I’ve been looking for videos like these for a while and I’m glad I found this series. This is totally something I’d like to do and I really love your videos, keep at it! I definitely didn’t just binge watch this whole series this weekend 👀 😉

Good job, and I see you have learned a lot from this experience. I was fortunate in having calm conditions when I did it and found it to be lot easier than many hikes I have done in the Adirondacks and Whites. It’s weird how altitude can impact people differently, and it’s not about fitness level.

Glad to see you are still at it! Enjoyed the cool, new transitions on your video. It’s about time for me to start MY summer 2020 Highpointing adventures too. I’ll be doing Elbert this year along with 16 others, if all goes according to plan. Hopefully I don’t have the same experience you had on Elbert. Take care! When/what is the next video? 🙂

Thanks, I appreciate it! Best of luck with the highpointing! That's an ambitious goal. For us, we aren't exactly sure yet. Illinois is the last easy state we need to do, and then probably AZ and NM are on the horizon.

Keep it up Garrett! You are doing great man! Elbert was a crazy mountain for sure but a great 14’er nonetheless. In a couple weeks we are heading out to Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho to do 43-47 and finish on either Wyoming or Montana in preparation to finish the 48 on Hood next May.

Kudos to you guys. Hiked a 14er near there-Mt Sherman I know how hard this is. From Florida I know also now that you need to stay at 8 for a few days then can go up to 10 then 14. 10 was too high for me after a few days. Feel like our lungs are not adjusted to the lower o2 levels for sometime.
@grtshw
@grtshw 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I agree completely. Can't possibly overstate the amount of time your lungs need to get adjusted to the lower oxygen levels. One day, or even two days, at 10 is just not enough if you're headed to 14 and a half

(Watches till the end) DAYUM. At least you weren't caught in a full-blown thunderstorm, like my parents and I were when we tried to hike Mt. Baldy near Los Angeles. Then again, I don't think I've ever experienced full-blown altitude sickness like that. I think I've hiked above 10,000 feet in the Sierra Nevada, but not on such a strenuous trail (although my brother actually got pretty bad altitude sickness on that trail).
@grtshw
@grtshw 4 жыл бұрын
Wow! Hopefully we don't ever have to deal with a full on thunderstorm. But yeah, the altitude sickness was a tough thing to deal with. The strangest thing for me was just that I had no altitude problems doing Kilimanjaro, which is like 19,000+ ft, but this one kicked my ass. It's just a question of physical preparedness, I guess.

@@grtshw Before Elbert, when was the last time you went hiking at a high altitude? If it was Kilamanjaro a year ago, you might have lost your "resistance" to high altitude in that length of time.

I’m after the high points as well. I’ve kinda of started more on the difficult side. If you need beta on some of the harder peaks out west let me know. I’ve Hood, Granite, and Borah! Best of luck, stay safe, and have fun!

Hey Garrett, welcome back to Highpointing. I recently went out to another highpoint. This latest one was Iowa's and I managed to get Alabama's literally the DAY before everything started shutting down. I'm looking to go on a peakbagging trip up in the northeast going through NY and every state up from it minus Maine. Hopefully, everything opens up in time for me to do that. Edit: Did you crossover/use the Continental Divide NST for this hike? Edit 2: I saw that Charles Mound will be open this year for the summer months again. Good luck if you decide to try to get that one.

Sweet! Good luck on the northeast, that's a really fun trip. Honestly, I'm not sure if this crossed over the continental divide. I didn't see any signage about that or read anything about it, but it's possible. The trail we used is the most popular one, the North Mt Elbert Trail.

HUZZAH! A NEW HIGHPOINT! How strict were the regulations for Elbert?
@grtshw
@grtshw 4 жыл бұрын
Not very! It's not in a national park or anything so there is basically nothing in the way of just driving right up to the trailhead and getting started. I can't imagine that's the case for many of these hikes though, I know national parks are only partially open.

PS: Leadville is America's highest incorporated city (its nickname is the Two Mile High City). Did you drive or fly to CO? It might be a while before my parents and I get on a plane again.
@grtshw
@grtshw 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, we needed to be in Arizona for something that was unrelated and unavoidable, so we flew there, but drove to Colorado. It was all a little nerve wracking but it worked out fine. The airlines have relatively good social distancing measures in place.

I did notice as you were climbing that the video seemed more...abstract than usual. Is your dad okay? I have friends who moved to Denver and they talked about how the altitude messes with you, so I can only imagine what it would be like twice as high up.
@grtshw
@grtshw 4 жыл бұрын
Yeahhhhh, my eye for useful camera angles definitely let me down towards the top as part of a much larger issue, haha. But yeah, my dad is alright. We both struggled with altitude while we were up there and he specifically felt a little sick when we first got down, but no real issues after about an hour of rest in the hotel room.
