving at 65+ mph for a good long way. That seems to clear the warning. Good luck in your travels. 😊

I don't have diesel, but I hear that you'll probably need your Phd to understand DEF expiration dates. Sounds like a fun trip. As for the Toyota, Joni Mitchell said it best "you don't what you've got till it's gone" safe travels.

I started looking for a truck the same time you did. I wound up getting a Toyota Tacoma. My needs aren’t the same as yours, but my mechanic told me between the Colorado the canyon and the Tacoma the latter is the best choice because of its reliability. Good luck

I hope you figure out the DEF system on the Ram. It’s the part giving you issues not the rest of it. The Cummins engine is rated for one million miles as long as you do the maintenance. I would try one of the diesel Ram forums before you give up on it. You’ll never get a Toyota with a drivetrain that is that heavy duty. Maybe get a Ram dealership to sponsor you? A place that loves trucks. 😬

If you know any RAM dealerships looking to partner, let me know! It's a great idea, I'll keep that in mind as I talk to some in the future.

Only problem is Toyota does not make anything HD. Wish they did. Modern campers are so heavy like the Lance 1172 the diesel becomes questionable. The purchase price, price of DEF and repair costs when needed.
@SlowGoose16 күн бұрын
The problem isn't ram vs toyota. Its gas vs diesel and the emissions systems the govt implements on diesels. Im a dealership diesel mechanic and 90% of the issues on new machines are def system problems.
@Captndarty11 ай бұрын
Modern diesels and cold temperatures are terribly unreliable. I just got back from a 2000 mile road trip with a gas truck and saw four HD trucks on the side of the interstate with trailers behind them.

Gassers are simpler, more reliable, and very refined these days. If you get a Tundra, double-check the GVWR.
@TailsofWanderlust9 ай бұрын
That's the only reason I haven't gone back to a Tundra. With such low GVWR, I can't have the larger truck campers.
@meatrobot9 ай бұрын
Correct. Tundras are rated pretty high for a half ton, but still only a half ton. I own a Chevy 2500HD 6.0 gas,, but I only pull a trailer. I think you should look into a GM one-ton, maybe even a dually with the new 6.6 L8T.
