Coast line from South shields down to redcar is probably the worst coastline in the uk. Fact. You wouldn't even let your dog in the sea for fear it will die of pollution. The Northumberland coast is lovely for all of about 3 days a year when the sun comes out. Otherwise it doesn't really matter how nice the beach is when it's lashing down,freezing and blowing sand in your face. The weather in Newcastle is just awful, probably the worst in the country. Never get a full blue sky day ever in Newcastle. Height of summer in July and you are lucky if it gets to 20 degrees. It's been 12-15degrees for most of July so far. The women all think that fake tans look good because they get no sun. They all spend fortunes on sunbeds and fake tan so they can look like geordie carrots. Most the women are massively overweight in Newcastle aswell. Most geordies just live off greggs and Lager. The diet is shocking. The education is awful up north, the hospitals are full of africans, northumbrian police are an absolute disgrace, the councils are even worse. The one thing that makes Newcastle look OK is that all its surrounding areas are horrendous. Gateshead, Sunderland, Stanley, Chester le Street, teeside and County Durham villages. Some of the worst places to live in the UK.

I live in Heaton, which is just on the other side of Shields Rd to Byker. I know Shields Rd very well. It’s not at all dangerous, but it is run down. You may have seen the big white fronted building with shutters on the front. When I was a kid in the 80s, that was Parishes Department Store. Further down the street where the British Heart Foundation Furniture shop is now was another Department store called Beavans. They used to be thriving and it was a street full of greengrocers, Butchers, Electrical Shops, Hardware shops, Banks. It’s in a sorry state to how it once was. As for the Byker Wall, I’ve never had or seen any bother when I’ve been through there, but I can’t comment from what it’s like as a resident. As for Wallsend, again it’s a bit run down in parts but again I’m often in Wallsend and it’s fine. You pronounce Segedunum ‘Seg eh do num’. You shouldn’t think of Hadrian’s Wall in terms of modern day England and Scotland. It’s course is entirely in England and whilst in the West it’s only a few miles from the border, at Newcastle and Wallsend, it’s 60 odd miles south of the border. In Roman times the area was inhabited by the Brigantes and the Votadini tribes who both lived on either side of the wall. Post Roman times it was the Kingdom of Bernicia which stretched from the Forth (beside Edinburgh) to down to the Tees. Bernicia then merged with Deira (comprising mainly of modern day Yorkshire) to form the Kingdom of Northumbria. Whilst the Picts were up in Northern Scotland. So the entire notion of Hadrians Wall being a border with Scotland or built to keep the Scots out is entirely incorrect.
@GoingGlobull9 ай бұрын
Cheers. The point about the wall was more about keeping the savages out, the Scottish bit was a bit of a joke. I’m planning on going up to Bamburgh castle in a few weeks to talk about the wall the 4 kingdoms the ‘Scottish’ tribes before heading north of the border

Excellent video, nice to see someone be so complimentary on the city. Like all places, we have our issues but there is a sense of pride in where we live that seems to be lacking elsewhere. Byker/Wallsend/Walker are deprived places in the East End that brings common problems with it, but majority of the people are salt of the earth and hard working. Areas in the West End like Arthur’s Hill and Elswick are equally as deprived but there are signs of regeneration, the city as a whole has gone through several cycles of change and I feel like we’re currently in another one given the poor economic climate, times are hard but the city and it’s people always survive and thrive. Keep up the good work with the videos, cheers.

Sheilds road is a shit hole but definitely not the worst in the country. As other commentators have said theres worse places in the city than byker and we dont have any of the issues that citys down south have like the gangs and knife crime. But it is getting worse. Going east to west, wallsend, walker, byker, benwell, elswick and scotswood were all heavy industy with ship building all along the river and the munitions factories in scotswood. When the factories closed there was high levels of deprivation that a lot of the communities never recovered from. Wallsend and walker werent bulldozed to the level the other areas were with a lot of the west end terraces replaced by blocks of flats and byker being replaced by the byker wall. There was a plan to build a massive motorway behind the wall soone side just has a few windows dotted about as the wall was planned to shield the community from the noise and dirt from the motorway. But it was never built and as you pointed out the estate is like a maze. The problem came that if you knew the maze you were fine but if you didnt people could vanish so it was a hotbed for crime. The city is pretty clean and tidy and as much as we have rough areas like byker you can walk around pretty much anywhere and not get bothered. Oh and segedunum is pronounced seg-a-doon-um Great video though looking forward to part 2

A bit of interesting information to add to this enjoyable video. Directly across from the church you passed in Wallsend is where Sting was brought up. His home was above the Chinese takeaway. Peace.

There are some nice suburbs in Brum, you must have missed them. The Times said Moseley was the best suburb to live anywhere in the country a couple of years ago and Stirchley the best place to live in the Midlands the other week. I love Brum to be honest and have never felt unsafe anywhere and I'm in my 60's. The Canal system around Gas Street and Brindley place is impressive, should go back and check them.out.
@GoingGlobull9 ай бұрын
Yeah I’m going to go back in the summer, I was focusing on the bad side of things for the theme of the video. Having said that driving around the city it was tough to feel positive about the place when so much of it is in such a state. Shame, because almost everyone I met was friendly.

@@GoingGlobull Start out around the Cathedral and Walk down Colmore Row to Victoria sq and through Chamberlain sq, up through Centenary sq and past the library. Walk through the convention centre and cross the canal to Briindley place. Come back on yourself to the canal and Gas Street basin and through the Mailbox and back to New Street Ststion. You won't see hardly any litter or Graffiti and would have walked a fair distance and taken in some impressive architecture. I think you owe Brum this! Also visit Bournville and the village Green and some of the cafe's there etc.
@GoingGlobull9 ай бұрын
Nice one, thanks. The Brum video was a learning experience for me. I wasn’t expecting to see half of the things I do or have the conversations I had off camera about the problems there. That no doubt influenced my feeling and how I made the video. That said, what I showed is at least some of the reality of the city which shouldn’t be hidden.

Newcastle has many facets. Like anywhere you'll find bad with the good. I remember when Byker still had the remnants of terraced houses, and evidence of bombing from WWII.

With all the lovely architecture, I was wondering how badly hit Newcastle was during the war, it looks like it escaped the worst of it?
@WomanNextDoor9 ай бұрын
@@mickymouze1224 with Byker being close to the River Tyne it got bombed in '41 I believe. Bombers used the river as a guide because there was a munitions factory (Vickers) on the banks of the Tyne towards the West end of the city.

@@mickymouze1224 and yes it was bombed from July '40 to Dec '41 by the Luftwaffer but thankfully many historical buildings survived. Around 400 lost their lives sadly.

You have a very strange perception of what nice is lol To be fair I’m from County Durham and as far as cities go Newcastle doesn’t seem bad. Some great buildings. And it seems quite safe. Byker/Shield’s Road was alright when I was there 01/02. Never had any problems there, you only have problems if you create problems in my experience. The decline of Shield’s Road has nowt to do with the folk that live there, that’s all down to greedy landlords, central & local Government neglecting their duty & not investing our taxes where’s socially & economically needed.

@GoingGlobull it's a 2.5 mile tunnel built in 1800s to transport coal underground from the North of the town to the Riverside and onto the colliers, it then becomes an air raid shelter and the area you were in, Byker, relied heavily on the tunnel for protection from bombing raids. I'm a tour guide there and would be happy to give you a look around for one of your videos. Do you have an email address I can contact you on?
